X-Men: First Class wins over Sam in her first X-Men movie
After Logan, Deadpool and the MCU, Sam finally steps into the X-Men films, and the plan is to finish them all before Doomsday
Sam has now seen her first X-Men movie, X-Men: First Class, and her verdict came quickly: "That was great." She loved it. For me it's a solid film, and it's the starting point for a full run through the X-Men movies that we plan to finish before she sees Doomsday.
Sam stayed locked in through all of First Class
Sam told me she was "locked in from the minute it started until the end." She added, "I didn't get a chance to be bored," and said the film was very well done. I pointed out that this one gave her the history of Charles. When she saw Logan, she never understood why he was in the wheelchair or what the school was about. Now, she said, it makes sense to her.
The road to X-Men ran through Logan, Deadpool and the MCU
Sam hadn't seen many comic book movies before we started doing reactions together. When I asked if she wanted to try it, we didn't know how long it would last. We thought maybe she'd join me once or twice, every so often. The first thing we ever did together was Logan. She got interested, saw Deadpool, and then we went through the whole MCU.
While we were on Deadpool, about two years ago, I asked her if she had ever seen an X-Men movie. She said never, and I told her we'd get to them eventually. Her response to finally getting there: "This eventually is amazing."
Why the rewatch starts with First Class instead of the first release
I did this the way I did Star Wars with her, so First Class isn't the first X-Men movie released. Part of the reason is that new X-Men movies are coming with the MCU. When the first X-Men movie came out, Wolverine was in it, and those films relied on him for a while. First Class doesn't rely on him, and Sam still loves the X-Men. Sam said she's dying to see how Wolverine gets involved, since the only time she saw him here was his brief moment at the bar.
Another reason is Brand New Day, which Sam has seen. I want to get her familiar with this side of things before we go further. I think I know where I'm going next, but I have to double check.
The plan is to finish every X-Men movie before Doomsday
These movies are all relevant heading into Doomsday. We'll look at the Doomsday trailer again, and we'll go back to Logan and the Deadpool movies, because there's a lot of X-Men material mentioned in them. Sam pointed out that Deadpool also has many MCU references.
We haven't had a series for her since Star Wars, where there was only one movie she didn't dig, and even that one she found okay. Without saying which, some of the X-Men films are great and a couple are not, though she might like them. We'll finish all the X-Men movies by the time she sees Doomsday, for sure.
