Avengers: Doomsday World Series spot appears to match a leaked Fantastic Four baseball scene
A special look aired during the World Series adds a few new shots, including the Fantastic Four at a ballgame, but little else
What was billed as a special look at Avengers: Doomsday during the World Series turned out to be a handful of new shots from the film intercut with baseball players. I find this cheesy. I don't like when they do this, and I especially don't like when they call it a special look at Doomsday. It did include some new material, though, and the Fantastic Four at a baseball game seems to confirm a whole scene from the plot leak.
The spot plays on the idea that ceremonial first pitches are getting bigger and bigger, with Reed Richards taking the mound. Mixed in are brief moments with the Avengers, including Thor and Mjolnir, and the line: "You have lived stolen lives, but now you must give them back."
The Fantastic Four baseball game is rumored to be one of the film's first scenes
A spoiler warning applies from here, because this comes from the plot leaks. The Fantastic Four at a baseball game is rumored to be one of the very first scenes of the film. Apparently, it will be most of the team without Sue, who is home with Franklin Richards, as seen in the post-credits scene from the first Fantastic Four film. Something happens at the game in terms of a calamity, and that's reportedly what Reed is looking up at at the end of the spot.
When a fence falls, the Fantastic Four are said to spring into action to help everybody. Apparently Steve Rogers and his son will be there too, and they'll help out, maybe displaying a little too much strength. The Thing reportedly notices, but before he can investigate, the team gets an alert from the Baxter Building. They rush back to find Doctor Doom with Sue and Franklin in their living room, about to tell them about the impending incursions.
This was one of the original scenes in the very first plot leak, and an industry insider talked about details for it almost a year and a half ago.
The leaked scene recasts Doctor Doom as a visitor from the 828, not a kidnapper
If this scene plays out as described, it confirms that Victor Von Doom is from the 828. What we saw in the post-credits scene wasn't Doom kidnapping Franklin Richards at all. He already has a relationship with Sue and Reed, and he's there to tell them something is wrong: an incursion is about to happen.
He then explains incursions to Reed, Sue and the rest of the Fantastic Four. That explanation is meant for us, the audience, although we've already heard one Reed Richards in Multiverse of Madness tell us all about incursions and their dangers. Doom is said to need Reed's help to find whatever is causing this one. When they search for anomalies, the three they reportedly find are Steve, Peggy and their son Jim.
That ties directly into the end of Avengers: Endgame. I'm not even sure you can call what we saw a post-credits sequence, since it's more of a continuation of that scene. Loki shows up and tells them this branch reality is going to be pruned, but that he knows a place where they can live with their family in peace. He takes them to the 828. When Doom and Reed track down the anomalies and find it's Steve and his family, they tell him what's going on. Steve is compelled to help, which is why he'll be with them when they travel to the 616.
Steve's Mjolnir moment and Ant-Man's Cap joke point to a team already united against Doom
That leads into the moments we're now seeing between Steve and Thor. When Steve grabs Mjolnir, he asks, "This doesn't bother you, does it?" and Thor tells him, "You know it does."
One step past that, there's the Cap joke, where Ant-Man refers to the old Captain America, Steve Rogers's cap, which is now Sam Wilson's. It's a fun little joke but not revealing, other than showing that everybody has teamed up and knows Doom is the enemy by the time they get the pep talk from Thor.
That does call the timeline of Avengers: Doomsday into question a bit. We know they'll be fighting against him, at least with the Sentinels in the 10005, which is rumored to be the first big action sequence of the film. Only certain heroes will travel there. Others will stay in the 616, and some will travel over to the 828. We'll also see X-Men members in the Baxter Building, so there will be a lot of travel between the three universes. The rumor is we'll see up to six universes in this film, but the main ones will be the 616, the 10005 and the 828.
Marvel Studios has now built up Doomsday promotion and delivered little twice
Pulling back from the lack of content here, I feel this is the second time Marvel has done this, alongside when they announced something was coming and it turned out to be a Loki variant themed coffee shop. Twice now they've built something up for Avengers: Doomsday and had us believing it was a trailer of some sort, only to bait and switch. I know Marvel Studios is going to milk their promotion for as much as possible, and they don't want to give too much away.
It seems like they're intent on showing us only small continuations, small frames of scenes we've already seen, and those scenes are rumored to come primarily from the first and second acts. According to the same insider, it's reported that we haven't seen a single frame from the major third act battle. That's something they didn't feel they needed to hide for Avengers: Endgame. Some of its first trailers included clips from the end battle, even if the CGI changed major details like Cap's shield being broken.
Now we're getting yet another promo that didn't show us much of anything, except confirming there will be some Fantastic Four material at a baseball game. If it's in line with the plot leak, and there's no reason it shouldn't be, it will be very early in Act One.
Marvel Studios is playing this curiously. When you start breaking records for presales and track 50 million almost a year before the film comes out, and it's now reportedly upwards of 100 million in presale tickets, they aren't worried about ticket sales. Hopefully they won't feel the normal pressure we've seen them buckle to, where they show too much of the film at the last minute. It seems like they're doing the very opposite with the bulk of this promotion. We're less than two months from the film, we don't have the final trailer yet, and this was billed as a special look that gave us very little to go on. I was a little disappointed.
