Ash always knew the chestburster scene in Alien was coming
His serious glances at Kane hint that he expected what was about to happen
Something you may not know about Alien (1979), starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt and John Hurt, is that Ash always knew the chestburster scene was going to happen.
He does look very surprised at how terrible it was. But he's looking around, being serious and watching Kane, because he knows something is going to happen.
I've also pointed out before that he shut off the monitor when Ripley came into the room. He didn't want her to see that there was an alien inside of Kane.
