Why The Punisher's Return Is the Perfect Fit for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The pairing reflects Peter Parker's identity crisis after No Way Home, pulls from a rivalry dating back to Amazing Spider-Man #129, and may connect to Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

I love Jon Bernthal's Punisher, and I am ecstatic that he is officially back and fully within the MCU. He was great in Daredevil season 2, great across his own two seasons of his show, and I'm excited for his one-shot special too. But mostly I'm stoked to see The Punisher and Spider-Man on the big screen together, because the tonal clash between these two characters is so rich and layered.

Spider-Man is hopeful. He pulls his punches. He believes people can change. The Punisher believes in neither naps nor second chances. He ends problems permanently. On paper, it feels like these two characters couldn't even exist in the same movie because they are so starkly different. But that is exactly why it works. That is exactly why Punisher belongs in this movie.

Peter Parker has lost everything since Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Frank Castle is his warning sign

Right now in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker is in a very specific place in life. After No Way Home, Peter has lost everything. He has no friends, no support system, no one who even knows who he is anymore. Peter doesn't really even know who he is anymore. For the first time, being Spider-Man isn't just part of Peter's life. It is Peter's life.

That's where Frank comes in. Frank is what happens when you let the mask completely take over. He doesn't wear a mask, but when you let the alter ego, the superhero or vigilante persona, completely take over with no balance, there is no Frank Castle anymore. There is only the Punisher.

That's the whole point of this pairing, I think. Peter is at a crossroads: does he try to rediscover Peter Parker and reintroduce himself to the world, or does he just fully embrace and become one hundred percent Spider-Man? Frank Castle is the answer to that question taken to the absolute extreme. He's not just a team-up character. He is a warning signal for Peter Parker.

This rivalry goes back to Amazing Spider-Man #129, where Punisher was first introduced

This dynamic isn't anything new. It goes all the way back to Amazing Spider-Man 129, where the Punisher was first introduced. Even back then, the tension between these two was baked into the story. Punisher looks at Spider-Man and judges him as weak for not going that extra step. Spider-Man looks at Punisher and thinks the same thing in reverse, because Frank does go that extra step.

Same city, same mission, but completely different philosophies. So bringing that dynamic into a story where Peter is at his lowest point is not random. That's pulling directly from the DNA of these characters and from the comics.

Punisher could be a more important mentor to Peter than Tony Stark, Fury, or Strange ever were

We're all tired of Peter needing to learn lessons from MCU mentors like Tony, like Fury, like Strange. Punisher will arguably be the most influential character, because inside that hard, brutal shell is a man who knows what he is. I think he'll be able to guide Peter into not becoming like him, the way he's done something similar with Matt Murdock's Daredevil.

Frank can tell Peter that in order for there to be light, which is Spider-Man, there has to be that darkness that is Punisher. Punisher can never be the hero that gives the city hope, but Spider-Man can be. It kind of takes me back to The Dark Knight, when Batman was the hero but could never be viewed as the hero, and Gotham needed a different kind of symbol instead. That's what we're seeing here with Punisher.

He knows he's the one who has to get down in the trenches and do the hard, dirty work so characters like Spider-Man and Daredevil can maintain what it means to be a superhero rather than a more violent, ruthless vigilante. Punisher needs heroes like Spider-Man to be able to do what he does, and for Spider-Man to do what he does, he has to have Peter Parker. Frank Castle, the part of him that used to exist, is gone, and he's fully aware of that. He knows he's never going back, but he can show Peter that isn't the path to take. On the flip side, Peter can see how Bruce Banner went the path of not embracing his other half but burying it instead, and that isn't the perfect answer either. Peter needs to find the balance where both Peter and Spider-Man coexist.

Punisher's MCU return followed a messy rights history, and Bernthal reportedly turned down an earlier, softer version

Let's zoom out, because this isn't just a story decision, it's also very much a corporate one. The Punisher's rights reverted back to Marvel from 20th Century Fox around fifteen years ago, and the character then got tied up in the Marvel Netflix deal. Once those rights issues cleared, after the Netflix shows were canceled and brought into the MCU, Marvel planned a soft reboot of that Netflix world with some cast staying and others being recast, before pivoting to embrace those shows as full MCU canon, which I think was the right decision.

If I'm remembering this reporting correctly, Bernthal was approached before that pivot to play a different, softer version of the Punisher, and he declined, believing Marvel was softening the character too much. That changed once Marvel pivoted back to the old style and fully embraced it, which is the version we're getting now.

Spider-Man, meanwhile, is still a Sony Pictures property. The movie rights belong to Sony, and part of their deal with Marvel is that they get to use MCU characters in their Spider-Man movies, which we've already seen with Tony Stark, Nick Fury, and Doctor Strange. In Brand New Day we're getting Bruce Banner's Hulk alongside the Punisher.

The Brand New Day trailer treats Punisher like he already belongs, unlike Bruce Banner's cameo appearance

What's funny is that Bruce Banner feels more like the cameo in this movie, while Punisher just feels like he's supposed to be there. The trailer even shows Bruce Banner not remembering Peter Parker, while Punisher and Spider-Man seem to know each other well, as if they've had many run-ins since we last saw them both. They're establishing that history without a big introduction scene, just a brief interaction that tells us these two characters already know each other.

I'm glad they're going that route. It serves the story, and it also serves as the scratching of the itch Sony requires to let Spider-Man appear in Avengers movies, since they want MCU characters in their Spider-Man movies too. So while Punisher showing up in Brand New Day is totally a product of corporate synergy, it's also a genuinely great addition, and I can't think of a better character to serve as Peter's mirror at this weird time in his life where he's lost everyone including himself. I think we're primed for some really emotional exchanges between these two as well as some comedy, and if they recreate that comic panel of Punisher carrying an injured Spider-Man, I'm fully on board.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 could set up Matt Murdock as the link between Peter Parker and Frank Castle

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premiered on 24 March 2026, and in that season we're very likely going to see Kingpin's mayor era end. As I theorized in a separate piece for ScreenCrush, I think Fisk and Matt might both end up in prison, Fisk for obvious reasons, and Matt because he insists on being prosecuted, pleads guilty, represents himself at trial, and gives a speech to the jury about penance, citing his Catholic roots and his earlier conversations with his priest, ultimately getting convicted.

Spider-Man and Matt already know each other. Matt doesn't remember who Peter Parker is, but he does remember that he was Spider-Man's lawyer. With Matt's identity as Daredevil likely revealed in season 2, once Peter learns that, he could visit his old lawyer in prison, reveal that he's Spider-Man, and explain everything that happened in No Way Home. Matt would know Peter is telling the truth because he can tell when people are lying.

I think Matt may end up being the one to tell Peter and Frank Castle to find each other on the outside and keep an eye out for one another in this brand new day of superheroing after the war we saw in Born Again season 2. That's another reason Punisher is in this movie, to serve as the glue between these projects and give the MCU the interconnectivity that has quite frankly been lacking lately in this saga.

Do you think Daredevil ends up being the one who brings Spider-Man and Punisher together on the outside?
