Ahsoka Season 2 Trailer Puts Hayden Christensen's Anakin Front and Center as the Empire Declares War
The new footage leans harder into Force ghost Anakin and a Thrawn led Empire storyline, and I think that is the right call after a mixed first season.
The Ahsoka season 2 trailer dropped at D23, and my overall reaction is that it looks a lot more epic than what we got in season one, with Hayden Christensen's Anakin pushed to the center of the story.
Going into this, I was not fully sold on the first season. When I first saw it, there were things I liked and remembered from Clone Wars, but the more I sat with it, I did not love it. As I put it, "it just seemed a little too inside baseball" and I did not respond to it as much as I wanted to. So heading into season two, I was hoping for real locations, more Hayden Christensen, and word that Ewan McGregor is supposed to be in it too. My questions were simple: is the tone going to change, are they going to bring more people into it, and is it going to feel less like homework?
Clone Wars Callbacks Open the Ahsoka Season 2 Trailer
The trailer opens right into Clone Wars material, with familiar outfits and shots that immediately called back to that show. From there it moves into the Empire's perspective, including a line declaring war on the rebel alliance and a reference to Thrawn's division, which tells me they are giving real screen time to the Empire's side of this conflict rather than staying locked to Ahsoka's point of view alone.
Hayden Christensen's Anakin Sounds More Involved Than Ever
There is a voice in the trailer that sounds like Hayden Christensen warning that something is "more and more dangerous than I thought," and Baylan is shown claiming knowledge of a power that could end wars. Between that and Sabine's material, Ahsoka's trial, and a beat involving Ezra, it genuinely feels like they are pushing Hayden's presence hard. As I said watching it, "It seems like they're going full Hayden."
My Verdict on Leaning Into Anakin's Force Ghost
I like that they are leading in and really showing how involved Hayden Christensen is here, more on the Force ghost side of it. We have not really seen Anakin in that form outside a brief appearance in an earlier special edition and the very end of season one, so the idea of him lending knowledge the way Obi-Wan did to Luke is great to me.
It Still Feels More Like Television Than Andor
My hesitation is that this still has a television look and leans into more of an animation style feel, whereas Andor had a more theatrical feel to it. That said, there seems to be a real overall plan tied to the Heir to the Empire storyline and what they intend to do with Thrawn, which plays into the Timothy Zahn novels. Declaring war on the rebellion fits that same track, and it would be a pretty big moment if Luke ends up in this series interacting with Hayden Christensen's Anakin.
The real test for me is the writing. Can they make you care and get invested enough, or will you once again need deep knowledge of all the animated shows to follow along? I am giving it a shot. What do you think, did the trailer win you over?
