MobLand: did Jan plan Donnie's shooting? Season 2 theory
Many believe Jan snapped when she pulled the trigger. Her choice of meeting place, her phone call with Harry and the gun he gave her suggest otherwise.
Many fans believe Jan snapped when she shot Donnie in MobLand season 2, episode 6. I don't. I think Jan planned this all along, and the real questions are when and how. MobLand, the crime drama that premiered in 2025 starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, ends this episode with Donnie on the floor and blood all over Jan.
Donnie thought he held all the cards. He believed Jan would sit next to him and give him another chance to explain himself. She had already decided enough was enough. When she told Harry on the phone never to send anyone through that door, I thought she was making the biggest mistake of her life. I underestimated her. I should have remembered that this is Harry's wife.
Jan Chose the Pub and Never Meant to Show Up There
The pub was Jan's idea. She agrees to meet Donnie there, and he thinks he gets to decide how this plays out. He waits for a woman who never intends to show up the way he expects. He had expected to meet her at her house earlier, only for her to change the location. When he finally gets home, she's there holding the gift from her husband. Jan is there with a gun.
Nobody expected to see Jan with a weapon, but I'm not surprised. Jan has stabbed Harry before, and that time we could say she snapped. This one is different. I think that before she reached his house, and before Donnie saw her face and realized what trouble he was in, she had already planned it. She wanted to be with him, even if it wasn't out of love and was only a way to escape her toxic marriage. Once it became clear she was being used, not loved, I think that's where she decided to set things right.
She spoke to him in a way that gave him no reason to suspect anything had changed. She called him by the same name she used before. When he asked her to come over, she said she was busy. His life depended on this meeting, because he had already been commanded to get the wife, so he pushed even when she said no. That's when she suggested that particular pub and even the time. She didn't need to convince him all was well. To him she was just a hurt woman who needed answers.
Nobody Was Going to the Meeting to Talk
Donnie wasn't meeting her to explain himself. He was meeting her so he could lie to her, then kidnap her at the slightest chance and take her to his bosses. Jan wasn't meeting him for talks either. None of them were. I think Jan wanted to end him. That's the irony: they all wanted the meetup to happen. Donnie already had experience persuading her to trust him, so her offer gave him enough hope to keep him waiting.
A pub is no place to kill a man, unless you're Conrad. So Jan hid like a cat or a cobra, she deceived Donnie to get him away from his house, and when he was finally home, away from the prying eyes of the public, she pounced. She looked straight into his eyes and denied him the chance to try his "Babe, I can explain" routine on her.
Jan Had a Plan, but a Narrow One
I don't think Jan had it all figured out. This plan came when Harry told her she was in very serious danger. So perhaps she hadn't planned an escape, thought about witnesses, or worked out what follows if she successfully guns the man down. How does she deal with the evidence? Were there cameras in the house? I doubt that was part of her plans. Her plan might be real, but it's desperately narrow.
Why Jan Refused Harry's Protection
What I don't understand is Jan refusing Harry's protection. Harry sends one of his people to collect her, and instead of accepting and thanking him, she threatens to shoot herself if his people arrive. I don't think she could possibly do that. I thought she was going to say she'd shoot whoever came in, only to see her point the gun at her chin. She has nerve. Harry had no option but to call off his team.
That gives me a clue. One reason she would call off Harry's team is if she was expecting Donnie, because protective custody would stop her. She couldn't be with people who answer to Harry and be sent somewhere Harry chose. She had to do something privately, so she needed to get far away from them. On that call, I don't think she was in distress at all. She had a motive and an intention. She was furious with Harry and, most of all, with Donnie.
It was her fury at Harry that made her cheat. They're technically still married, so that was cheating, and she cheated for revenge. Now she had to take another revenge on Donnie for taking advantage of her. Even before Harry sent the team, Jan knew that's what he'd do if she was in danger. She knows her husband from the time they've spent together in this marriage.
Harry's Gift Goes From Defense to Offense
When Jan tells him, "Look what I found, Harry. The lovely, thoughtful gift you gave me," she isn't only being sarcastic. Why would Harry give her a weapon if he didn't want her to use it? She moves the gun from a defensive position to an offensive one. It looks as though Harry's family are becoming more like him. He made a method available to Jan, and she decided to use it herself.
Donnie Was the Puppet, Not the Puppeteer
Donnie wasn't having it easy either. He was under pressure because the people he answered to wanted him to deliver Jan. He was supposed to handle the negotiation, and Jan took it from him. We know more than Jan does about the abduction plan. She probably doesn't know the whole plan behind the man she just put down.
She was impatient. She could have given him time to explain himself and got to know the man better. But she was too smart for that. She didn't want another deception. Because Donnie had lied, she had already figured out he was a threat and could no longer let her guard down around him. I'd wanted to see him exposed in front of Jan and lose his advantage. Instead, all I see is blood, and her decision has consequences even if his intentions were vile.
The Case That Jan Snapped
The episode ended before we could hear Jan admit she planned this. Many stick with the snapped theory because of how she reacted when the blood was oozing and he fell. That doesn't mean she snapped. She has no experience with killing, and her shock only suggests she can't comfortably absorb what she's done.
The snapped camp argues she went there only to frighten him, maybe make him admit everything and force an answer out of him. That isn't far from the truth either, and the next episode will reveal whether she meant it. For me, everything that happened seems planned. I feel she had already given herself permission to hurt him, even if she hadn't thought about how it feels to shoot a man.
How Donnie Went From Jan's Escape to Her Danger
Jan didn't ask for this. She wanted to be loved and cherished, with a life that didn't keep getting interrupted by Harry's work. Donnie benefited from that. She wanted him to be the man Harry couldn't be. Then she found out he worked for the same kind of criminal world her husband was in.
Worse, she discovered he had been using their relationship to get close to her, when she saw missed calls on his phone. When Harry also warned her, it became clear that Donnie was the danger. The man who was supposed to be her escape became someone she had to fear.
Why I Think Jan Runs Back to Harry
Jan didn't prepare for what comes after, and my theory is that this is when she runs back to Harry. I think Jan finds her way back to him, because only the fixer can fix this mess. She wanted to use Donnie to repair her marriage, and though it didn't go to plan, I believe this is an opportunity to fix it. She has a body to deal with, and dangerous people may come looking for Donnie. Her attempt to escape Harry has become circular, whether she admits it or not.
I'm even more worried about what the boss Donnie was working for is going to do. That boss may use his death to control Harry, because this is no longer only about the Harrigans; Harry's family is now directly involved. Whether Jan will listen to Harry instead of hanging up on him, we've yet to see. The sooner she runs back to him the better, because she's no longer dealing only with her marriage. She's now in Harry's kind of business.
