Worthy Captain America vs Vision: Why Mjolnir's Lightning Hands Steve Rogers the Win

Vision's phasing and the Mind Stone make him dangerous, but electric attacks may be his weak spot, and a worthy Cap wields plenty of them.

In a battle arena showdown between a worthy Captain America and the Android Avenger, Vision, I think Steve Rogers comes out on top. He is stronger, he is the better fighter, and the lightning he channels through Mjolnir looks like the kind of attack Vision's phasing cannot save him from.

Steve Rogers is Captain America: the first Avenger, the leader of the Avengers, the pinnacle of human potential, and, more important than all of that, a good man. Because of that, during Avengers: Endgame, Cap was able to pick up Mjolnir, proving he was worthy to wield the hammer, and went on to fight Thanos himself. Vision came from Ultron's attempt to create his perfect body, empowered by the Mind Stone. Instead of Ultron entering that body, Jarvis did. Throw in a little Tony, a little Bruce and a little bit of Thor's lightning, and Vision was born.

I think Captain America is stronger than Vision, judging by his fights with Cull Obsidian and Thanos

The first thing I want to look at is strength and physicality. Even before he wielded Mjolnir, Steve was strong enough to hold back a helicopter and lift a massive steel beam while injured. He momentarily held back Thanos during Infinity War, and slightly staggered Thanos with his shield during Endgame.

Then he got Mjolnir and gained the powers of Thor. From there he was able to stagger an injured Thanos with throws from the hammer, sending him reeling. When Thor was trying to stab Thanos with Stormbreaker, Steve jumped in to help, though honestly he was not able to do too much there. What is so impressive, though, is when Cap knocked away Cull Obsidian with a throw from Mjolnir. In that same movie and that same battle, Cull Obsidian was able to backhand Iron Man and have Tony at his mercy. Yet Steve sent him flying with one hit.

Vision has his own feats. He effortlessly overpowered Hawkeye, ripped Ultron bots apart, crushed one with the palm of his hand in a mighty blow, and caused Giant Man to lose his footing and stumble backwards. All in all, though, I think Captain America is stronger. From the way he matched up against Cull Obsidian and the way he fought Thanos, I am going to say Steve is the stronger of the two.

Vision's durability is more consistent than Cap's

Durability is where Captain America looks a little suspect, or rather, his durability just is not consistently on the same level as Vision's. With Mjolnir, and presumably with the power of Thor, he took some high powered punches from Thanos and was sent flying backwards. Even without Mjolnir, he took a hit from Thanos and was launched through a rock, although his shield blocked a lot of the initial impact.

However, when Thor and Cap teamed up on Thanos, Thanos knocked Steve out with just one punch. It is not really clear whether he had access to Mjolnir or the powers of Thor at the time.

Vision, on the other hand, was blasted into a wall by Ultron, took Hawkeye's electrical arrows, and survived being fired through multiple floors and shot deep into the earth by Wanda. He has even jumped in front of a bus, and the bus split right in two on impact just from hitting him. As for speed, it is not really an important factor here. Neither of them is so fast that they cannot tag the other.

Vision's phasing and the Mind Stone could decide the fight

What I think this fight really comes down to is Vision's phasing ability and his Mind Stone, how those stack up against Captain America, whether Cap can overcome them, and how Mjolnir comes into play.

Vision can walk through walls, and he has flown straight through Giant Man. In his battle against Hawkeye he really showed his phasing in combat, consistently phasing through all of Clint's attacks. He has stuck his arm through an Ultron bot, torn one apart, and stuck his hands through Ultron's vibranium head. In theory, Vision could place his hand right through Captain America's chest, or even straight through Cap's head. We have never seen Vision use his powers with lethal intent, but that is completely possible.

Then there is the Mind Stone. Vision has cut through an airport tower like it was nothing, blown up Ultron bots, and even melted Ultron's vibranium body with the help of Iron Man and Thor. This is an Infinity Stone he is blasting people with. "It packs a punch."

Steve Rogers is the better fighter, and Mjolnir makes him even more dangerous

It is not a hard argument to make that Steve is the more technical and skilled fighter. He has taken down an elevator full of highly trained operatives, swiftly defeated multiple people, cleared whole rooms, and routinely takes opponents out with one shot. He has fought multiple skilled fighters at once, battling War Machine and Black Panther by himself, and he has routinely gone up against powerful and skilled opponents including Winter Soldier, Iron Man, Black Panther, Crossbones and Corvus Glaive. The fighting skill obviously has to go to Cap.

And this is Cap with Mjolnir. Steve put up an incredible fight against Thanos, better than Thor and arguably better than Captain Marvel. The only one who definitely put up a better fight was Scarlet Witch. He seamlessly and instantly mastered using Mjolnir and his shield in combination, and even instantly figured out how to manipulate lightning.

Mjolnir alone is an incredibly powerful weapon. Even though this is the hammer from 2013, and we cannot use any feats from awakened Thor, it was still able to destroy the Bifrost Bridge, generate enough lightning to bring down the Chitauri, and fly incredibly fast. Granted, Thor did all of those things, but Captain America has the powers of Thor, so he should presumably be able to do the same.

Without Mjolnir, I see no way Captain America beats Vision

Both of these heroes have a lot going for them, but they also have some things going against them. Take a closer look at Cap's fight against Thanos. Steve got off to an incredible start and had Thanos on the ropes, but a lot of that was because he caught Thanos off guard. Thanos definitely was not expecting Steve to wield Mjolnir. Once Thanos recovered, he flipped the script, knocked Mjolnir out of Steve's hand and broke his shield. Later on, Thanos even knocked Cap out with just one punch.

If Vision is able to take Mjolnir away from Steve, then he is not fighting a worthy Cap equipped with the powers of Thor, just normal Captain America. That version could still be a real problem, because Cap has done well against people way outside his weight class, but "I really don't see any way that Vision doesn't win that fight."

Hawkeye's electric arrows suggest Vision may be vulnerable to electric attacks

So how in the world is Cap going to counter Vision's phasing? For that, look at Hawkeye. When Clint was trying to take Wanda out of Avengers headquarters, he launched two electric arrows and caught Vision in a restraining electrical field. It held Vision for a good little while, and apparently Vision could not phase his way out of it. He had to destroy the arrow with a blast.

What that suggests is that some kinds of energy attacks can hurt or restrain Vision, and phasing cannot save him. Electric attacks in particular seem to do pretty well. And who is throwing lightning bolts around all over the place? Captain America.

I think it is a whole lot more likely that Cap injures Vision with his lightning than that Vision somehow takes Mjolnir away from Steve. Vision could try to knock the hammer out of his hand, but Steve can always recall it, and Steve has shown better control and mastery over the hammer than Vision. I am not even sure Vision technically lifted it. I think it is more like the elevator conundrum.

Worthy Captain America wins the battle against Vision

All that being said, I think worthy Captain America comes out on top. He is stronger, he is a better fighter, and he has fought Thanos before. Vision's phasing might be a problem, but Cap is throwing around electric attacks, which Vision is weak to, and I am sure that would come in handy. I have to give this one to Steve. Captain America wins.

Who do you think wins this fight, Vision or Captain America, and do you think Vision actually lifted Mjolnir?
