Wolverine MCU rumor: will Logan debut in Alpha Flight?
An insider claims Alpha Flight and X-Force movies are in development, and a scooper says Logan could arrive with Canada's superhero team first
A new rumor says Marvel Studios wants Wolverine to debut in an Alpha Flight movie rather than in its X-Men reboot. An insider claims an Alpha Flight movie and an X-Force movie are in development, and a separate social media scooper claims Marvel's plan is for Logan to debut with Canada's superhero team rather than in the X-Men reboot.
This could all still be rumors. If it is the plan, I like it, because it matches what I've argued for years: Marvel should launch the X-Men in a big team movie first, then spin off solo stories for the characters who prove popular, Wolverine included.
Insider claims Alpha Flight and X-Force movies are in development
According to a report on the rumors, Marvel Studios may be expanding its mutant saga with two new team-up movies. Marvel will release its X-Men reboot in 2028, and the new saga will almost certainly focus heavily on mutants. Unlike The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the report argues, the X-Men franchise opens the door to many spin-offs, from individual characters like Wolverine and Cable to teams such as X-Force and X-Factor.
The insider claims an Alpha Flight movie is in development, along with an X-Force movie. "They really want multiple Mutant projects in the next saga," the insider says. It is not the first Alpha Flight rumor. The same insider also claims Marvel Studios is still keen to do something with the Young Avengers and the Champions after Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. I heard a long time ago that Young Avengers was going to be a Disney+ movie, and I think that's smart. A Young Avengers movie could work, and I think it would be popular.
Wolverine could debut in Alpha Flight before joining the X-Men
The biggest claim comes from the social media scooper, who says Marvel Studios' plan is for Wolverine to debut in Alpha Flight, not in X-Men. The report reads that as Kevin Feige taking a different approach to Logan, one more in line with the comics, so audiences get to know him before he joins Professor X's team. The report calls an Alpha Flight movie led by Wolverine an intriguing possibility, saying the Canadian team has plenty of storytelling potential but Logan would be the big draw.
What is Alpha Flight, and how is Wolverine connected?
The report describes Alpha Flight as Canada's premier superhero team, first introduced in Uncanny X-Men in 1979 and created by John Byrne. The government originally assembled it to protect the country. The roster has included Guardian, Vindicator, Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, Puck and Shaman. Wolverine's story ties into the team through the Canadian organization Department H.
How the MCU's Wolverine can differ from Hugh Jackman's
When Hugh Jackman took the role, Wolverine was one of the most popular comic book characters of all time, but no one had ever played him in live action. Jackman had no predecessor to be compared with, so the filmmakers could set up a whole bunch of things. You have to keep that in mind going into this iteration, because you have to know what's going to be different from what Hugh Jackman, Bryan Singer and all those guys did when they introduced him. It seems Marvel will take more inspiration from the comic books, and that sounds intriguing to me, if they do it the right way.
Rumor: Is Jeremy Allen White the new Wolverine?
If Marvel is planning this, I think it adds more weight to the rumor that Jeremy Allen White is the new Wolverine. My reasoning is about how he would be introduced: rather than making an X-Men movie and waiting for the second X-Men movie to put White front and center as Wolverine, Marvel would make the X-Men movie and then give him a separate mutant franchise through Alpha Flight. This could all still be rumors, but if the plan is true, that's how it would work.
Why Wolverine makes Alpha Flight easy to market
There's also a marketing upside. If Marvel does Alpha Flight with Wolverine front and center and puts him on the posters with the claws, it's easy to sell. An Alpha Flight movie without anybody recognizable would be harder to market.
Why Marvel should launch the X-Men first, then spin off Wolverine
I've long argued Marvel should launch the X-Men first, then spin off solo films, whether that's a Cyclops movie or a Wolverine movie. Many people pushed back. They told me you have to do team X-Men movies only, and you can't do single movies. I never understood why. It makes more sense to set up the X-Men in a big movie, get everybody to care, and then branch out, giving standalone movies to the characters who prove popular. That's the future of the MCU, as long as Marvel is careful on budgets.
The first worry when you hear Wolverine is getting his own movie again is that Marvel will focus only on him: "They're not going to let the X-Men breathe." This plan does the X-Men story first. I still think you'll see a post-credits scene in the X-Men movie that introduces Logan, maybe in the way they did it with Civil War. I think it was the end of Ant-Man, when they had Bucky tied up. Something like that gets people excited, and the questions of when Logan will team up with the X-Men, and when he'll finally join them, keep people invested while they wait. I like this plan, if this is indeed the plan.
What other creators are saying
More on Wolverine →I think if the Jeremy Allen White report is true, recasting Wolverine now is the right move since Marvel is already recasting the rest of the X-Men, likely via a solo film that later folds him into the team, while Hugh Jackman's version closes out in Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Jeremy Allen White as Wolverine: is recasting Logan right? →
I believe Jeremy Allen White has had talks with Marvel about Wolverine, largely thanks to his writer connection, and I like him for the role despite looking different from Hugh Jackman. Nothing is confirmed, but I think it makes sense and could work well.
Jeremy Allen White as Wolverine: is Marvel recasting for X-Men? →
My take on a painful Wolverine scene draws sympathy, teasing and one blunt piece of advice
Wolverine wins, though just barely. Spider-Man is stronger and slightly faster, but Wolverine's superior toughness, healing factor and adamantium claws mean he only needs to land one hit to turn the fight, while Spider-Man struggles to ever put him down for good.
