Dragon Ball Super: Granolah's full color design revealed
Shonen Jump shared the complete color reference for Granolah, with and without his eye patch, as a guide for merchandise and a future anime adaptation
Shonen Jump's official Dragon Ball presence on YouTube revealed Toyotaro's full color design for Granolah. It's a complete look at the character in color, and it's meant as a guide for the people who'll need to know exactly what Granolah looks like.
At the time, that official Dragon Ball outlet had very little on it. Its usual content was hosted segments about merchandise, game news and similar updates, and it was aimed only at the Japanese audience, in Japanese.
Toyotaro's Granolah art is a color blueprint, not an anime model sheet
The reveal shows Granolah's colors, his head from several angles, closer detail on his face, and even his feet. It covers the character both with and without his eye patch. I know some people will look at it and think it resembles the anime sheets an anime character designer would produce. It does look like that, but that's not what this is.
This is a blueprint. It gives the merchandise people at Shonen Jump, at Jump magazine and eventually at the international V Jump a clear reference for what Granolah looks like in color. It's a full look at the character for whenever this arc gets adapted into Dragon Ball Super anime form.
The new anime designer will redraw Granolah for animators
When that adaptation happens, the new designer will take Toyotaro's art and redraw it in their own style, so the animators can then adapt it to the anime. That was still well down the road at the time, since the Moro arc would have to come to the anime first, before any Granolah arc.
This design is from Toyotaro, not from Toriyama. It's a traditional Dragon Ball design.
Does Granolah resemble Vegeta?
Some have said Granolah resembles Vegeta. I've even seen a theory claiming King Vegeta cheated on Vegeta's mom and had a baby with a Cerealian, producing this character. I don't know about that. "It's a wacky Dragon Ball theory," and there's no basis for it.
There are some similarities, I guess you could say. He doesn't have the widow's peak, though.
The official Dragon Ball website and fake character bios
At the time, a new official Dragon Ball website was being built. The plan was for it to carry content for international audiences, with material in English, French and several other languages for the rest of us to consume, including art like this. It was still under construction then, and the content was only in Japanese.
Around that time, a clip circulated showing character bios supposedly from that website. That was completely fake, totally fan made to fool people. You have to be careful with anything claiming to be an update from that site. When there's a tangible update, I'll report on it, other people covering Dragon Ball will report on it, and most importantly Shonen Jump will report on it on their social media pages.
People often ask me whether something like that is real. If it's not on any of the Jump media pages and it hasn't been reported on, "it's probably not real." I do appreciate people sending things my way, because maybe I didn't know about them. But when something changes on that website, we'll all know, because Shonen Jump is going to make a big announcement when it starts adding content little by little.
