Bad Lip Reading's Spider-Man Spoof Gets a Hilarious Reaction: Peter and Gwen's Nachos Fight Is Comedy Gold

I sat down with Steph Ciproff to watch Bad Lip Reading's take on The Amazing Spider-Man, and it did not disappoint. Going in, I admitted it had been years since I'd watched the actual movie, so this spoof basically worked as a recap for me.

The video reimagines Peter and Gwen's dialogue into an absurd exchange about nachos, menstrual cramps, tuna, and a freestyle rap about a wooden leg. My reaction to that bit in particular was pure delight. "The wooden leg, yeah the wooden leg is so good, yeah it's genius stuff," I said while watching it play out.

I Explained the Bad Lip Reading Creator's Origin Story

I shared some backstory I'd picked up about the anonymous creator behind Bad Lip Reading, saying his mother was deaf and skilled at reading lips, and that he tried to develop the same habit himself. According to what I described, whenever he attempted to read lips, absurd phrases would pop into his head, and that is literally how the channel started. He made the first video just for his friends, similar to how the South Park creators got their start, and it eventually got passed around until it blew up.

I called that origin story "such a cool origin story" and compared it to "a superhero power in a funny way." I speculated that the process likely involves watching the footage, writing down what the lips suggest, then going back to edit and finagle the dialogue into something coherent, even using shots where the mouth is not visible to make lines work.

My Verdict: I Want to See the Creator's Process and the "B Sides"

I compared the mysterious writing process to Conan O'Brien's stories about the Simpsons writers room, imagining it as unglamorous rather than a party atmosphere. I said I would love to see the creator's actual process of constructing these jokes, and admitted, "I want to see the b sides of this stuff," wondering how many good gems get left on the editing room floor because the creator judges his own material too harshly.

I also pointed viewers toward more of the channel's best work, specifically calling the NFL Bad Lip Reading videos gold and mentioning the Joe Biden "on the road" spoof as another standout. Steph confirmed she had already seen the NFL ones and enjoyed them.

What is the funniest Bad Lip Reading video you have ever seen, and did the wooden leg freestyle top it for you?
