Avengers: Doomsday X-Men Trailer: Why I Think Doom Is After Cyclops's Child

Sentinels at the X-Mansion, Professor X's old wheelchair, Magneto's Genosha and why Rachel Summers may be Doom's target

The X-Men trailer for Avengers: Doomsday ended with Cyclops taking off his visor, screaming and firing his optic blasts while Sentinels walk in the background. I think that's one of the greatest Marvel shots we've gotten. My theory is that Doctor Doom attacked the X-Mansion looking for one specific gifted youngster, probably the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey.

The teaser confirmed that the original Fox X-Men, with pretty much all the original cast, were coming into the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday. It doesn't give you much, but it also gives you a lot at the same time. Many of the questions it raises lead to theories about which of Cyclops's children Doom is hunting.

I believe Doom's Sentinels, not the X-Men's past, are attacking the X-Mansion

Some people believe the trailer could be showing a point back in time, part of the X-Men's history that we don't know. Days of Future Past created a new timeline and a new future for the X-Men, one where Cyclops is alive and doesn't die. That means a whole different universe with a whole different history. So there is a chance this is Sentinels attacking at some point in their past.

I don't believe that's the case. We've heard plenty of reports for a while that Doom uses Sentinels, or perhaps Doombots, to attack the X-Mansion. These look like Sentinels, and that's what I think we're seeing here. There have also been many leaked photos from Unbox PhD, who was on set with a drone, showing what seems to be probably the backyard of the X-Mansion with destroyed Sentinel pieces everywhere.

It looks like Cyclops perhaps destroys at least a couple of them, because a couple are visible in the shot: two legs walking on the left and two legs walking on the right. Interestingly, the legs on the right could possibly be walking away from him, or simply standing there looking at him.

The X-Mansion is damaged but still standing

The trailer moves down through the building. On what appears to be the top floor there's damage, and that's important, because the building is still standing. The school is still there and doesn't seem completely destroyed. In the Cyclops shot it does look like everything is destroyed, but based on the leaked photos and the railings visible in the shot, I think that's the backyard.

I don't think the entire X-Mansion gets destroyed. At least I hope not, and if it does, I hope not many of the mutants we like are inside, because it doesn't look like they might survive that. The second floor is still intact but clearly messed up. On the first floor there's the broken sign for Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and damage everywhere. Something happened inside the school, and that is probably Doom.

A parenthood theme points to Doom hunting a child with the Phoenix Force

Children seem to be a big theme, and we've heard that parenthood or fatherhood is going to be a big theme of the movie as well. We already know Doom wants Franklin Richards, the son of Sue Storm and Reed Richards. The Thor teaser showed us his daughter Love, and the Captain America one showed us his child. There's a child theme running through these teasers.

Perhaps Doctor Doom is after one specific gifted youngster at this school. I'm thinking it's probably the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey, though it could be the son. Their kids, whether that's Cable or their daughters across separate timelines, can possess the Phoenix Force. I think that's probably what Doom wants, because he's after massive power. Franklin Richards has the power cosmic, and Love has the power of eternity.

Imagine Doom trying to get a child with the Phoenix Force that he could control. In theory, he could control these kids more easily than Cyclops, who is going to fight back. Not that the kids won't, but "it's easier to defeat a kid than it is a grown-up."

Why Cyclops looks like he's screaming in pain

We don't know exactly what happened, but I do believe Doom entered the school and possibly took Cyclops's child or killed someone close to him. That's why Cyclops looks like he's yelling in pain, and obviously in anger as well. As he fires his optic blast, it looks like something happened, perhaps somebody dying to a Sentinel, to make him go completely insane. I'm here for it, because it's one of the best shots we've ever gotten.

Professor X's old wheelchair separates him from Multiverse of Madness

Again, we don't know the exact events because of Days of Future Past, or how Marvel is going to play this. But we do see Professor X in his military uniform, which also appeared in X-Men '97, so it's comic accurate. They're using the old wheelchair, and I think there's a reason for that.

They're not using the floating yellow one so they can distinguish this from Multiverse of Madness, where Professor X died. There's probably a decent chance he's going to die in this as well. As much as I don't want him to, "I'm tired of seeing him die on screen." Because of the multiverse it's related in a way, but it's not the same universe as Multiverse of Madness. This is a completely different Professor Xavier with the original chair, which tells us this is the original X-Men from the early 2000s.

Magneto and Charles may be regrouping, perhaps after moving people to Genosha

Then we see his good friend Magneto, who seems to be in an almost classic outfit. There's purple under what looks like a robe, so he seems to be wearing a classic Magneto look underneath. We haven't seen the helmet, and I'm sure they're saving that for the movie.

I love the shot of the two of them holding hands. In the windows behind them, something seems to be glowing, like fire. We've heard reports that Magneto has established Genosha in their universe, so if there were people in the X-Mansion, perhaps they got them out and took them there. The building clearly looks abandoned, with lots of damage. I think the Sentinels have already attacked, the mansion survived, and now they're regrouping to decide what to do, perhaps preparing to go to the 616 universe and track Doom down.

Magneto joins the fight if he wasn't there before, and he gives the monologue the entire time, including the line "death comes for us all." I think death in that line is definitely Doctor Doom. Yes, they are enemies at times, but they are friends. One of my favorite scenes is from the old X-Men, when Professor X dies and Magneto looks at him and says "Charles," because he still loves him. This shot gives me the same vibes.

I lean toward Rachel Summers as Doom's target

Doom seems to be after very specific things. Otherwise, why randomly go to the X-Men universe and attack the X-Mansion? He has to be looking for something, and I think the Phoenix Force makes the most sense. Given the parenthood and children theme, I think it probably is Rachel Summers who has it.

I don't like thinking about this, but perhaps Cyclops goes crazy because maybe Jean dies in this fight. Maybe the Phoenix Force transfers to Rachel. It would be incredibly hard to kill Jean with the Phoenix Force, so who knows. Maybe Jean never had it, only Rachel does, and Jean dies that way, which might be why Cyclops goes berserk. It could also be because Doom gets Rachel and takes her away.

Regardless, I think Doom tries to get one of Cyclops's kids. It could be any of them, but I'm feeling like Rachel Summers makes the most sense, because Doom would definitely want the Phoenix Force. It could be Cable, but they didn't bring Cable back for Deadpool and Wolverine, and I don't think they're going to bring him back for Avengers: Doomsday, which is why I lean toward Rachel.

Seeing the old X-Mansion, even in shambles, along with Professor X and Magneto, made this trailer epic. That Cyclops scene is one I think is one of the best we've ever gotten from Marvel, and I think it's fantastic.
