Chandni Chowk to China Part 3: Chopsticks, a Parachute Umbrella and a Cosmic Kick
The third stretch of the Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone film moves from brawls to a training montage and a big finish
Part three of our run through Chandni Chowk to China takes us from brawls to a full training montage. By the closing fight, the reaction to his chi moment was "It's so good."
The Hindi gag and the chopstick fight drew laughs from us
The language joke landed early for us. After the line that nobody speaks Hindi here, the question of how anyone was conversing at all had us laughing. Then came the thought that he probably doesn't even know he speaks Hindi.
The fight that follows leans on chopsticks. It ends right on the chopsticks, exactly as had been called out moments before, with a "Back breaker" shouted along the way.
A Razr phone and an umbrella that turns into a parachute
A phone turned up that we recognized as a Razr, and the comment was, "Haven't seen one of those in a minute." Then came the umbrella, which becomes a parachute and jams. That drew a Mary Poppins line from our side and, as the romance kicked in, "Oh, now it's love." The reminder that followed got a laugh: "She still stole your visa though."
The picture reveal and a training montage built on chores
When the picture comes out and the family resemblance is revealed, we felt the film could have done more to make it stick: "They should have given Suzy like a scar or something." We agreed the portrait itself was a pretty good likeness, with "Props to the props."
The training needed shortcuts, since the talk was that learning it properly takes about 20 years, and we figured a crash course was in order. It starts with chores, prompting a "Wax the car?" call, and we flagged one moment as Bruce Lee's quote, exactly what we had been talking about. The horse stance, the kitchen skills ("You're going to be a great chef") and the climbing all drew reactions from us, along with a comparison to Rocky.
The cosmic kick finale drew a nine and a half
His chi was strong, and the line "The student has become the master" summed up the turn for us. The cosmic kick got a score: "Nine and a half. That's the highest praise." Part four is still to come, but this stretch ended on that cosmic kick.
