The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Left Us Laughing and Then Completely Wrecked: My Verdict
Watching the HBO Max special with Michael Boo, I found the Janet Hubert and Will Smith reconciliation to be the emotional gut punch of the whole thing.
My overall take on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special, watched together with Michael Boo, is that it does exactly what a cast reunion should do. Before we even hit play, I said my first thought when I originally saw this was that it is what the Friends reunion should have been, confronting the real drama while also reminiscing, and going back through it with Michael only confirmed that.
The single strongest moment for us was the Janet Hubert segment. Will Smith says he could not celebrate 30 years without finding a way to celebrate the original Aunt Viv, and the special shows the two of them sitting down together for the first time in 27 years. Janet Hubert explains that during her pregnancy in season three the production offered her a deal covering two months and two weeks of work while barring her from working anywhere else, and she says, "I did not accept their offer. I was trapped. What could I do?" She describes being let go after that and says her own family told her she had ruined their name, adding, "I was hurt deeply." She also raises how being labeled a difficult Black woman in Hollywood functions almost like a professional death sentence. Will Smith apologizes on camera for blasting her publicly, and she apologizes back, and watching that exchange land, I said out loud that I hoped it was one hundred percent real, though I noted it does seem favorable in the edit.
Another detail that stuck with us was how James Avery mentored Will Smith through the emotional father-episode scene, whispering "Now that's acting" after Will nailed the take, which we both found genuinely moving given how much of a father figure Avery clearly was on set. We also got a kick out of the origin story, with Will Smith recounting how Quincy Jones basically steamrolled him into auditioning at his own birthday party after Benny Medina pitched the show based on his own life story.
My one real complaint is that the special cuts away from Janet Hubert right after the hug with the rest of the cast instead of letting her sit in on the group conversation, and as I put it, "It's never enough." I wanted to hear the rest of the cast react to her being back in the room. I also brought up how Fresh Prince is the rare Black sitcom of that era to survive an essential character being replaced, unlike Martin losing Tisha Campbell or Living Single losing TC Carson, both of which I felt wrecked those shows, while Fresh Prince kept going strong.
Do you think the on camera reconciliation between Will Smith and Janet Hubert was genuine, or just a well edited moment for the cameras?
