The Wayans Bros. Season 1 Verdict: Super Strong, Lovable and Not Afraid of Anything
Episodes 9 to 13 close out a short first season that wraps up cleanly, with a comforting world and a brotherly dynamic that keeps turning ordinary situations into crazy ones
We've reached the end of season one of The Wayans Bros., covering episodes 9 to 13. Our verdict is that it was a sweet little season: super strong, really fun and very lovable. We likened it to an appetizer, an amuse bouche for the show.
The Wayans Bros. wraps season one with no cliffhanger
It wasn't clear what to expect from the final episode. Maybe it would be something that led into a cliffhanger for season two. Instead, it's very much wrapped. Maybe they didn't know whether they would get a season two order. Even so, the finale was "super strong," and we agreed it was "very strong."
It raised the question of whether their budget will increase. As the show goes into its second season, it gets a lot more episodes. So maybe the network was giving it a little try with a short, half length run to see how people responded.
The humor doesn't hold back
It was cool because they didn't hold back at all. The serial killer jokes were wild. "They are not afraid of anything," and we agreed. There's also a lot to love in the jokes being part of their sense of humor, and in them laughing too.
Marlon and Shawn's dynamic makes the world comforting
The characters and the relationships are great. Put simply: "I want to be in this world all the time." "It's so comforting," came the reply. This feels like one of those shows you could just put on to chill and enjoy.
A lot of that comes from the dynamic between Marlon and Shawn. One is over the top silly and the other is more grounded. Whatever happens, an ordinary situation turns into a crazy one, but at least they have each other. In the finale, the older brother comes up with the plan, takes the cooler character and leaves the other to be a roach and take 20%. That hurts. On top of that, Marlon doesn't understand money because his dad has been tricking him and not even paying him minimum wage. For the past few episodes it has consistently felt like poor Marlon, and we want him to have a win.
Hopes for season two of The Wayans Bros.
Will season two bring storylines with more continuation or keep to standalone episodes? Either way is fine. The show seems pretty consistent because the brothers are always trying to get a better life through their jobs and careers and to impress their women. Pops' Diner will surely be just as strong.
We didn't see much of one of the female characters in the final two episodes. She's likeable, and hopefully we get more of her.
Would you rather season two of The Wayans Bros. lean into continuing storylines or stick with standalone episodes?
