An Ork Painted Like He Lives in GTA 6, Using Three Paints Plus Black and White

A Cryptic Cabin painting challenge took three weeks, a Vice City color scheme and some emergency nail polish

I have survived October again, and I very nearly didn't. Cryptic Cabin sent me a box at the back end of September, and the result is an Ork painted as though he lives in the world of GTA 6. I think he came out all right in the end.

I want to be transparent: it was hard, and it took me way longer than I care to admit. Painting this very tiny model took about three weeks. At one stage I considered messaging Cryptic Cabin to say, "I'm so sorry, but I can't do this."

The Cryptic Cabin challenge allowed three paints plus black and white

The box included some basing material, which I didn't end up using, though it was helpful. There was also a paintbrush. I have no idea where I've put it, but I did use it.

The rules: three paints, and you can only use those plus black and white. The base is at your discretion. My colors were blue or teal, red and green. I then panicked.

A GTA Vice City theme guided the color choices

I went, or tried to go, with the theme of GTA Vice City. For my own well-being, so the idea in my head could transfer to the Ork, I pulled up GTA 6 imagery on my tablet, including the poster, and kept it nearby.

My key tools were that artwork, propped up beside me, and a color wheel to try and make sure I'd made the right colors. I kept comparing the mix on my palette against both, and that's how we ended up with what we've ended up with.

Running out of black meant turning to nail polish

Because you can only use black and white beyond the three paints, I ran out of black and had to use nail polish. The secret's out. You can see the nail polish on my palette because it's shiny, but that splodge in the middle is what I was working with.

Photographing the Ork was its own problem

I don't post pictures of my miniatures and have no clue how people do the cool photo setup. I tried to mimic the Cryptic Cabin backdrop using a T-shirt and the Cryptic Cabin box itself. I also learned from a TikTok tip to turn the brightness all the way down, which is apparently what the pros do.

Why I think this Ork might be on to something

I found him difficult. I'm so used to edge highlighting marines that I kept thinking, "What do I do with this now?"

Still, I think the vision comes together, or at least I hope it does. I don't believe I've seen a GTA themed Ork yet, and I have been keeping an eye on social media, so we could be on to something, particularly with the game coming out so soon. He goes nicely with my Ork from last year. Despite a long and grueling process, he's not too shabby.
