Avengers Endgame Encore Trailer Expected Before End of August, Insider Says
A trusted Marvel scooper said the first trailer for the Endgame re-release was set to land before the end of August, and I think the whole campaign is really about setting up Avengers Doomsday.
The first trailer for Avengers Endgame Encore is reportedly landing before the end of August, and I think you cannot talk about that marketing plan without talking about Avengers Doomsday, because this whole re-release is really a play for that next movie.
A trusted insider says the Endgame Encore trailer drops before September
This update comes from an insider going by Cryptic HD Quality, who you can find on Twitter at Cryptic4KQual. He has been active in the Marvel scoop space since right around the time the Infinity Saga ended and the multiverse saga began, and in some cases he was able to post brand new Marvel footage even before official promos went out. He is now saying that before the end of this month, meaning August, we are getting the first Avengers Endgame Encore trailer.
I want to keep the usual caveat attached to that: no scooper gets everything right, but he has established enough of a track record that I am treating this as a real update rather than idle chatter.
Timing matters here too. Marvel already showed a trailer at the previous San Diego Comic-Con, and D23, which is a huge presentation for Marvel and really all of Disney, is coming up in just over a week in Anaheim. There is a chance they show that same footage again there before eventually dropping it publicly, but I have a sneaking suspicion we might actually get a separate trailer release rather than just a public drop of the one already shown at Comic-Con.
The real reason Endgame is being marketed this way is Avengers Doomsday
Yes, these re-releases will bump the Endgame box office a little, and I do not think this will be the last time it hits theaters in our lifetime. But the bigger point is that Marvel is including brand new footage in Endgame Encore that they are calling a bridge to Doomsday.
They clearly want to rekindle some of the hype we had for Endgame in theaters and hope that carries over into hype for Doomsday. On top of that, this feels like one last opportunity to add new footage showing that Doomsday is truly an extension of where Endgame left off, picking up right where that story ended.
There is also a chance this is meant to help people forget a bit about some of the missteps in the multiverse saga, including Kang originally being the big bad of that saga, if they can show us how Doctor Doom actually tied into everything we loved at the end of the Infinity Saga.
Will the new trailer actually tease Doomsday footage? I do not think so
The obvious question is whether they would dare tease any of that new Doomsday footage inside the Endgame Encore trailer itself. My take is that they probably will not, mainly because there is not going to be a lot of brand new footage tacked onto the end of Endgame in the first place.
I am holding out faith that they do not intrinsically mess with the original cut. What they are adding is deleted scenes from the original Endgame shoot, not new material filmed for Doomsday and retroactively wedged in. Marvel has a lot of respect for their own material, and there have been way too many cautionary examples, like the de-specialized versions of Star Wars, for me to think they would want to mess with this canonically.
All in all I expect the added footage to run under ten minutes, maybe even five to seven, just a couple of quick scenes bridging into Doomsday. I do think we will see marketing text promoting exclusive Doomsday footage plastered between scenes, but I am not convinced that means actual new Doomsday footage makes it into the trailer, since that footage is exactly what they want people buying tickets to see in theaters. That said, I might be wrong, and if they do drop some shots of Doom in this trailer, I would be totally surprised, and maybe that surprise is the whole selling point.
My best guess: a separate Doomsday trailer, not new footage inside the Encore trailer
If that logic holds, and it disappoints you that the Endgame Encore trailer itself will not include new Doomsday footage, I do not think you should be too discouraged. More likely than not, we will get an entirely new Avengers Doomsday trailer attached to play in front of Endgame in theaters.
By the time Endgame Encore actually hits theaters, the Doomsday trailer that is out right now will be old hat, so the timing on rolling out a fresh one alongside the re-release would be perfect.
My honest take on the Endgame Encore money angle
I want to be clear that the Endgame Encore re-release itself does not bother me, and doing it leading up to Doomsday does not bother me either. But here is the real truth: a lot of us watching have seen Endgame maybe a hundred, if not a thousand times on Disney Plus over the last half decade, on top of everything we already watched in theaters.
Asking us to spend money on tickets just to get what is probably five to ten minutes of new Doomsday footage, when that footage alone is likely enough to get people spending money they normally would not, feels a little thin to me. I do not love being the guy who complains, since that is not usually what I do here, and I know it can sound exhausting to complain about a company as big as Disney and Marvel and how they run their business.
Here is the counterargument I keep coming back to though: if there were no additional Doomsday footage at all, and this was simply a re-release meant to drive nostalgia and hype ahead of Doomsday, it would probably hit theaters closer to Doomsday itself, and the numbers would be far lower, because we can already watch Endgame on Disney Plus or piece together most of it on YouTube.
Addressing the money grab criticism, and the box office stat problem
Some of you have been calling this a money grab, or Marvel Studios double dipping by pushing up the Endgame box office and getting people to pay full ticket price for a movie they already have access to on their Disney Plus subscription, all for five or ten new minutes of footage. I hear that, and I really do see it both ways.
But Marvel Studios wants to remind us how much we loved that Doomsday footage, and given how much money they have already spent producing movies like Endgame and Infinity War, you cannot expect them not to want to double dip and bring some of that back around. Even if it only draws a couple more tickets to Doomsday, that is the ultimate plan.
On top of that, if this pads Endgame's all time box office stats in the process, I honestly do not think that should be allowed, since we are talking about a movie's original theatrical run and nobody makes that distinction anymore. As I said above, I doubt this will be the last time Endgame ends up back in theaters in our lifetime.
Are you hyped for this trailer, and does the idea of paying for a ticket just for a few minutes of new Doomsday footage feel like a fair trade to you, or a bit of a money grab?
