Is Frieza a Secret Genius? The Mystery of the Dragon Ball Villain's Body and Mind
Frieza claims he never trained, yet he built forms to suppress his own power and unlocked golden transformations on his own. To me, that has always seemed a tiny bit nonsensical.
Frieza has been my favorite Dragon Ball villain for as long as I've been a fan, and one of the most enjoyable characters in the series to watch. I've wondered about him for years, and not only about his backstory. My question is about his body and his mind: has Frieza been a secret genius this whole time, has he known far more about himself than he was willing to admit, and does he know how to tap into an even greater power?
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F brought Frieza back into prominence with a new golden form. In some ways it also deepened the mystery around his strange physiology.
We still know almost nothing about Frieza's race
I've pondered the mysteries of Frieza's race since Dragon Ball Z. Even now, we don't know the official name of the race. In the games, they're referred to as Frieza's clan or Frieza's race. Plenty of fan made names and translation names float around, such as ice demons or frost demons, but those are incorrect. Officially, they're simply known as Frieza's clan.
That leaves basic questions unanswered. Where are these people? What planet are they from? How old is King Cold's lineage? We know more about the Saiyans because Toriyama has often opened up about their history, but we know virtually nothing about Frieza's race.
Frieza's golden forms show he's a fighting prodigy
What we do know, going back to Dragon Ball Z, is that Frieza is a fighting prodigy. It was hinted at back then without being stated outright. That idea was elaborated on much more in Dragon Ball Super, and before that in Resurrection F, when Frieza came back to life after being dead for over a decade.
He went from a power level lower than Super Saiyan 1 to astronomical heights with his Golden Frieza form. At that point he could compete toe to toe with Super Saiyan Blue and was even slightly stronger. He still lost the fight, because his body wasn't accustomed to the new form. But the fact that Frieza elevated his power so drastically and leapfrogged over every previous villain is something that needs to be respected.
Later in Dragon Ball Super, when Frieza returned for the Tournament of Power, he had once again gained an incredible amount of power through mental training while he was in Hell. He unleashed what is known as True Golden Frieza and showed he could evolve even that late in the game.
Frieza's suppression forms suggest he understood his own anatomy
You could argue Frieza can't be a genius. Yes, he unlocked new powers, but he never seemed to understand his own body. In his original Dragon Ball Z fight with Goku, he didn't know how to sense energy. He had all that power and very little fighting experience, and Frieza himself stated that he never trained. That has always seemed a bit nonsensical to me.
Some things about his anatomy don't make much sense to me. In the original manga and in Dragon Ball Z, we learned that Frieza's final form is his true form, and that the earlier forms were ones he created to suppress his power. I think that's a cool idea, but it could be considered contradictory. If Frieza created forms to suppress his power, he had to know his own body and how powerful he really was.
Obviously, he was able to figure all this out with scouter technology, probably with somebody helping him when he was younger. Even so, being able to suppress his power means he had to know something about his own anatomy. And if he knew his anatomy, he should have known how to become stronger and how to train.
So how did Frieza come up with these forms without some form of training? Did he just do it one day, shift his body and trigger a metamorphosis out of the blue? If he could, how could you not consider him a genius for having that kind of knowledge? It's almost as if Frieza has a lot of knowledge and wisdom about his own body, while in actual combat he's still in many ways just a prodigy. He didn't know how to sense power, and he knew nothing about mental training until he applied it in the modern era of Dragon Ball and multiplied his power tenfold.
The idea that Frieza never trained is hard to believe
The meta reason for Frieza's power boost was Toriyama being a lazy writer and coming up with something out of the blue. Still, I've always found it hard to believe Frieza never trained, because he knew so many techniques. He had mastered telekinesis, he could manipulate energy like the best of them, and he obviously had a strong body.
Granted, maybe he never trained, or never did any serious training. Does that mean he was born with these abilities? If so, was King Cold born with this power too? We know King Cold knew about Majin Buu and Beerus. With that much knowledge, why didn't King Cold tap into a golden form or figure out higher levels of power so he could fight off Trunks back in Dragon Ball Z?
It's obvious to me that Toriyama uses the fighting prodigy idea to elevate characters' power and scale them with whatever is happening in the series at the time. He did it with the Universe 6 Saiyans, and with Frieza. Frieza even refers to himself as a prodigy. But how would he know he was a prodigy without any training? Scouters could have told him he was strong, but how could he know he could raise his power by training, as he said in Resurrection F? The whole thing is lazy writing, but I still wonder whether there's a real explanation.
Frieza's race and home planet are still a mystery
I've wanted Toriyama and the staff at Shueisha to elaborate on Frieza and his race. We don't know if they have a planet or where it is. We don't know if they're all prodigies or if it's just Frieza, and we don't know if there are other members of his family.
We know about Cooler, who was a Takao Koyama creation for the movies and not really a Toriyama idea. We know about some characters exclusive to Dragon Ball Heroes. There's Kuriza, a Toriyama concept, and later Frost was introduced. Some fan Dragon Ball mangas have explored these ideas, but nothing has come from Toriyama himself.
The big mystery is how Frieza uses ki. Is his race inherently able, from birth, to control ki and use telekinetic powers? If so, would that qualify him as a secret genius, or is his race simply gifted from birth? And if it's the latter, where is King Cold's secret power?
Frieza may have more potential than the Saiyans
If Frieza can raise his ki so rapidly in Hell and unlock new forms and abilities so fast, could he be the character with more potential than the Saiyans, maybe even more than Broly, if he puts his mind to it? What would happen if he took a page from Goku and Vegeta's playbook and trained with Beerus and Whis, as they had been doing for the previous couple of arcs? What sort of astronomical power could he unlock?
Frieza worked out the mind training that took him to True Golden Frieza without any formal training and without anybody telling him anything. To me, that says Frieza is a secret genius, and he has the potential to be a real problem in the future should the writers take it in that direction.
