Why Beerus vs Jiren isn't even close in Dragon Ball
Jiren outclasses his own universe's God of Destruction and matched Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku, but Beerus remains a class above
Beerus and Jiren are two of the mightiest warriors in Dragon Ball, and Jiren is considered more powerful than his own universe's God of Destruction. That still isn't enough. When I break the matchup down, there's no way Jiren is more powerful than Beerus. Beerus is a class above, and this fight isn't close.
Here's what each of them brings, and why Jiren's strongest arguments fall apart once you look at who Beerus really is.
Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7
Beerus is the God of Destruction in Universe 7, the universe that is home to all of our main heroes. His primary responsibility is keeping that universe in order. He's the brother of Champa and the student of Whis. He's one of the most powerful warriors in all of Dragon Ball history, and he constantly pushes Goku and Vegeta to try to reach his level.
He can destroy planets like they're nothing, and he loves food. He'll save a world if it has delicious treats, or destroy it if he doesn't like its food. Beerus is a force to be reckoned with.
His raw power is on another level. He can send Goku flying with a flick. He can overpower and hold back Vegeta, and he beat Vegeta with a flick of his wrist while using only one tenth of his power. He can easily defeat Buu and Gohan.
Beerus vs Goku and Champa threatened the universe
Then there was his big fight against Goku. It was said that Beerus and Goku repeatedly hitting each other sent out shock waves powerful enough to threaten to destroy the universe. The same thing was probably going to happen in his fight against his brother Champa.
Gods of Destruction are never supposed to fight each other, because they're so powerful that a fight between them would mean the destruction of multiple universes.
Then there's Beerus's ki. He can blow up a planet with no effort whatsoever. He can destroy a planet with a sneeze. He has even destroyed the sun and stars, and his blast with Champa would have threatened to destroy the whole universe. He can also shoot out blasts that could have killed several gods. Overall, Beerus is one of the most powerful and versatile characters in Dragon Ball history. He's well above the likes of Goku, Vegeta and Frieza, and is even arguably above other Gods of Destruction.
Jiren in the Tournament of Power
Jiren is the most powerful member of the Pride Troopers and easily one of the strongest beings in the entire Multiverse, even considered more powerful than his universe's God of Destruction. He's an honorable fighter who believes in strength and justice. He doesn't like fighting as a team, usually fighting enemies by himself and usually winning.
During the Tournament of Power, Jiren was able to casually knock away multiple fighters at the same time, and that was a regular thing for him. He overpowered nearly everyone else in the tournament. He easily busted through plenty of barriers built by Android 17. He could break out of Hit's Time Cage, which means he transcended time with his fist. He blocked countless punches from Super Saiyan God Goku with a single finger.
All of that came before Jiren broke his limits and reached his full power, a form in which he's stronger than most of the Gods of Destruction. In that form, he was able to match Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku. When Whis says you're more powerful than a God of Destruction, and fighters like Frieza say they want to avoid fighting you, you know you're strong.
Jiren is probably one of the ultimate tanks in Dragon Ball
Jiren is also very tough. In fact, he's probably one of the ultimate tanks in Dragon Ball. All through the Tournament of Power, he was casually brushing off attacks, and those attacks came from some of the strongest warriors across the Multiverse.
He completely shrugged off multiple blows from Super Saiyan Goku, and he did this repeatedly throughout the tournament. He took attacks from Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta without being affected, and attacks from Hit without being affected. He takes energy blasts just as easily: he took a Final Flash from Vegeta and acted like he didn't even feel it.
Even when Goku reached Mastered Ultra Instinct, Jiren was definitely able to feel those attacks, but he still managed to take them again and again and keep fighting back. His durability is off the charts.
How fast is Jiren compared to the speed of light
Jiren is also very fast. Quantifying speed with Dragon Ball characters can be tricky, and that's putting it lightly. But it's fairly definitive by now that characters like Goku and Jiren can move much faster than the speed of light in a fight.
Take one of the Pride Troopers working under Jiren. He was stated to be faster than the speed of light in his base state. Even so, he was completely blitzed by an unmastered Ultra Instinct Goku. Jiren wasn't. While that Pride Trooper was only beginning to register Goku's attacks, Jiren had already dodged them. As Goku grew more powerful and faster with Ultra Instinct during the fight, Jiren was still able to outspeed him.
That changed when Goku mastered Ultra Instinct and began to blitz Jiren. That pushed Jiren to break his limits and trade blows with Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku, a character capable of blitzing a character faster than a character who can blitz a faster than light character. "That's a lot of faster than light." It isn't completely quantifiable, but it shows Jiren is far beyond the speed of light in combat.
Jiren's ki and the World of Void
Like most Dragon Ball characters, Jiren is known for his ki. It's been said that he surpasses most Gods of Destruction in power, and Gods of Destruction can threaten to destroy entire universes. Whis even says Jiren's potential is immeasurable. And all of that talk of being more powerful than gods came before Jiren broke his limits and unlocked his hidden power.
To get something more definitive: Dragon Ball characters have regularly destroyed planets and moons, even when they were much weaker. Moving upward, Super Saiyan God Goku sent out one Kamehameha that blasted through dozens, maybe even hundreds, of Beerus's little spheres, each of which was implied to be able to casually destroy planets. Goku was far more powerful during the tournament and his fight with Jiren, so it's safe to say Jiren is leagues beyond that too.
Jiren and Goku were able to shake the whole infinite World of Void with their presence alone, without powering up or attacking, and they got significantly more powerful than that during the fight. I'm not going to argue that Jiren has the power to destroy the universe outright, but I will say it looks like his energy operates close to that realm, which is impressive.
Why Jiren's case against Beerus falls short
It's an easy breakdown. There are a few things you can argue for Jiren: that he's more powerful than a God of Destruction, and that he fought Ultra Instinct Goku. Neither is enough to say he can beat Beerus.
For starters, Jiren is more powerful than his own God of Destruction, Belmod, not all Gods of Destruction. Belmod is definitely weaker than Beerus, considering he's only been a God of Destruction for a little over 200,000 years, while Beerus has been one for 73 million. Beerus also fought one versus 11 against other Gods of Destruction using Ultra Instinct and held his own, ending up one of the last ones standing in that free for all even though everyone was targeting him the most. "He's not your average God of destruction."
Jiren's fight with Goku doesn't mean much here either. Beerus has seen Goku master Ultra Instinct and grow more powerful since the Tournament of Power and his fight with Jiren, and Beerus still considers himself more powerful. He isn't too bothered by Goku or Vegeta, even as they keep getting stronger.
Beerus wins, and it isn't close
It's also been said that someone like Frieza could train for the rest of his life and still wouldn't surpass Beerus. And when Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku fought Moro, Goku was more powerful than when he fought Jiren. Even then, Beerus was 100 percent sure he could kill Moro with no problem.
"There's really nothing here for Jiren." Beerus is unquestionably more powerful and undoubtedly in a different league, and he would come out on top nearly every single time. Beerus wins.
