WandaVision's first three episodes hooked me with old sitcom vibes and a growing mystery
I wasn't sure about the Marvel sitcom setup at first, but the I Love Lucy feel, the move into color and the clues of a trapped Wanda left me wanting answers
I went into the first three episodes of WandaVision unsure what Marvel was doing with a black and white sitcom. By the end of the third, I was hooked. I'm obsessed with old shows like I Love Lucy, so once I decided to go with it, that vibe won me over, and the mystery under it has me desperate for more.
The first episode's I Love Lucy feel turned my doubts around
At first the setup struck me as strange. I was thinking Marvel, and asking why we were doing this. Then I decided to go with it, and I'm glad I did. The intro gave me Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes, and the anniversary mix up and the dinner with Vision's boss felt like an I Love Lucy moment. I also loved Agnes, and I liked her line about her mother-in-law being in town. That would have been me with my ex.
The dinner turned when Mr. Hart started choking. Wanda's "Vision, help him" was the only part of that episode where she broke out of character and felt more true to who she is. Then the ending pulled back to a screen, and "it's almost like they're being controlled or something by someone."
The second episode brought in color and a sense that they're trying to get out
The second episode reminded me of another witch movie where she does magic with her nose. I loved all the new neighborhood characters, and the talent show magic act was funny. I would laugh if I saw that card trick in real life.
The color creeping in is a cool touch. It reminded me of an old film where kids go through a TV and it shifts from black and white into color, though I can't remember its name. After the beekeeper appeared, I felt clearly they're in an imaginary world, they're trying to get out, and her memories are coming back. I'll miss the black and white, because I feel you use more of your imagination that way, and it would have been cool to keep it a bit longer.
The third episode's pregnancy and Geraldine's exit left me needing answers
Then Wanda is pregnant, and fast. This one moved into a Brady Bunch era, and the colored episode felt insane to me, especially how quickly the pregnancy happened. The glitches made it feel like one big puzzle, and when Wanda's twin came up and Geraldine got kicked out, I was even more sure they knew they were trapped in some world.
I think this is clever. Skipping through eras keeps you from settling into a comfortable zone. It forces you to move and grow, and even the filming and dialogue change along the way. The show is "keeping me very hungry" for more episodes, and I want to figure out all of it before more of the truth comes into play.
One episode at a time isn't enough for me. It's getting better and better as it goes, and I don't want it to stop.
