How Supergirl Actually Began With Lois Lane, Not Kara Zor-El
The character's roots trace back to a 1943 comic dream sequence before Supergirl ever existed.
The first adaptation resembling Supergirl was not Supergirl at all. It was Lois Lane, in a 1943 comic where Lois was hospitalized and dreamed that she gained Kryptonian powers through a blood fusion with Superman. In that dream, she escaped and began a life as a superhero, even wearing a costume that copied his.
In the actual story, Lois got her powers a different way, through Lex Luthor, and took on a secret identity by wearing a blonde wig.
Fans responded so well to this female counterpart of Superman that she was brought back as a recurring character, and that is how Supergirl was born.
Supergirl's real name is Kara Zor-El. She survived the explosion of her home planet just as her cousin did, and lived a dual life on Earth until she found her cousin, Clark Kent.
