Spider-Man: Brand New Day Reportedly Had Just One Post-Credit Scene, and an Insider Claims It Tied Into Avengers: Doomsday

An industry insider claim pointed to a single stinger connecting the film to Avengers: Doomsday, though the reasoning behind how that could work raised real questions.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day reportedly carried only one post-credit scene, and according to an industry insider, that scene tied directly into Avengers: Doomsday. That claim, and the questions it raised about how such a connection could actually work given who is and is not expected in Doomsday, is worth breaking down in full.

We had a major industry insider update regarding the post-credit scene, and we think we have a pretty good idea as to which one it turned out to be. There had already been rumors for a couple of different post-credit scene concepts, and this new update helped narrow things down, even if it did not answer every question.

The Insider Claim: Only One Post-Credit Scene Tied to Avengers: Doomsday

The update came from an industry insider who posted the following claim online: "Brand-new day only has one post-credit scene, and it sets up Avengers: Doomsday."

Right off the bat, I am almost a thousand percent certain that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is not in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Hulk, and a lot of the characters we were going to see in Brand New Day, including Jean Grey, were not going to be in Doomsday either. Those characters are almost certainly heading to Avengers: Secret Wars instead. So the first thing that made me curious about this claim is how it could set up Avengers: Doomsday if Peter Parker is not going to be in Avengers: Doomsday.

There was no way Marvel and Sony were going to miss the post-credit scene on Spider-Man: Brand New Day as one of the last opportunities to tie into Doomsday, especially with new footage having been added to the end of Avengers: Endgame to do exactly that. We always sort of suspected there would be some tie-in, but the insider claim alone did not explain how they planned on pulling it off.

Two Rumored Post-Credit Scenes and the Steve Rogers Mind-Wipe Theory

There had been two post-credit scenes heavily rumored over the previous couple of months, one more than the other, and that included the possibility of Steve Rogers making his way to the 616. The idea circulating was that Steve Rogers would be one of the only heroes who remembers Peter Parker, with the logic being that when Doctor Strange cast his mind-wipe spell at the end of No Way Home, it only affected the 616.

A lot of commenters had pushed back on that theory previously, pointing out that at the end of No Way Home there are other villains from across the multiverse seemingly ready to enter the 616, the same way the villains from both Tobey's and Andrew's universes did. I said I understood that logic, but I do not presume the mind-wipe spell affected other universes, specifically Andrew's or Tobey's, because that would mean they went home and no one remembered who they were, which I do not think was the implication of the film.

What I think the real point of the spell was was to reset everything to how it was before the spell was cast at the beginning of the movie, though I acknowledged there are blurred lines there, since everyone forgetting who Peter Parker was in the 616 was not exactly how things were before either. Working off the logic that the spell only affected the 616, Steve Rogers, presumably in a different timeline over on the 828 at the time, would not have had his mind wiped and could show up to recruit Spider-Man once he returns to the 616.

Why the Scene More Likely Showed an Impending Incursion Rather Than a Cameo

Even if that overlap between the post-credit scene and the start of Avengers: Doomsday made sense, I said Marvel and Sony may play it extremely coy, since they do not want to get the details wrong. The simplest way to handle it, in my view, would be to simply show an impending incursion rather than introducing Steve Rogers or reuniting him with Peter Parker, and certainly without giving away Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom face reveal that is presumably being saved for Avengers: Secret Wars.

My expectation was that the scene would show the space anomaly, the red sky, another Earth reaching into orbit, essentially showing us what an impending incursion looks like, without needing a crazy cameo introduction. Steve Rogers technically had not returned to the MCU yet at that point, and while he could appear in some new footage tied to the Avengers: Endgame re-release, his actual return to the MCU is happening in Avengers: Doomsday. There was no way, in my view, that Marvel was going to preempt that moment by having him show up in a post-credit scene, even in a movie as big as Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

I tried logically drawing this up every possible way to make it cooler, like actually showing us something with Doctor Doom or new footage, but that is being saved for Avengers: Endgame, since that is the main selling point for putting Endgame back in theaters. They were not going to preempt that reveal either. So more likely than not, the scene was something simple and surface level, which is also why there was only one post-credit scene rather than two.

My Overall Excitement Going In

If a simpler post-credit scene sounded disappointing, I said I understood that reaction, but the film itself proved to be one of the craziest Marvel movies and one of the craziest Spider-Man movies we had seen in a long time. I said I was more excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day than I expected to be, and more excited than I had been for a Marvel movie in a long time, which is saying something given the last one I felt that way about was Spider-Man: No Way Home.

I also raised an open question about whether the mind-wipe spell actually affected the entire multiverse rather than just the 616, since villains from other universes were shown entering the 616 at the end of No Way Home. I also floated a small chance that the Savage Hulk expected in Spider-Man: Brand New Day might remember Peter Parker as well, since it has already been established that Bruce Banner and the Hulk do not share the same memories.

Do you think the mind-wipe spell from No Way Home affected the entire multiverse, or only the 616?
