Star Trek Turned 60 and Paramount Gave Fans Nothing About Its Future

Six decades of television, 14 movies and more than 900 episodes later, the anniversary came and went without a single announcement of what comes next.

Star Trek turned 60 years old yesterday. That is 60 years of television, 14 movies, more than 900 episodes, and one of the most important science fiction franchises ever created. Paramount celebrated that milestone by telling us absolutely nothing about where Star Trek is going next. No new television series, no new movie, no road map at all. Nothing.

I want to be clear up front that this is not just a video where all I do is criticize Paramount over what happened with the 60th anniversary. There were celebrations, and some of them were genuinely good. The classic movies came back to theaters, which was awesome. There were fan events, special merchandise, a global Vulcan salute, Star Trek themed episodes of The Price Is Right and Let's Make a Deal, and a new season of the preschool series Star Trek: Scouts. That stuff is fine. That is stuff you could do at any point during the year to celebrate your love for Trek. But all of it celebrates where Trek has been. Nobody said a word about where Trek is going.

The 60th Anniversary Was the Easiest Chance to Announce Star Trek's Future, and Paramount Let It Pass

This was not some random Star Trek Day. This was the 60th anniversary, six decades, the one day when the entire entertainment industry was paying attention. News outlets covered it, actors did interviews, fans shared their favorite moments, and even casual viewers were reminded that Star Trek still exists. You will never have an easier opportunity to announce the future of Trek than that day, and they let the entire day come and go without giving us anything substantial. That is the biggest swing and a miss I can think of. Honestly, it was not even a swing.

The Franchise Is Sitting on a Void With Every Current Show Ending

The community desperately needed something right now. Strange New Worlds is heading into its fifth and final season. Lower Decks finished. Discovery finished. Picard finished. Starfleet Academy was supposed to help carry the franchise into a new era, but that did not work out. The era when Paramount had multiple Trek shows constantly releasing is over. Whether you liked every one of those shows or not, there was a period when Trek felt alive, when there was always another season coming, another trailer dropping, another cast announcement. Right now the future feels completely empty. It is a huge void.

That does not mean Paramount has nothing happening behind the scenes. I am sure meetings are taking place and ideas are being pitched. We reported that the person currently overseeing Trek is probably on the way out, and that they are reaching out to new writers to figure out the path forward. I am sure executives are trying to decide what this franchise should become under new leadership. But I picture a room full of suits who are not even Trek fans deciding what will make the most money. Fans should not have to sit around decoding rumors and corporate tea leaves on the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. Give us something.

They Did Not Need a Trailer, Just a Title

You did not need to show an entire trailer. You did not need a release date. You did not even need production to have begun. Put a Starfleet insignia on the screen, give us the title of a new series, and tell us Trek will continue. That alone would have completely changed the conversation.

Picture it: the anniversary celebration ends with the Enterprise D appearing on screen, followed by Seven of Nine sitting in the captain's chair of the Enterprise G, announcing a new series continuing the story after Picard season 3. The internet explodes and Star Trek immediately has momentum again. Or announce a brand new Enterprise series set further into the future with a completely fresh crew, a new captain, a return to exploring strange new worlds without being trapped inside another prequel.

The Fourth Kelvin Movie Has Become the Cinematic Version of Spock's Resurrection

Or they could finally announce a movie. It has been 10 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters, and since then we have heard about more Star Trek movie ideas than we have actual Star Trek movies. The fourth Kelvin movie has been alive, dead, alive, dead, revived, rewritten, delayed, and thrown back into development so many times that it has basically become the cinematic version of Spock's resurrection. At some point, either make it or move on. Give us Chris Pine and the crew for one final adventure. Give us the rumored origin movie. Give us something set after Picard. Give us Legacy. I do not care what direction they go. Give us something.

Trek Has Too Many Possibilities and Nobody Is Committing to One

The problem is not that Trek has no possibilities. That is silly. The problem is that Trek has too many possibilities and nobody appears willing to commit to one or knows what they are doing. The Enterprise G is ready to go. Characters from Deep Space Nine and Voyager could return. There is an enormous unexplored period after Picard. They could finally show us what happened to the Federation after the Dominion War in more detail. They could continue the story of the Borg after their defeat. They could explore the fallout from the Romulan supernova without using it as a background information tool. This universe is overflowing with potential, and instead we got a Big Bang Theory marathon.

I have talked before about Star Trek: United, which is actually set in the past rather than the future. Hypothetically we are supposed to be moving forward, but if that means getting political drama with a Starfleet captain turned president, give me that too.

Paramount Threw a Birthday Party Without a Present

The 60th anniversary should have been a statement. It should have been Paramount walking on stage and saying we understand what this franchise means, we understand where we lost our way, and here is our plan to fix it for the next 10 years. Instead it felt like they threw a birthday party without buying the birthday kid an actual present. We got the cake, we got the decorations, we looked through the old photo albums, and then we went home.

That silence is especially frustrating because Trek fans have remained loyal through all of it: canceled movies, unfinished stories, divisive shows, streaming reshuffles, and years of having no idea what was happening behind the scenes. This community will support good Trek. Picard season 3 proved it. Strange New Worlds proved it up to a point. Lower Decks proved it in a completely different way. Fans are not asking Paramount to recreate The Next Generation forever, and we are not asking for every show to be filled with cameos and nostalgia. We are asking for Trek to understand itself again: intelligent stories, exploration, a crew that feels like family, a captain who inspires people, dilemmas that do not have easy answers.

Why This Miss Bothers Me So Much

There has never been a better time for that. The real world feels more divided and more uncertain every day. Trek became special because it dared to imagine that humanity could eventually get its act together. We could use that reminder right now, that tomorrow can still be better than today. That is why this missed opportunity sits with me so hard. This was not just about a teaser trailer or a new logo on social media. This was a chance to tell millions of people that Trek has a future. Instead the 60th anniversary came and went and we are asking the exact same question we were asking before it started: what happens now?

Maybe Paramount announces something next week. Maybe there is a huge plan being prepared behind the scenes that I do not know about. Maybe this silence eventually makes sense, and I really hope it does. But that anniversary date only happened once. Star Trek will never celebrate its 60th anniversary again, and Paramount cannot get that moment back. You do not wait until after the candles have burned out to announce the future. So, happy 60th birthday, Trek. The fans showed up. It is just a shame we did not get to see what the future was.
