Resident Evil Veronica reportedly getting a substantial story expansion, according to Dusk Golem
A leaked DLC plan for the unreleased remake could connect to Capcom's hinted crossover between the numbered games and the remakes, and maybe to a bigger future for Claire.
Resident Evil Veronica is apparently getting DLC, and we don't even have an exact release date for the game yet. According to the leaker Dusk Golem, it won't be a small add-on: it's being described as a substantial story expansion. The more I dig into it, the more it starts connecting to something Capcom has already hinted at about the future of the series.
So I want to go through the leak itself, and then talk about where Resident Evil could be heading, because I'm really excited about all of this. Later in this piece I'll also get into my own theory about what Capcom might be setting up for Claire in Resident Evil 10.
Dusk Golem claims Resident Evil Veronica will get a substantial story expansion
The report comes from Dusk Golem, who has claimed that Resident Evil Veronica will receive DLC, and that it will be a substantial story expansion. Part of why I'm paying attention is that this is something he has continued to stand by. It's coming from the same leaker each time.
Plans can change during development, so nothing is officially official until it happens. And the game isn't even out yet, so talking about DLC for an unreleased game is kind of absurd. But that's what we do here.
I do think the useful part of this leak or rumor is that Capcom may see room to expand Veronica beyond the main remake. And honestly, this setting does give them options. Code Veronica already has a lot happening around Claire and Chris. An additional perspective could let you experience a different part of the outbreak, maybe explore a character's actions outside the main campaign, or follow something the original story moved past quickly.
The real question is whether that extra chapter has a strong idea of its own behind it. I also want to know whether it ends up being content cut from the base game, meaning material from the original that the remake leaves out, or something completely unique.
A new character perspective, like Separate Ways, is the only Veronica DLC idea I can think of
Playing from a different character's perspective can change the experience when their abilities and priorities actually shape how the game plays. I think this is where the DLC idea connects to the wider series. Resident Evil has a huge cast, and a mainline game can only give so many of those characters meaningful time. Someone can be important to the Resident Evil world and still go years without getting much to do in a new playable story.
That's where an expansion can help. A smaller campaign gives Capcom space to kind of focus on one character or one situation without stretching it into a full standalone release. If they're trying to drive the overarching story, they can do that with an expansion and still tell a complete story. That could be what they're doing with this Resident Evil Veronica expansion.
We've already seen how well another perspective can fit into Resident Evil with Separate Ways. Ada has her own objectives, and following her gives you a different way into the events around Leon. That kind of approach makes the world feel bigger than whoever you're controlling in the main campaign.
So when I consider what they could do for a Code Veronica remake expansion, the only thing that really comes to mind is the perspective of another character. That's just the only thing I can think of. If they don't do something like that, you get into the territory of releasing DLC content that probably could have just made it into the base game.
Expansions could fill the gap left by smaller spin-off games
That lines up with what we've heard from Dusk Golem. His reporting suggests these expansions could fill the gaps previously served by smaller spin-off titles. So doing something from a third character's perspective would make a lot of sense. You've got your A and B, and then you've got an opportunity to tell another side story in the expansion that drives the narrative further.
That's the reported direction, not a Capcom strategy that's been announced. But I personally see the appeal, and I actually like that aspect. You have people who already bought these games, so you might as well give them spin-off stories that make sense for that world, Resident Evil Veronica for instance, rather than doing a separate spin-off game that might not have the best sales. If you have something like a Separate Ways type of story, it's better to release it as an expansion than as a separate standalone game.
I also think it's worth saying to Capcom, and I love your games, that some ideas obviously deserve their own game. You don't have to force an expansion if the idea is good. I'm probably preaching to the choir, and they probably already know this. The important part is giving that story enough identity to justify the extra time we spend there, while also having it relate to the overarching story of Resident Evil Veronica.
Requiem's rumored expansion may tie into Oswell E. Spencer
I'm expecting the same thing from Resident Evil Requiem. If they decide to do a Separate Ways style DLC from the perspective of another character, I think that's great. But it has to be a character who fits and makes sense for the story of Requiem. Otherwise, what are you doing? Why give us DLC for a game that has nothing to do with our main character?
I also see these DLCs as a really good opportunity to dive further into the lore of the overarching series. We don't actually know this, but the rumor is that Requiem's expansion will have ties to Oswell E. Spencer and the Spencer Mansion. That makes a lot of sense given the Spencer teaser in Resident Evil Requiem. He's one of the overarching antagonists of the franchise, so a DLC that delves into his story is a great idea.
Capcom doing the same thing for Veronica and the rest of these story DLCs also makes a lot of sense. Capcom knows what they're doing, I guess. So the idea that Resident Evil Veronica is getting DLC isn't something I'm surprised or shocked about, especially while we're still waiting on Requiem's DLC, which is showing no signs of releasing anytime soon.
Capcom releasing Veronica and then later releasing a Veronica DLC, maybe sometime after Resident Evil Zero releases, would fit the way they've operated for about the last game or so.
Veronica DLC could feed the crossover Capcom has described
Then there's the big crossover discussion, which I've talked about recently. Capcom described two tracks for Resident Evil: the ongoing story in the numbered games, and the older stories being revisited through remakes. Jun Takeuchi discussed those two tracks eventually coming together, pointing to references involving Umbrella, Spencer and Raccoon City as part of preparing for that crossover.
So when you consider the Veronica DLC leak or rumor, Capcom has another opportunity to spend time with these characters and revisit something that matters later. Since we know there are going to be references to Umbrella, Spencer and Raccoon City, perhaps the Veronica DLC could add another piece to that puzzle, and Capcom could use the expansions to build toward one big crossover event.
It would be kind of like Fortnite, where there are different chapter events, but stories are also being told through the season updates. Imagine if Capcom used the expansions to drive the overarching narrative, telling the story that eventually unfolds in a future big crossover. You could also describe it in MCU terms: the expansions are the post-credit scenes that push the narrative forward, and then your Infinity War and your Endgame are the big culmination of it all.
My theory: Veronica could build Claire up for Resident Evil 10
Resident Evil Veronica is putting iconic characters back in front of a massive audience. Longtime fans get to revisit them, while newer fans get a version of their story that fits the way they play Resident Evil today. For Claire, that could matter well beyond one launch, and I think Capcom has a lot of opportunities to carry that momentum.
That brings me to my theory. If Capcom is giving Claire this kind of attention through Veronica, could it eventually lead to a bigger role in Resident Evil 10? This is my speculation, and it has nothing officially to do with Resident Evil 10. But what if they're building Claire up to give her the kind of Leon moment we got with Requiem, only in Resident Evil 10? They'd be reintroducing a major character through a substantial remake, potentially giving that release another story afterward, and building interest around her.
Think about what Capcom did with Resident Evil 4. It had Leon in it, it was a wild success, and I think it was up for game of the year. It reestablished Leon Kennedy and brought him to the forefront, basically telling people this is the guy from the franchise. They could be doing the same thing with Veronica: give Claire a remake that's worthy, a game people absolutely love, and then build her up for a big reveal in Resident Evil 10.
I think that would be really impactful, not just for the longtime fans but for new people too, who'd be thinking, "Hey, I know this person. I played this game a few years back and Claire was in it." Then the Game Awards happen, Claire shows up, and she's back, looking a bit older but still great. The same thing could happen for Chris, establishing him with the remake and then doing the big reveal in RE10. I'm not saying these characters are going to be in RE10. We don't know. I'm just saying it makes sense.
Capcom has a lot of Resident Evil coming, and each game needs a reason to stand out
The story is building toward the eventual release of Resident Evil 10, which I'm really excited about, though it's going to be a ways away. Look at the larger picture of what's being reported. Requiem has an official story expansion. Veronica is scheduled for 2027, with an additional story expansion rumored or leaked. Reports also point toward Resident Evil Zero happening, and I'd say the Resident Evil Zero remake is definitely going to happen. Then there's another remake of the original Resident Evil, and then Resident Evil 10.
That's a lot of Resident Evil, even before you start imagining extra projects like the various expansions. This is where Capcom has to be really careful, because development is tricky. Games are going to move, and internal priorities will change. An expansion being discussed for one project doesn't establish that every future release would get one. What this does give us is a possible direction: Capcom could keep moving the series forward while revisiting older chapters with additional stories, creating more room in between those releases.
The challenge for Capcom is making all of that feel worth playing. If we get several Resident Evil projects relatively close together, each one needs a reason to stand out. Even with a familiar returning character, the actual experience has to be what keeps people there. That's where the balance between horror and action becomes really important. One game could be built around vulnerability and survival horror, while another might give you a bit more freedom.
I think that's why Requiem sold so well, because they really struck that balance between action and horror. My fear is Capcom taking every single release and using that same mixture because it's the safe option. My biggest hope is that they focus on the experience and don't try to be formulaic. Give us good stories and good games, and we'll keep buying. I don't have to lecture Capcom on how to make a good game, because they've clearly been on a tear.
Overall, I'm really optimistic about the future of Resident Evil. A Veronica remake with an additional story expansion gives more room for familiar characters, and a future that keeps moving beyond the remakes is an exciting possibility. There are so many other stories they could tell, and I'm just here along for the ride.
Do you think Resident Evil Veronica will hit its schedule of around early 2027, or has the release date moved internally?
