Avengers: Secret Wars Filming Could Slip to 2027, New Report Claims
Marvel Studios is reportedly weighing another shooting delay for Secret Wars, though nothing appears decided and the report says nothing about moving the release date.
Avengers: Doomsday isn't going anywhere. It's still coming out as planned. The movie that may be slipping is Avengers: Secret Wars, where a new report claims production might be pushed to 2027, which could push the film itself into 2028.
We don't have much to go on yet, and it doesn't sound like anything has been decided. I also want to be clear about what the report does and doesn't say. It talks about the shoot date, not the release date.
Marvel Studios is reportedly thinking about delaying Secret Wars filming again
The story comes from Mark Cassidy, who writes that a new report claims Marvel Studios may be considering pushing filming on Avengers: Secret Wars back to later in the year. According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is thinking of delaying shooting for Secret Wars once more.
The last we heard, Secret Wars wasn't scheduled to begin or recommence filming until November. The word recommence matters there, because there have been reports that cameras are already rolling. Now it seems production may have been pushed back yet again. It doesn't sound like anything has been decided, but the report suggests it could be 2027 before production gets up and running.
The Russo brothers say they've begun soft prepping Secret Wars
During a recent interview with AP News, the Russo brothers revealed they've begun soft prepping. Joe Russo described what it's like to take on two of these films at once. "When you're doing one of these movies, this is hardest thing you've ever done," he said. "When you're doing two of them, it's almost inconceivable." He added that this is the second time around that they're doing two back to back.
For context on the timeline, Doomsday filmed from April until September of 2025, with reshoots only just wrapping up. That movie is set to hit theaters in December. Assuming Secret Wars follows a similar shooting schedule and doesn't start until November, the report argues it would be well into 2028 before the film is released.
Secret Wars may move faster than Doomsday did
That seems like a herculean task, especially given the scale of Secret Wars. But the report also points out that, despite what Joe Russo said, there's a chance the Russos have already been working on the movie and may have already filmed some scenes.
The report adds that work is likely to go a little faster on Secret Wars, since the Russo brothers and their cast and crew are still in the zone from shooting Doomsday. With many of the sets already built, they shouldn't need to spend as much time on preproduction.
Roxy thinks a Secret Wars delay wouldn't be surprising
Roxy came at this from the production side, noting that the whole of Reject Studio lost electricity for an entire day. Nothing messes up a dozen people's work schedules more than not being able to shoot for a day, she said. She mentioned that there have been a lot of fires in LA and started to suggest the power grid might be connected before moving on. A crew member being out sick had already thrown things off, and she said she doesn't know how you avoid delays without having people work triples.
With that in mind, Roxy said she thinks Secret Wars getting delayed would not be a surprising thing. Every time someone references Secret Wars arriving in 2027, she thinks to herself that it's fast and wonders how they're going to get there that quickly. She thinks the two films are being shot back to back, which would make sense of having the sets and locations ready for both and being able to move quicker. Still, she doesn't mind this. To her it doesn't feel like a sign that we'll never see the movie, just that they need more time, with a lot of moving parts and a lot of moving people.
I think Disney will probably push hard, but a later release isn't a nail in the coffin
I agree with Roxy. If they need to push things back, okay. But again, the report doesn't say the release date is moving. It's about shooting. They'll probably have to move things together, because I think Disney is probably going to push them pretty hard.
What I think they have to be careful about is this. If Disney is saying it needs the movie out in December of 2027, even if they're not ready and they're rushing, they've got to be able to move it to April or so of the following year. Pushing it all the way to December 2028 doesn't mean it's a nail in the coffin by any means, though.
The other side of that came up in the discussion too. If Doomsday is really good, people will probably be pretty excited. If people aren't liking Doomsday, the longer the wait, the worse it gets.
Mike Kalinowski says whatever it takes to make a great movie
Mike Kalinowski's take was simple. If it does delay it, oh well. "Whatever it takes to make a great movie, that's my two cents," he said.
