11 Star Wars Characters Who Could Actually Kill Darth Vader

From Rey redirecting lightning to the one person who already did it, here is a rundown of who genuinely has a shot at taking down Darth Vader at his strongest.

Darth Vader hunted Jedi for a living. He walked through blaster fire, ripped ships out of the sky, and treated entire groups of trained fighters like they were barely an inconvenience. But he was not unbeatable. There are at least 11 Star Wars characters who could potentially kill Darth Vader, and a few of these picks are going to annoy plenty of Vader fans. I understand that.

The question here is not who would beat him every single time. It is who legitimately possesses the power, skill, or specific advantage needed to kill Vader at his strongest. Some of these are obvious, a few are extremely debatable, and the person at the very top of this list is the only one who ever truly destroyed Darth Vader.

Rey Skywalker could redirect Palpatine's lightning straight into Vader's suit

I am not saying Rey casually walks into a hallway, steals Vader's saber, and beats him before lunch. Prime Vader would probably overwhelm the Rey we saw through most of the sequel trilogy. He was stronger, more experienced, and far more ruthless. But the question is whether Rey could kill him, and the version of Rey we saw on Exegol absolutely had a chance.

When Rey connected with the strength of the Jedi who came before her, she resisted and redirected Palpatine's force lightning. That matters because electricity is one of the worst things you can throw at Darth Vader. His cybernetic body and his life support system make a massive lightning attack especially dangerous. Vader would dominate the physical portion of the fight, but if Rey reached that same level of power and redirected a full electrical attack into his suit, she could potentially shut the entire system down.

"Would I bet my house on it, on her beating Vader? Absolutely not," I have to admit. But under the right circumstances, she could do it.

Count Dooku's precision could target the machinery keeping Vader alive

Dooku is one of the most technically gifted lightsaber duelists in Star Wars history, and people constantly underrate him because Anakin eventually cut him down for good. Before that happened, Dooku repeatedly embarrassed Obi-Wan, fought Yoda without immediately being destroyed, and handled multiple Jedi while barely breaking a sweat.

Vader would have the advantage in raw strength and power, but Dooku would not stand directly in front of him trying to win a weightlifting contest. He would use footwork, timing, and precision to attack weak points in Vader's armor. Then there is Dooku's force lightning. Vader can survive electrical attacks, but his suit and damaged body make powerful lightning especially dangerous, and Dooku possesses one of the few abilities capable of bypassing Vader's physical strength to attack the machinery keeping him alive.

Vader would be the favorite, especially if he trapped Dooku in a close range fight. But Prime Dooku is skilled enough to create an opening, intelligent enough to recognize Vader's weaknesses, and definitely powerful enough to capitalize on them.

Mother Talzin's Nightsister magic follows rules Vader cannot block

This is probably the strangest matchup on this list, because Mother Talzin would not fight Vader like a Jedi or a Sith. Talzin used Nightsister magic to manipulate bodies, drain life, create physical warriors, and attack enemies from massive distances. She even targeted Dooku using a ritual performed on Dathomir while he was somewhere else entirely.

So how exactly does Vader defend himself against that? He could block a lightsaber. He could absorb blaster fire. He could overpower another force user. But Nightsister magic follows completely different rules, and Talzin was powerful enough to challenge some of the strongest Sith of her era. If Vader reached her physically, he would absolutely destroy her. The problem would be reaching her before she started attacking his already broken body through supernatural means he may not fully understand.

Talzin does not beat Vader by being stronger than him. She would beat him by refusing to play his game, which makes her one of the most dangerous wild cards on this entire list.

A Jedi's duel in a burning archive on Jedha nearly ended Vader for good

One Jedi did not theoretically come close to killing Darth Vader. We watched it happen. During their confrontation on Jedha, she fought Vader with the aggression and focus we had never seen from her. She cut through his defenses, damaged his armor, and eventually brought an entire burning archive crashing down on top of him.

Vader survived, of course, but he was buried underneath several tons of flaming debris, which I joked is apparently just how he gets going in the morning and stretches out. When the fight continued, she still pushed him to his limit. She came within inches of landing the killing strike, and Vader only survived because she missed it in the final moment.

That does not mean she was secretly stronger than Vader. Vader walked away, she did not. But she proved that with the right mindset and environment, she had the skill to create a legitimate opportunity. If her final attack had landed a few inches differently, Darth Vader's story ends inside that archive.

Ahsoka Tano knows Vader's fighting style well enough to break his mask

Ahsoka knows Vader in ways that most do not. She trained under Anakin. She understands his rhythm, his aggression, his instinctive reactions, because he helped build her fighting style. When they finally confronted each other on Malachor, she survived an extended duel and landed a strike powerful enough to break open his mask.

That moment also revealed Ahsoka's greatest advantage and her greatest weakness at once. Anakin was still inside Vader, and Ahsoka could reach the part of him buried beneath the armor, but that emotional connection might prevent her from delivering the final blow. She had an opportunity after damaging his mask, but when she heard Anakin's voice, she hesitated.

In a pure fight, Vader's strength and relentless pressure would probably eventually become overwhelming. But Ahsoka has the speed to avoid that, the skill to damage him, and the personal connection to destabilize him. If she entered that fight prepared to finish it, "I 100% think she could kill Vader." The real question is whether she could actually bring herself to do it.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is Vader's factory installed shutdown button

Vader is more powerful than Obi-Wan. He is physically stronger, more aggressive, and fueled by decades of pain and hate. Unfortunately for Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi is apparently his factory installed shutdown button. Obi-Wan defeated Anakin on Mustafar by exploiting his impatience and arrogance. Years later, when Vader believed he had finally surpassed his former master, Obi-Wan defeated him again and left his helmet split open.

Vader should beat him on paper, but Obi-Wan understands him too well. He knows Vader becomes reckless when he is angry, and he knows he can bait him into overcommitting. Most importantly, Obi-Wan is one of the few people capable of breaking Vader's concentration simply by being in the same room. Their second major duel proved Obi-Wan had the strength to damage Vader's breathing system and expose his face.

If Obi-Wan had chosen to finish him instead of walking away, Vader would have died right there. So honestly, Obi-Wan leaving him alive twice might be the biggest argument against him ever finishing the job at all.

Luke Skywalker already physically overpowered Vader once

Luke is one of the few characters who physically overpowered Vader on screen. During their final duel aboard the second Death Star, Vader threatened Leia, and Luke completely snapped, battering him backward before cutting off his hand. In that moment, Luke possessed the power and the opening needed to kill him.

Vader was conflicted. He did not truly want to destroy his son, and Luke was tapping into anger that brought him dangerously close to the dark side. But that emotional conflict is part of why Luke is such a dangerous opponent. Luke does not just fight Vader's armor, he fights Anakin underneath it. Vader could crush most Jedi without hesitation, but every time he looks at Luke he sees Padme, his past, and the life he destroyed.

Luke weakens Vader emotionally while possessing enough raw power to defeat him physically. If Luke had brought his lightsaber down instead of throwing it away, Darth Vader may have died before Palpatine ever left his chair.

Mace Windu already beat the man Vader used to be

I think a matchup between Mace Windu and Vader would be absolute violence. Mace was one of the greatest duelists of the Jedi Order and was uniquely effective against dark side opponents, which allowed him to confront an enemy's darkness without completely surrendering to his own. Vader has enough darkness to power a small planet.

Mace also has the physical strength to withstand Vader's aggressive style. He is not going to panic when Vader begins hammering away at his defenses, and he has already demonstrated he can survive against overwhelming dark side power. Most importantly, Mace defeated Palpatine in their lightsaber duel. People are still arguing about whether Palpatine threw that fight, and they are probably going to keep arguing until we run out of Skywalker saga to argue about. But the official story we were shown is that Mace disarmed him.

Vader would be stronger than the Anakin that Mace knew, but he would also be slower and far more dependent on intimidation. Mace is not going to be intimidated, if anything he is going to be annoyed that Anakin once again ignored every instruction anybody ever gave him. This fight could go either way, but Mace absolutely has the tools to kill Vader.

Yoda's speed could dismantle Vader piece by piece

Darth Vader's usual strategy is simple: overwhelm the opponent with strength, keep moving forward, and turn the fight into a battle of survival. That becomes much harder when your opponent is a two foot tall green blur with approximately 900 years of experience. Yoda's speed and acrobatics would force Vader to constantly adjust his footing on defense, and Vader's armor provides enormous strength but limits his mobility, which becomes a real problem against Yoda.

Yoda also possesses enough power in the force to prevent Vader from simply grabbing him and ending the fight. He absorbed and redirected force lightning, lifted enormous objects effortlessly, and fought both Dooku and Sidious at the height of their power. Vader would be extremely dangerous if he could corner Yoda and turn the duel into a close range slugfest, but actually trapping Yoda against the ropes would be hard.

Yoda has the knowledge, the speed, the patience, and the power to dismantle Vader piece by piece. He would not need to overpower him, he would let Vader's anger create the opening, to the point that Vader would not even realize he had made a mistake until the fight was already over. "I feel like Yoda would be like kryptonite to Vader, honestly."

Emperor Palpatine built Vader's chains and knows exactly where to pull them

Palpatine spent decades controlling Vader, and that control was not based entirely on manipulation. Vader knew exactly how dangerous his master was. Sidious was faster than he looked, enormously powerful in the Force, capable of producing lightning powerful enough to overwhelm Vader's life support systems. He also understood Vader's psychology better than anyone, knowing how to provoke him, how to punish him, and how to keep him trapped between rage and obedience.

Vader may possess greater raw potential, but much of that potential was lost after Mustafar. Palpatine remained the more complete force user and possessed the perfect ability for attacking Vader's physical weaknesses. That does not mean Vader cannot defeat him. Vader eventually did, but only by sacrificing himself, catching Palpatine from behind and accepting that the lightning would probably kill him too.

In a direct confrontation, Sidious would attack Vader's suit, breathing system, and damaged body, all while simultaneously tearing him apart psychologically. Vader might land one devastating strike if he closed the distance, but Palpatine would be the favorite. He built Vader's chains, and he knew exactly where to pull them.

Anakin Skywalker is the only person who ever truly killed Darth Vader

There is only one person in Star Wars who ever truly killed Darth Vader, and it was Anakin. Not Luke, not Obi-Wan, not Palpatine. For years, Vader insisted Anakin was dead. He treated Anakin like a weak person from another lifetime, because admitting Anakin still existed meant accepting everything Vader had done.

Luke did not physically destroy Vader. He forced Anakin to return. The moment Vader watched Palpatine torture his son and chose to save him, Anakin Skywalker took control again. He lifted Sidious, carried him toward the reactor shaft, and endured enough force lightning to destroy the machinery keeping his body alive. That decision killed Darth Vader before Anakin's body ever stopped breathing.

If we are talking about Anakin at his full theoretical potential, the chosen one who could have been more powerful than Yoda and Sidious, he also possessed the raw ability to defeat armored versions of himself in combat. Anakin was faster, more mobile, and less dependent on machinery, and he would understand every emotion driving Vader because they are the same person. But the real reason I think Anakin takes the top spot is that Darth Vader could survive Jedi armies, collapsing buildings, and decades of physical agony. The one thing he could not survive was Anakin finally choosing to come back.

So there you have it, 11 Star Wars characters who could kill Darth Vader, not necessarily beat him every single time, but each one with a legitimate path to taking him down. I did not put Darth Maul on this list, though I would like to see that debate play out too.

Which of these picks makes you angriest, Rey's spot on this list or Dooku's?
