Agatha All Along Episode 3: My Three Theories on Who Teen Really Is
The first trial on the Witches' Road deepened the mystery around Teen, offered more of Alice Wu-Gulliver's backstory, and pushed Agatha's coven to work together
After episode three of Agatha All Along, I wasn't sure about Teen anymore, so I had three different ideas of who he might be: Wiccan, a child Agatha gave up to get the Darkhold, or the Darkhold itself in a new form. It was also the episode that took us onto our first trial on the Witches' Road, and out of all the episodes up to that point, this one gave me the most excitement.
Agatha All Along sparked conversation whether people loved it or not
I felt each of these episodes was so fun and explorative, not only in the world of Agatha but also in the world of Marvel. We got all these beautiful crumbs about the Witches' Road and about witches, and we finally heard Mephisto's name. I was having a good time on this journey.
Every time an episode ended, we had a week to dissect and digest the conversation around this new Marvel show, and I loved that there was such a spectrum in how people received it. Some people strongly disliked it and found it to be the absolute worst thing Marvel had ever put out. Then there were the diehard fans who were already making music videos of the Agatha song. I enjoyed the vibrant spirit the show was creating, because I feel like before, with these Marvel shows, if people didn't like one, we just didn't talk about it. We brushed it under the rug, or it was just a show.
I even think the people who hated this show were still tuning in to figure out whether they were actually going to enjoy it. This wasn't a show we disliked and never picked up again. It was a show we kept trying to consume, understand and accept, because we knew it was going to build a foundation for the rest of the shows. They finally said Mephisto's name, after all.
Redemption and second chances for women in their prime
I really think the theme of the entire series is redemption. It's about women in their prime who get a second chance, whether their magic is bound, whether they're trying to find answers about what happened to their mothers, or whether they're just trying to find a better life than the one they're leading. I think that's wonderful.
Heading into episode three, with its escape room style, I loved that each of these witches was getting her own opportunity to succeed. I appreciated the life and the journey each of these women was getting, and Teen as well. It isn't just Agatha's coven that she has cultivated. It's more than that. This is truly about each woman's individual journey, and we see it in the little breadcrumbs spilled across these episodes.
I think that makes the show so much richer. Whether you're new to Marvel and this is your very first Marvel show, or you're a connoisseur like me who finds those little nuggets and then dives right into the comic books to find the panel or volume that addresses them, it has something for everyone.
Teen could be Wiccan, Agatha's lost son, or the Darkhold
From here, spoilers. I loved that we got more information on Teen, and it left me conflicted. I spent a good portion of my breakdown of episode one working out who I thought Teen was. I thought, and I assume you thought, that he was Wanda's son, Wiccan. All signs pointed to Wiccan. Now that everyone was acknowledging the sigil on him, we all assumed Wanda put it there. But what if he isn't Wanda's son at all? What if he's the child Agatha gave up in order to get the Darkhold? And what if the child is the Darkhold?
So I had three ideas. Number one, it still could be Wiccan. There's a version where Mephisto takes Wanda's kids, and there's a whole comic book series about that. Number two, he could be Nicholas Scratch, or he could be another child Agatha gave up in order to get the Darkhold. I know there were references, or at least people believed, that Agatha's rabbit was a hint or a nod toward her son.
Number three, he could be the Darkhold itself, the book coming back in a new form. There's another comic in which Agatha tries to get the Darkhold back by possessing a group of Avengers and putting all these Marvel characters under her control as they beat up other characters. Then the Darkhold manifests itself as a child. "I figure at this point one of them has to be correct."
Alice Wu-Gulliver's backstory and why these women came together
I also loved that we got a little more about Alice Wu-Gulliver. We see her tattoo, and we get more backstory on her mother. I know that somehow all of these stories are going to align. There's a reason this particular group of women came together, and a reason they were all three miles from each other.
I do feel like Teen has a little bit to do with bringing these women together. You see that when Agatha talks to the potions witch, whose name I forgot in the moment. Agatha tells her, in essence, that they can take away her power but they cannot take away her knowledge, and that she'll always be powerful no matter what adversities come her way.
Agatha is a leader at her core, and the Witches' Road forces teamwork
Agatha builds her up because, despite everything, Agatha has always been a leader. "Is she the best leader at all times? No. Is she always someone you want to follow? No. But to her core, she is a leader." If only she used that in the right way. It's unfortunate that a lot of her power lies in taking powers from others to gain more. The situation she finds herself in is unfortunate, but it is what it is. She craves, desires and yearns for power, and more of it, and it's all a protection to keep herself safe.
I loved that she was building a newfound family with these women and Teen, which forces her to question whether it's good to go alone, and the road itself tells her no. "The road forces you to work together." We see that when Agatha tries not to take the wine, but the only way to escape the trial is for them to work together as a team and as a coven.
At that point I was so excited to see where Agatha would end up and who she would become once the season concluded. Since she has to steal powers from others to keep growing, would that still be her method by the end, or would her journey on the road fundamentally change how she gains her powers? I didn't know, but I was very excited to find out.
The episode that gave me the most excitement so far
I loved this episode. Out of all the episodes so far, it gave me the most excitement, especially considering that one of the characters was now dead. I'm sure she's not, and I had no doubt she would continue on. The show and these episodes were so interesting and so playful.
This one was very escape roomy, but I loved the puzzle, the escape room and the essence of the show in general, along with all its little nuggets and crumbs. I was very excited to dive into episode four.
Who do you believe Teen turns out to be, and which of these three theories seems closest to the mark?
