Chimpanzee vs Wolf: Can the Chimp's Grip Beat the Wolf's Jaws?
Chimps are not as strong as the internet claims, and getting hold of a wolf means putting their hands right next to its mouth.
A chimpanzee versus a wolf: who wins? First things first, forget basically everything the internet has told you about chimpanzee strength.
Chimpanzee strength is closer to one and a half times a human's, not eight times
You'll hear that chimps are five, six, sometimes even eight times stronger than a human. The truth is they're not. Actual research suggests that their muscles are closer to around one and a half times ours pound for pound, which is "still insanely strong, don't get me wrong."
That strength matters even more when you combine it with their long arms, their huge hands, their powerful jaws, and the fact that chimpanzees can get incredibly violent.
The chimpanzee's hands are probably its biggest advantage against the wolf
Against the wolf, those hands are probably the chimp's biggest advantage. The wolf and the chimp are pretty similar in weight, but only one of them can grab the other one. If the chimp gets both its hands around the wolf's neck, grabs one of its legs, or manages to pin it, I really like the chimp's chances.
Chimps fight by grabbing, biting, pounding and pulling. There are documented attacks where they've caused absolutely horrific injuries to other chimpanzees.
Grabbing a wolf puts the chimp's hands right next to its jaws
The problem is that getting hands on the wolf means putting those hands right next to the wolf's mouth. That is not a good idea. While chimps do hunt other animals, they're mostly hunting smaller prey like monkeys, and they very often hunt together.
The wolf's entire body is designed around chasing down large mammals, getting its jaws onto them, and doing enough damage to bring them down. Unlike the chimp, the wolf doesn't need to wrestle its opponent down before it can use those jaws, which are its best weapon.
Chimps are dangerous, but big dogs have been used by poachers to hunt them, and they're hunted by cats like jaguars. "It's really hard to overlook the wolf's predatory instinct and just the fact that it was literally made for this."
Do you think the chimp could get a grip before the wolf's jaws find their mark, or does the wolf's predatory design win out?
