11 Star Wars Storylines Disney Set Up and Then Abandoned, From Anakin's Lightsaber to Finn's Entire Arc
From Maz Kanata's locked away secret to Finn's stalled hero journey, these are the plot threads Lucasfilm teased across the sequel trilogy and its spinoffs and then never paid off.
Disney keeps insisting Star Wars has an entire galaxy of stories still waiting to be told. Nobody told them they actually have to finish the ones they already started, because over the last decade Lucasfilm has introduced mysteries, characters and entire corners of the galaxy only to abandon them the moment audiences got invested. Here are 11 of the biggest Star Wars stories that were set up and then left floating in space.
Number 11: Maz Kanata Locked Away Anakin Skywalker's Lightsaber and Never Explained How
The Force Awakens made the return of Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber feel incredibly important. It called to Rey, showed her visions, and somehow ended up locked inside Maz Kanata's basement. When Han asked her how she found it, Maz simply said, "That's a story for another time."
Ten years later, apparently that time still has not arrived. Disney built an entire mystery around the most famous lightsaber in Star Wars and then treated its explanation like a deleted scene nobody could ever find.
Number 10: The Knights of Ren Became Expensive Background Decoration
These warriors were teased as Kylo Ren's personal band of dark side fighters. They appeared in Rey's mysterious vision and immediately became some of the most interesting figures of the sequel era.
Then they vanished for an entire movie. They returned in The Rise of Skywalker, got destroyed by Ben Solo, and never spoke a single meaningful line.
Comics eventually supplied additional history, but the actual movies treated them like extremely expensive background decoration. That one was unfortunate.
Number 9: Finn's Force Sensitivity Was Teased for Three Movies and Never Paid Off
The Force Awakens gave Finn a lightsaber, showed him reacting to the destruction of Hosnian Prime, and positioned him as someone whose connection to the Force might actually be awakening.
The Rise of Skywalker confirmed it, with Finn sensing Rey and repeatedly trying to tell her something important. Then the movie ended without him ever saying it.
Star Wars spent three movies teasing a former Stormtrooper becoming Force sensitive and somehow decided that was less important than revealing who built C-3PO.
Number 8: Ahsoka Brought Ezra Bridger Home but Stranded Sabine in Another Galaxy
Rebels ended with Ahsoka and Sabine preparing to search for Ezra, creating one of the most exciting unresolved stories in modern Star Wars.
Ahsoka finally continued it, brought Ezra home, and then immediately stranded Ahsoka and Sabine in another galaxy.
We got the reunion everybody had been waiting for, but barely any emotional payoff. Ezra came back without Sabine, barely reacted, and the story quickly replaced one missing person mystery with another.
Number 7: The New Republic Rangers Show Vanished Before Explaining the First Order's Return
The Mandalorian introduced Carson Teva, New Republic pilots, Imperial remnants, and the idea that something dangerous was growing while the government ignored it.
Rangers of the New Republic was supposed to explore that entire side of the galaxy. Instead the series disappeared, leaving pieces of the story scattered across The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
The fall of the New Republic desperately needed that development, but Disney abandoned the show that could have delivered it.
Number 6: Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy Was Dismantled Within a Single Season
The Mandalorian ended its second season with Luke taking Grogu away for Jedi training. This should have opened the door to Luke building his academy, searching for students, and becoming the Jedi Master fans waited decades to see.
Instead The Book of Boba Fett gives a few training scenes before Grogu immediately chooses Mando and leaves. Disney finally gave Luke a student and then dismantled the entire idea before The Mandalorian even started its next season.
Number 5: Jannah's Stormtrooper Rebellion Was Reduced to Sequel Bait
The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Jannah and her entire company of Stormtroopers rejected their orders and escaped the First Order. That meant Finn was not the only isolated miracle, and something was awakening inside the First Order's own soldiers.
Finn could have inspired a full Stormtrooper rebellion. Instead she rode a space horse across a Star Destroyer, Lando asked where she came from, and the movie ended.
One of the sequel trilogy's strongest ideas was reduced to sequel bait that never actually received a sequel. That's crazy.
Number 4: Supreme Leader Snoke Died Before the Movies Explained Anything About Him
Snoke manipulated Ben Solo, rebuilt the Empire as the First Order, and somehow became one of the galaxy's most powerful dark side users. Then Kylo Ren killed him before the movies explained anything about him.
The next film showed copies of Snoke floating inside tanks and expected that image to answer every question.
Books and comics have added details, but the central movies never properly explored how this creature conquered the remnants of the Empire and corrupted the last Skywalker, how he was connected to Emperor Palpatine, or how Palpatine was actually him all along.
Number 3: The Acolyte Found Its Best Story in the Finale, Then Got Cancelled
The Acolyte spent most of its first season slowly circling the story audiences actually wanted.
Then in the finale it finally gave us Osha embracing the dark side, the stranger gaining an apprentice, Darth Plagueis watching from a cave, and the Jedi beginning to cover up what would eventually destroy them.
That was the show. Unfortunately it only discovered that show during the final episode. Disney canceled the series immediately after revealing its strongest story, leaving the most interesting material trapped inside a cliffhanger.
Number 2: Solo's Crimson Dawn Storyline Vanished After the Movie Underperformed
Solo ended with Qi'ra taking control of Crimson Dawn under Darth Maul while Han prepared to meet a gangster on Tatooine. That ending promised an entire underworld saga involving Maul, Qi'ra, Han, Chewbacca, Jabba, and possibly a young Boba Fett.
Instead the movie underperformed, Disney panicked, and the live action story vanished. Comics continued her journey, but the enormous cinematic promise of Emilia Clarke's character working for Darth Maul was never followed up.
Number 1: Finn's Entire Journey Never Became the Sequel Trilogy's Emotional Center
Finn began as a Stormtrooper who overcame lifelong conditioning and rejected the First Order. He should have become the emotional center of the sequel trilogy, the man who knew the enemy from within, liberated other Stormtroopers, and proved that nobody was beyond saving.
Instead The Last Jedi sent him on a pointless casino detour, and The Rise of Skywalker mostly had him shouting Rey's name.
Disney did not just abandon a subplot. It abandoned the most original character concept I think the sequels had.
That's the frustrating thing about Disney Star Wars for me. The problem was never a lack of good ideas, ideas are everywhere. The problem was that the moment one of those ideas required patience, planning or commitment, Lucasfilm jumped to the next announcement.
So which of these abandoned stories deserves to be finished first?
