Avengers: Doomsday clip: did Ant-Man mean Steve or Sam?
A final Dune trailer, a short Avengers clip, a new Jumanji look and a Netflix Cinderella retelling, with Patrick Stewart's passing hanging over Doomsday
Four new looks landed in our 13th React-A-Thon: the final trailer for Dune: Part Three, a 30-second clip from Avengers: Doomsday, a new trailer for Jumanji: Open World, and a trailer for Steps, an animated fairy tale retelling from Netflix. Our closing feeling was that Dune and Avengers are likely to be the marquee films people see when they arrive at the end of this year.
The Doomsday clip carried extra weight going in. With Patrick Stewart's passing, the hope voiced was that this final performance as Professor Xavier gets the perfect sendoff, and that any of his scenes are going to hit differently. Even his monologue about death from the last trailer has been shared all over social media, and the response to that was simply: too soon.
Dune: Part Three's final trailer shows a more ruthless Paul and a 19-year jump
The trailer opens intensely and reveals that 19 years have passed. Paul looks more ruthless, and the expectation is that we see him turn into a villain. One moment suggests a betrayal, which drew the comment that he betrayed her first. He also looks thinner and more gaunt than before. "It is a space epic," and it's a theatrical experience worth having again.
There was also a special global fan event for the trailer, with Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet doing a Q&A hosted by Brittany Broski, theaters around the world joining in, and an extended scene that made the chairs vibrate. With more than 20 books in the series, if I'm not mistaken, there's no shortage of material for more stories, and a limited TV series set in that world, which we didn't get a chance to see, is one we maybe will watch.
The Avengers: Doomsday clip raises a question about which Captain America Ant-Man meant
The clip shows three teams, Mystique, and a "right, Cap" moment. It also shows something being handed to Steve Rogers, with Thor reacting and the remark that it bothers him because Steve is worthy. The debate was whether Ant-Man was addressing Steve Rogers or Sam, the current Captain America. The guess was Sam, since both Steve and the Thunderbolts member responded. There was also a theory that Steve, Sam and the Thunderbolts member could not all share a team because of their military backgrounds and the question of who holds the chain of command.
Jumanji: Open World pulls Spencer's mom into a game that has spilled into the world
Open World feels like a fitting title for a video game movie, with characters moving in and out of the game and new people becoming playable characters. Spencer's mom gets pulled in, and everyone appears to be down to one life. "Jack Black's going to always have the most fun," and one scene raised the question of how much was improvised. There was a wonder whether The Rock wanted the chance to play something absurd, like the mom.
The cast of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan work well together, and as long as the films make money and keep delivering fun scripts, more could follow. The first one initially prompted the thought that it wasn't needed, until it turned out to be a lot of fun. The lingering frustration is that an earlier trailer spoiled the cake joke.
Steps tells Cinderella from the stepsisters' side after the wand is stolen
Cinderella is not the villain here. A stolen wand breaks the story, and the prince must put the slipper on before midnight or face becoming a frog forever. One running figure had a T1000 look. "It's a really fresh take on Cinderella," like an alternate reality branching from the original. The open questions are how the stepsisters' relationship with Cinderella will work and why everyone seems to know her. Its original song is another draw.
Of the four, Dune and Avengers look set to be the big ones.

More on Avengers: Doomsday →My theory was that Sadie Sink's secret Brand New Day role was Mayday Parker, daughter of Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker, and that this connected Brand New Day to Doomsday, where Maguire's Peter would die, and then to Secret Wars, where Mayday would appear to redeem him.
Mayday Parker theory: how Tobey Maguire and Sadie Sink connect →
I believe Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars cannot fail because the Russos only returned once their story idea clicked, putting storytelling above fan service, and Feige let them rebuild from scratch. I hope I'm right.
I believe Marvel's Kang-focused projects (Loki, Quantumania, even Deadpool & Wolverine) were secretly building toward Doctor Doom all along, gathering the multiverse's power into Loki so Doom can seize it and become God Emperor Doom. I think this was probably the plan from the start, regardless of what happened with Jonathan Majors.
I believe Avengers: Doomsday ends with Doctor Doom unmasking to reveal Tony Stark's face, stunning the heroes as credits roll, based on Campea's 50/50 variant stance staying unchanged and his hint that Doom's face stays hidden until that climactic moment.
