Charlie Cox Reveals He and Andrew Garfield Sat Facing a Wall in a Restaurant to Hide Their Spider-Man Secret
A 90 second clip of Cox describing his sneaky text to Garfield and their disguised lunch in Atlanta has me imagining a Daredevil and Amazing Spider-Man crossover I'd genuinely love to see.
I came across a short clip, only about 90 seconds long, of Charlie Cox talking about the time he met up with Andrew Garfield while they were both secretly filming Spider-Man: No Way Home. As a huge fan of both Daredevil and Spider-Man, I figured this could either be really cool or a lot of nothing. Turns out it was pretty cool.
Charlie Cox says he sent Andrew Garfield a "cheeky text" about the rumors
In the clip, Cox explains that he and Garfield have been mates for years but had never worked together. He says, "I've known Andrew for years. Andrew and I have been mates for years... and we've never worked together." So when the rumors about No Way Home started swirling, Cox sent him a cheeky text saying, "If the rumors are to be believed, we're doing a movie together." According to Cox, Garfield played dumb at first, saying something like "I don't know what you're talking about." Cox pushed back, telling him, "Look, I know I know what you're doing and I'm doing it too, and we should hang out." Garfield then reportedly said, "But you're not in the script," which, as Cox points out, basically gave the game away since Garfield was implying he'd actually read a script with character names on it. Cox says he replied that obviously his scene just hadn't been added yet, but that he knew because he was in Atlanta too.
The pair sat facing a wall in an Atlanta restaurant to avoid being photographed together
From there, Cox says Garfield reacted with excitement, saying "Oh my god, this is so exciting," and the two met up for a walk that turned into lunch at a restaurant. Once they were seated, Cox says it hit them both that being photographed together in Atlanta would be a disaster for their promise to keep the movie secret. His solution was simple and, in his words, "quite funny": they both sat facing a wall so no one could snap a photo of them together. Cox says it was still pretty cool just to hang out with him and be in the same movie, even though, as he notes, they hadn't actually filmed a scene together at that point.
Why I think Garfield had it tougher than Cox when it came to keeping the secret
Watching this, I found myself thinking about just how much pressure Andrew Garfield was under to keep this under wraps, both before filming and all through the press tour for other movies. Charlie Cox didn't have nearly as much media exposure at that time, so he wasn't getting grilled about it the way Garfield was. This story also takes place before any of the No Way Home promotion had even started, since the movie hadn't been filmed yet, which makes Garfield's slip about the script even funnier to me. It seemed like it didn't take much effort for him to let the cat out of the bag with Cox specifically, but given how long they've been friends, that tracks. If anything, I think Cox let the secret out on his side first with that text.
I can't help wondering why they risked eating in public at all
Honestly, I kept asking myself why they didn't just meet somewhere private like a hotel instead of a restaurant where they could easily be spotted. It's also a little sad to me that these two are genuine friends who ended up in the same movie and still couldn't share a scene together, or even attend the premiere together, since Cox mentions that Tobey Maguire and Garfield weren't even in disguise at that event.
Could Daredevil and Garfield's Spider-Man cross over in the multiverse?
This got me thinking about whether, with the multiverse cracked wide open, there's a chance Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man and Charlie Cox's Daredevil could actually team up on screen someday. I'd love to see what that would look like. If Marvel ever does an Amazing Spider-Man 3, I've been curious about exploring Garfield's darker story, the one he referenced in No Way Home about losing the love of his life. I would love to see that fully explored, whether as a film or a series, watching him go through that ordeal.
Pairing Garfield's dark Spider-Man with the edgier Daredevil is a combination I'd love to see
I think it would be wild if Daredevil showed up in that storyline, because the Daredevil saga, at least the Netflix version, is definitely on the darker, edgier side. That makes him a great match for a version of Garfield's Spider-Man dealing with real trauma. I don't actually think this will happen, but I do think Marvel has to know fans would lose their minds if Daredevil and Amazing Spider-Man shared a movie or show, especially given how much love there already was for that brief Daredevil cameo in No Way Home. Full disclosure, Andrew Garfield is my favorite of the three live action Spider-Men. I know a lot of people are partial to Tobey as the original, but for me Garfield embodies Peter Parker best, and pairing his psychological exploration of grief and depression with a character like Daredevil, who's all about finding the good in people, feels like it could be a genuinely interesting character study, not just an action team up.
On Garfield's bisexual Spider-Man comment
I also brought up that Andrew Garfield has talked about wanting a bisexual Spider-Man, and that he'd floated Michael B. Jordan for that kind of story. Personally, I don't have any interest in a romantic pairing between those two characters, and I don't think most fans would either, but I said I wouldn't be opposed to it either. My real hope is simpler: I just want Daredevil and Garfield's Spider-Man in the same story, fighting side by side, whether that's Daredevil saving him physically or, more likely, emotionally and mentally. With the multiverse, I feel like Marvel could do almost anything and fans would watch, as long as it's something new and unexplored rather than a rehash. There's clearly a lot of love out there for both Charlie Cox and Andrew Garfield, and putting them in the same story together is something I would genuinely love to see.
Do you think Marvel will ever actually put Daredevil and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man in a story together, or is that crossover just wishful thinking?
