Arjun Reddy Part 1: Brandon and Vivian Take Up a Hyderabad Recommendation

We sat down with Arjun Reddy because people in Hyderabad told us to. Brandon had just come back from the city, where he held a small meetup, and one of the suggestions from the people he met there was this film. Many of them said it, so we thought, why not.

We got through the first part of the movie, and by the time we stopped we were only just getting started.

The college fight and Arjun's suspension

The early stretch at the college had us reacting out loud, especially once the match turned into a brawl. When Arjun was called to the dean, the point was that the other guy came and hit him first. "He did self-defense," came the point, and after the dean announced a one month suspension, the response was, "The guy punched him in the face though."

When Arjun was asked whether he could just write an apology and he refused, the reaction in the room was simple: "He's got his principles." When we heard the dean was in a parents meeting and he might have to wait two hours, the question came up: "How's he going to be a surgeon?"

Arjun's announcement to the first years

Arjun's announcement in Telugu to the new students, telling them to respect the girls, caught us off guard. At first it seemed that he was digging the teal one. The speech came across differently to us: "It sounded more like a warning." Watching him single out the new student in front of everyone, the reaction was, "I'd be so nervous."

The hazing scenes got a reaction too. There was an admission, "I didn't go to college cuz of the," and when asked if that was really why, the answer was, "I was afraid."

Small details that stuck with us

A few moments landed on a personal level. One moment brought back memories of coming back from India and finding that doing the same thing had become a habit. "It says so much without having to say anything," was how it was described, along with: "I kind of like it."

One classmate's line about pairing a good looking girl with a heavier friend drew a quick response: "that's terrible." The anatomy class scenes, where they keep drawing on each other, had us joking that we were slowly moving through the body parts.

Where we stopped

We ended part one with an injection into Arjun's leg and the story just warming up. "Oh, we're just getting started. We're getting into it," was where we left it, with part two still to come.
