Star Wars Might Be Quietly Testing a Real Darth Jar Jar Storyline
Lego Star Wars and Fortnite have already given the fan meme a red lightsaber and Sith eyes, and I think that changes the conversation.
Darth Jar Jar becoming canon still sounds absolutely insane, and in a normal world I would not be making a case for it. But after watching a video from Star Wars Comics that came up in my comments, I went back through everything Disney has done with Jar Jar recently, and I have to admit something. What if this actually makes sense?
I want to be clear up front. I do not believe George Lucas secretly filmed Jar Jar as the true Sith Lord of the prequels and then replaced him with Count Dooku because everyone hated the character. There is no real evidence that happened. The question is much narrower than that old theory. Did Lucasfilm take the basic idea of Darth Jar Jar, soften it so it would not destroy the prequels, and introduce some version of him into canon? That is becoming a harder question to laugh off.
Lego Star Wars and Fortnite Already Gave Darth Jar Jar a Red Lightsaber
Darth Jar Jar is not just a fan made picture hiding in some dark corner of Reddit anymore. Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy officially gave him a red lightsaber, the Sith eyes, and dark robes, and brought Ahmed Best back to voice him. Then Fortnite did the same thing, and the official Star Wars channel literally promoted Darth Jar Jar entering Fortnite. They did not call him Dark Side Jar Jar and wink at the camera. They called him Darth Jar Jar.
So no, he is not canon. I want to make that very clear before going further. But Lego Star Wars and Fortnite did not suddenly rewrite The Phantom Menace either. What they did do is show that Disney knows exactly how much attention this version of the character creates. They tested him, they marketed him, and people like him. That is where things get interesting.
Disney Is Not Calling Him Canon, But They Are Clearly Testing the Reaction
If Lucasfilm wanted to bring Darth Jar Jar into the main universe, I do not think they would use the World Between Worlds to reveal he had secretly been a Sith Lord the entire time. That would be the loudest option in the room, and I also think it would be the worst one. The World Between Worlds is not supposed to be a reset button for Star Wars.
Ezra could not simply walk through a doorway and save everyone he had lost. When he considered trying to save Kanan, Ahsoka explained that doing so would remove the sacrifice and potentially kill everyone he saved. You can interact with events there, but Star Wars has treated those interactions more like parts of history that already happened, so it is not a machine Disney can use whenever it wants to change its own movie.
Making Jar Jar Palpatine's Secret Partner Would Undercut the Real Tragedy
If Ahsoka walked through a portal and discovered Jar Jar whispering Sith secrets to Palpatine behind the scenes, it would not technically change what we saw in the prequels, but it would completely change what those movies meant. Suddenly Palpatine was not the mastermind manipulating Jar Jar. Jar Jar was helping manipulate the entire Republic. Every clumsy fall becomes an act, every stupid line becomes part of his disguise.
It would be hilarious for about five minutes, and then you would realize Lucasfilm just turned one of the most important political tragedies in Star Wars into a thirty year setup for a meme. I do not want that. Jar Jar's role in Palpatine's rise already matters as it stands. He proposes giving emergency powers to the Chancellor, which allows Palpatine to use the clone army and accelerate his takeover of the Republic. He does not need to be a Sith for that moment to be devastating.
I think the entire point is that Palpatine exploits a fundamentally decent person who is frightened, inexperienced, and desperate to help. Jar Jar thinks he is protecting Padme and the Republic. Instead he opens the door wide for its demise. Making him Palpatine's secret partner could actually make that scene less interesting, not more.
The Version That Could Actually Work: A Broken, Guilt-Ridden Jar Jar Falling Later
Here is where I think Darth Jar Jar could work. Do not reveal that Jar Jar was always evil. Have him become something darker because of what happened afterward. He helped hand Palpatine the power that created the Empire. Padme dies, the Jedi are nearly wiped out, and Naboo eventually learns what he had done. Existing canon material already paints his later life as tragic, showing him as a street performer entertaining children while the adults refuse to forgive him. That is not the ending of a comedy character. That is the beginning of somebody carrying an unbelievable amount of guilt.
Now imagine Jar Jar realizing that Palpatine used him. He spends years being mocked, hated, and blamed for the fall of the Republic while the man who manipulated him becomes the Emperor. That would break somebody. So maybe Jar Jar was always slightly Force sensitive, not secretly more powerful than Yoda or Palpatine's hidden master, just somebody with an unusual connection to the Force he never understood. That would explain some of his ridiculous luck without requiring us to pretend every pratfall in The Phantom Menace was a calculated Sith maneuver.
Then after the Empire rises, something discovers that darkness inside him. Maybe a surviving Sith artifact, an ancient presence, one of Palpatine's hidden agents, or even Palpatine himself still manipulating Jar Jar because he knows guilt is one of the easiest paths to the dark side. We know fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering, and Jar Jar has plenty of all four. That is the opening.
Ahmed Best Deserves the Chance to Play Both Sides of Order 66
Ahmed Best could return and play Jar Jar like we have never seen him before, older, broken, angry, still recognizably Jar Jar, but without turning the performance into a joke. He has earned that opportunity. The way people treated him after The Phantom Menace was gross. Fans did not just criticize the character, they went after the actor, and that backlash followed him for years.
Seeing him return as Kelleran Beq to save Grogu during Order 66 was one of the coolest full circle moments The Mandalorian has given us. A serious Darth Jar Jar could go even further, letting Best play both sides of that history: Beq, the Jedi who saved one of the most important children in the galaxy, and Jar Jar Binks, the man who helped Palpatine destroy the Jedi without realizing what he was doing. One actor connected to both sides of Order 66 is far more interesting to me than simply making Jar Jar pull out a red lightsaber and flip around like Yoda.
Ahsoka Season 2 Could Use Darth Jar Jar as a Vision Instead of a Retcon
The other possibility is that Ahsoka season 2 uses Darth Jar Jar as a vision built around deception. We know the Mortis gods are connected to what Baylan Skoll discovered on Peridea, with the father, son, and daughter representing balance, darkness, and light. Ahsoka has already moved into deeper, more mystical sides of the Force, which gives that show room to depict things that are not necessarily literal.
Ahsoka could encounter a possible timeline, a nightmare or corrupted version of history in which Jar Jar was a Sith. Bring Ahmed Best back, show Jar Jar at full power, and let the audience experience the insanity without claiming he secretly stood behind Palpatine for three movies. I think that is the safest route Lucasfilm could take.
Disney Has Been Testing This Idea Across Multiple Platforms
I am also starting to wonder if Lucasfilm is interested in something bigger than a two minute fake out. They have introduced this character in Lego, pushed him in Fortnite, and brought Best back into live action Star Wars. Best has openly said he wants to explore Darth Jar Jar. At some point that stops looking like Disney randomly repeating a meme and starts looking like Disney measuring the audience's reaction.
Studios do this all the time. You introduce an idea somewhere low risk, watch the engagement, sell the toys, and see whether people laugh it off, reject it, or want more. Darth Jar Jar passed that test.
The Real Obstacle Isn't Whether Disney Would Do It
Disney would absolutely do this if they believe the character can generate attention. The obstacle is making it mean something. If Darth Jar Jar appears purely as a social media meme made canon, it is going to get old fast. But if Lucasfilm treats him as a tragic character whose kindness was manipulated and whose mistakes destroyed his life, it could actually be a story worth telling.
Star Wars has made crazier ideas work before. A little green puppet becomes one of cinema's greatest Jedi masters. Darth Maul survives being cut in half because he was too angry to die. Boba Fett escapes a creature that slowly digests people for thousands of years. I still do not believe Darth Jar Jar was George Lucas's secret original plan, that Jar Jar was using mind tricks on the Senate, or that he intentionally gave Palpatine emergency powers. Could a broken, older Jar Jar fall to the dark side after realizing his mistake? Absolutely. And if Ahsoka season 2 opens a door on the World Between Worlds and we hear somebody in the darkness say his name, I do not know if the internet will ever recover.
Would you genuinely want Darth Jar Jar brought into canon, or is this one theory that needs to remain a meme forever?
