Why the Whale in Whale Fall Had to Be a Sperm Whale
The film's choice of whale comes down to which species could actually hold a human in its stomach.
In the movie Whale Fall, it is actually 100% true that a sperm whale could swallow a human, and it's actually the only whale that could do this.
During the movie, all I could think about was whether this could actually happen in real life, and it turns out that it actually could.
A major scientific detail that had to be in the film was that the whale had to be a sperm whale rather than a blue whale, a humpback whale or an orca. While doing research for the movie and talking with biology consultants, the team realized that the sperm whale is the only whale with a stomach that could actually hold a human.
