WandaVision episodes 7 to 9: a first-time viewer's verdict
The Agatha Harkness twist, the Vision answers and an emotional finale closed out WandaVision with a clear verdict: she loved it
The final three episodes of WandaVision hit my friend Sam harder than she expected. She is going through the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. When I asked for her verdict on her first Marvel series, she said, "I loved it. It was so good." WandaVision (2021) stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. These were episodes seven, eight and nine, the end of the series.
The Agatha Harkness reveal in WandaVision episode seven
Episode seven ends with the reveal that the neighbor, Agnes, is Agatha Harkness, and that she had been behind it all along. The reaction to that moment was simple: "What an ending." Even before episode eight started, Sam was locked in.
In the discussion afterward, the point was made that the show set Agatha up well. She always came across as just the neighbor. Looking back, there were hints, such as a scene where she asked to take a moment again, as if she was the one pulling the strings. With other characters you might say you didn't trust them, but nobody said that about Agatha. Kathryn Hahn was called "such a good actress."
Episode eight explains how Wanda built Westview and what happened to Vision
Episode eight shows that Hayward refused to give Wanda Vision's body, which she never took, and it ends with Agatha telling Wanda that her chaos magic makes her the Scarlet Witch. The post-credits scene reveals Hayward has Vision's actual body.
The reaction was that the episode answered the questions about Vision: how he survived, how Wanda made all of this and who was controlling it. There was also praise for the show waiting until late in the series to show what Westview looked like before Wanda changed it.
The WandaVision finale and the Vision with restored memories
In the finale, Agatha claims Wanda's power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. Jimmy Woo also gets more to do here than in Ant-Man 2, where I think he was just there for the jokes.
There was anger at having to see Vision die and the couple split up again. Because the sitcom format gave more time with them, more laughs and more vulnerable moments, it pulled you in further. Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen were credited with a real connection. Sam admitted she had hoped for something miraculous and a happily ever after. The question left open was what happens to the other Vision, who has the real body and his memories restored but not the Mind Stone.
What comes after WandaVision
As I explained to Sam at the time, I think we have two more series before we go back to the movies. One is relevant to a movie that had come out not long before, and then we will do Loki, which Sam had already seen mentioned. Others we're probably not going to cover together, and it would be up to her whether to see them on her own.
Sam summed up WandaVision in one line: "I didn't really think I was going to get that emotional."
What other creators are saying
More on WandaVision →I theorized Wanda was a mutant whose X-gene the Mind Stone unlocked, that Mephisto likely took her children, and that Agatha Harkness and Doctor Strange would help her learn Darkhold magic. I believed losing her kids would push her over the edge into becoming the true, omega-level Scarlet Witch.
Looking back at my WandaVision theory on how Wanda became the Scarlet Witch →
The misogynistic flatulence-and-silencing spells in the Galdrabók are super misogynistic, and I think The Game gets genuinely bad and brainwashy once it moves past its decent early confidence tips, so skip it and read She Comes First instead.
With VisionQuest renewing interest in the show, here is how I reacted to the Agnes reveal, Monica's powers and the theories that came with them
We hoped for closure and a Doctor Strange cameo; the finale gave us the Scarlet Witch, a gentle goodbye to Vision and loose ends that matter again with VisionQuest.
