Resident Evil 10 Could Bring Chris, Claire, Leon and Jill Together, but RE6 Is a Warning
A rumored 2029 target, the Veronica remake, Requiem's Spencer DLC and a producer's talk of a crossover point toward a reunion. The question is whether it can stay scary.
Resident Evil 10 could bring Chris, Claire, Leon and Jill back into the same nightmare, and this time there's something more interesting underneath the rumors than a blurry screenshot. A Resident Evil producer has talked about preparing for a crossover, and I think Resident Evil 10 could end up being one of the biggest games we've seen in the horror genre.
Put that next to the rumored 2029 release target, the upcoming Code Veronica remake and what's happening with Requiem's DLC, and it's an exciting possibility. There's also one giant problem, because Resident Evil already tried getting everybody together for the biggest game possible. A quick warning: this piece talks about Requiem's ending, so if you're still working through that game, you may want to save this for later.
The 2029 date from Dusk Golem is an internal target, not a release date
Dusk Golem has pointed to 2029 as the internal target for the next mainline Resident Evil. That would put it roughly three years after Requiem. This isn't a release date from Capcom, though. Even the original claim allowed for it slipping into 2030 or 2031. An internal target is what developers hope will happen if everything works out perfectly.
This particular rumor was circulating back in February. So if you're seeing 2029 presented as though somebody just uncovered a brand new announcement, that part has been around for a while.
Capcom's executive producer has talked about connecting the series' two tracks
The more interesting development is what Capcom has said about where the series is going. The executive producer has described Resident Evil as running along two tracks. The numbered games move the story forward, while the remakes revisit the past.
According to the reported translation of his comments, Capcom has been building connections between those tracks, with Village and Requiem pushing that setup further. I'm pretty sure he even used the word crossover. That doesn't confirm Resident Evil 10's characters, setting, story or anything else. But it does give this conversation something much stronger than the idea that 10 is a big number, so everybody must be coming back. Capcom is thinking about how these different eras connect, and the question is what happens when they finally collide.
The Resident Evil Veronica remake puts Claire Redfield back in front of players
This is where Claire Redfield becomes interesting. The Code Veronica remake, officially titled Resident Evil Veronica, is on the way. We don't have a confirmed date yet, so don't lock yourself in. Think about what that release does for Claire. It puts her back in front of a massive modern audience, in a story built around finding Chris and surviving another Umbrella disaster.
For longtime fans, that's a return to a character they love. For newer players, it could be the game that makes Claire their favorite. Then imagine a new mainline game shoving her right back into the spotlight. That's the theory I'm getting behind. Not because a remake automatically guarantees a sequel appearance, but because the opportunity is sitting right there: give players a reason to reconnect with Claire, then show them where her life has gone.
And please let her matter. Don't bring Claire back so she can hand Chris a folder, say something concerning and disappear for another decade. Give her a story. Give her decisions that hold weight. Give her a reason to be the person we're playing.
Chris Redfield has unfinished business with the BSAA
Chris already has unfinished business. Village left us with the BSAA using bioweapon soldiers. That's a substantial problem for an organization supposedly fighting bioterrorism. When your anti-monster organization starts deploying monsters, at some point somebody needs to revisit the employee handbook.
That storyline gives Chris a reason to investigate the people behind the missions instead of surviving whatever creature falls through the ceiling or jumps out of the lake next. For me, that's a much better starting point than immediately announcing a global war. Who approved the soldiers? Who benefited from them? How much of the organization can he trust, if any at all? You could build a terrifying game around Chris discovering that the backup he called in is the thing he needs to escape or get rid of.
Requiem's DLC will explore Spencer further, but the mansion is only a rumor
The next clue might arrive before Resident Evil 10 is revealed. Requiem has story DLC in development, and the game's writer has indicated that the expansion will explore Spencer's arc further. One of the franchise's most important names still has more story attached to him.
There are also rumors about a return to the Spencer Mansion, but keep those separate. A writer discussing Spencer doesn't automatically confirm the mansion, Jill as a playable character or a reunion with the original cast. So stay calm. Would I want that? Yes, absolutely. "Put me in a horrible hallway with three bullets in a door I don't trust, I'm there."
The bigger question is what the DLC will tell us. Does it explain more of this game's past, or does it leave something unresolved that pushes the series forward? That distinction could tell us more about the next game than another dozen anonymous character lists on the internet.
Leon's ring gives him something to lose
Speaking of people turning tiny details into character lists, there's Leon's ring. Apparently this franchise can survive 30 years of biological disasters, but one piece of jewelry brings the entire community to its knees. Fans have been arguing Ada versus Claire, examining charms, weapon designs and anything else that might qualify as evidence.
The director has deliberately kept that answer open ended, emphasizing that Leon now has somewhere to go home to. It's an interesting detail, but it isn't confirmation that he married Claire, and it definitely doesn't confirm the playable cast of Resident Evil 10. Personally, I'm more interested in what it gives Leon to lose after everything he's survived. The idea that he has a peaceful life waiting somewhere adds something. Suddenly getting home means more than getting out of the building.
Resident Evil 6 shows the danger of a bigger crossover
There's a catch with the entire crossover idea. Resident Evil 6 already showed us that more characters, more campaigns and bigger explosions don't automatically make a better Resident Evil game. You can love parts of that game and still recognize the danger. Keep escalating until everybody's saving the entire planet, and eventually a locked door stops feeling threatening. You're left wondering why Chris hasn't driven a vehicle through it.
"I don't want Resident Evil 10 to feel obligated to become the franchise's Avengers movie." I want Capcom to bring these characters together because the situation and the writing need them, not shoehorned in. They should have different information, priorities, maybe even reasons to disagree. Claire could be trying to protect someone Chris considers a threat, or Jill could uncover evidence that makes Leon question the entire mission. Then the reunion creates tension and makes sense.
Keep some vulnerability in it, too. Experience shouldn't mean these people automatically understand every infection, creature or organization involved. Let them encounter something their previous victories didn't prepare them for. I think that's how you make a veteran character frightening to play again: you take away the certainty that being good at this will be enough, or that they're going to live.
A Resident Evil reunion should make me nervous
There's a promising picture forming: a rumored 2029 target, Veronica bringing Claire back into focus, DLC exploring more of Spencer, and producer comments suggesting Capcom has been connecting the old and new stories deliberately. What we don't have yet is confirmation of Resident Evil 10's cast, a guaranteed all star lineup or a story.
But if this is where Capcom is heading, which I think it is, "I want a reunion that makes me nervous." Seeing Jill walk into a room should get me excited. Realizing she's scared of what's inside that room should do the rest.
