A Fan Made Dragon Ball Transformation Tree Gets Most Things Right, but Broly and Kale Need Clarifying

A breakdown of the mortal and divine pathways on a fan chart of Goku's transformations, and why Broly's forms are not Super Saiyan 4

A fan made Dragon Ball transformation tree lays out every pathway Goku's transformations follow, and I agree with most of it. A few parts could still cause confusion, mainly around Broly, Kale and the Legendary Super Saiyan, so they need explaining.

A friend of mine named Sean sent the chart over to me. I don't know who made it, so I can't credit them. Whoever is responsible did a good job. The tree lists the different routes through Dragon Ball's transformations, and it covers both GT and Super. Before getting into the details, one thing to be aware of: none of the Heroes forms are on it.

The tree splits Saiyan power into mortal and divine paths

Starting all the way on the left, the creator of the chart gives two broad ways a Saiyan can go: mortal paths or divine paths. I like how they did that.

The mortal side holds the Classic branch, the Primal branch and the Legendary branch. The divine side branches off into an Angelic branch and a Godly branch.

The Classic and Primal branches cover Super Saiyan through Super Saiyan 4

The Classic branch is Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3. The chart doesn't include any of the sub forms, like Grade 2, Grade 3 or Ascended. That's fine. Those are mutations of Super Saiyan 1, so leaving them out works.

Next to it is the Primal branch: Oozaru, then Golden Oozaru, which leads to Super Saiyan 4. I think that's correct. I like the name Primal branch too, because it fits and makes sense for those forms.

Broly's Wrathful Saiyan state is not his version of Super Saiyan 4

The Legendary branch is the one I think needs to be talked about. This is the branch Broly takes, and it starts with Wrathful Saiyan. That's not an official term. The chart is referring to the way Broly uses his anger to contain his Great Ape power inside of him.

Many fans, and I've seen this talked about ad nauseam, are saying this is Broly's version of Super Saiyan 4, or how the series will canonize Super Saiyan 4. There are similarities with the Primal branch, because it is primal, but it's not the same thing. We have to stop talking about it that way.

If they decide to eventually give Broly a Super Saiyan 4 transformation, then we can talk about it. As of the time I'm writing, this is something unique to Broly.

The movie Broly's form isn't called Legendary Super Saiyan

Below that, the chart lists Legendary Super Saiyan. This version comes from Dragon Ball Super: Broly, not from the Dragon Ball Z Broly movie.

In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, though, the form isn't called Legendary Super Saiyan. It's called Full Power Broly. That form is dedicated to, and a tribute to, the Legendary Super Saiyan state Broly used in DBZ, but it's not the same thing.

Kale's Controlled Super Saiyan may be a separate line from Broly's

Here's where things get tricky and interesting. Below that, the chart has a picture of Kale labeled Controlled Super Saiyan. The chart isn't wrong here, but it needs some explanation.

The transformation Kale uses in Dragon Ball Super resembles Broly, and it could be seen as Legendary Super Saiyan, like a reboot of it. The same goes for what Broly does in the movie. It's as if they took the idea and repurposed it for two different characters. Where the chart says Controlled Super Saiyan, though, we don't know if Broly can do that. We haven't seen him do it.

I believe the Broly transformation in the movie is not the same thing Kale does in Super. They have similarities, and both are based on the same original concept from Dragon Ball Z movie 8, the first Broly movie, but I don't think they're the same thing at all. I think Kale has a different transformation, a different mutation of what that may be. So I don't think they're linked. I think it could be a separate line, something like a Universe 6 line, but I don't see it being the same thing.

The Godly branch runs from Super Saiyan God to Blue Evolution, with Rose missing

Over on the divine pathway, the Godly branch has Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue and Blue Evolution. Full Power Blue from the manga isn't there, which is fine. The manga forms aren't really on the chart, but they are different, a different concept.

Rosé is not on the chart either, conspicuous by its absence. Rosé fits with Blue, so it would be the same thing. You could even make another path, something like a crooked path or a corrupt path, and put Rosé there if you want.

The chart was made before Vegeta unveiled the Hakaishin form he used in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 74. Because we don't know much about it, there's not much to say yet. I'm sure there'll be an updated version of the chart with it at some point, and it would probably fall under the godly tier.

The Angelic branch treats silver haired Ultra Instinct as a transformation

The Angelic branch has Ultra Instinct Omen and Autonomous Ultra Instinct, even though Autonomous is a dub name. The silver haired form is completed Ultra Instinct.

The chart doesn't include controlled, mastered or completed Ultra Instinct, but that's the same thing. The difference is only that Goku can do it at will. It also leaves out what Goku has done more recently, which is using Ultra Instinct power in his other forms. That's different. That's Goku tapping into Ultra Instinct, not a transformation. The silver hair, the full powered Ultra Instinct, is a transformation.

My verdict: not a bad system, but we don't know much about Kale's power or the rage forms

Overall, this is not a bad system to look at whatsoever. Keep in mind that we don't know much about Kale's power. The same goes for Trunks and his Super Saiyan Rage form, and for Broly's version of rage. We don't know much about these forms.

That's not to say the creator of the chart is wrong. We just don't have enough information, and hopefully soon we will.
