Why Vision Beats Red Tornado in a Clash of Android Heroes
Both were built as weapons and became heroes, but Vision's strength and intangibility give him the simpler road to victory against Red Tornado
Vision versus Red Tornado pits two of the most powerful robot heroes in comics against each other, and when I break it down, Vision wins. Both are androids who were created to be villains, only to turn out to be some of the greatest Avengers and Justice League members the world has ever seen.
Right off the bat, these two are actually pretty similar. They're both incredibly powerful androids, both have served on some of the most powerful superhero teams in their universes, and both are a whole lot more dangerous than you might think at first glance. Before I get to who wins, here's what each of them brings to the fight.
Red Tornado was built to destroy the Justice Society, then found a consciousness
Even though Red Tornado is a hero, and even a Justice League member, he was actually created to destroy superheroes. A supervillain named T. O. Morrow built him to infiltrate the Justice Society, gain their trust, and eventually kill them. Yet somehow, Red Tornado found a consciousness. That same robot ended up becoming one of the most loyal members of the Justice League.
Here's where things get interesting. This Red Tornado isn't actually just a robot. His body is inhabited by an ancient air elemental, a living whirlwind who was once a villain himself. So you've basically got an incredibly powerful elemental being inside one of the most advanced android bodies in comics. That's what Red Tornado is, and that's why he's actually way more powerful than you'd think.
Red Tornado's wind control has held back Despero and created winds Amazo couldn't overpower
When you're talking about Red Tornado, you have to start with the wind manipulation, because he can do a whole lot more than just create tornadoes. He has almost complete control over the air itself. He can generate massive hurricanes, manipulate atmospheric pressure, create barriers of wind, and unleash air blasts powerful enough to send superhumans flying. He's generated tornadoes with winds exceeding 700 mph, created lightning storms, and even produced tornadoes in space.
When Red Tornado actually lets loose, he's held back Despero briefly and taken down whole supervillain teams. He's literally torn Solomon Grundy apart with his wind, and he's created winds powerful enough that even Amazo couldn't overpower them, even while using the powers of multiple Justice League members. That's pretty remarkable considering Amazo can copy powers like Superman's and Wonder Woman's.
Basically, Red Tornado doesn't have to physically beat you in a fight. Not when he can surround you with a tornado, throw you around the room, or control the very air you breathe, all with a thought.
Red Tornado keeps coming back, even after his body is destroyed
That's not all Red Tornado can do. He's incredibly strong, very tough, and ridiculously difficult to kill. He has survived attacks from the likes of Superman and Despero. He's been blasted apart, torn to pieces, and completely dismantled, and yet somehow he still just keeps on coming back. He's even got nanotech that allows him to regenerate and heal in an instant, reconstructing his body after it's damaged in a fight.
On top of that, destroying Red Tornado's body completely isn't enough to kill him. Remember, Red Tornado isn't just an AI inside of a machine. He's also the consciousness of an actual elemental being, with that consciousness existing as a living force of nature. So you can destroy his body, and not even that is enough to actually kill him.
Then there's Red Tornado's intelligence. He's basically a walking supercomputer, capable of processing enormous amounts of information in an instant, analyzing opponents, figuring out the perfect way to beat them, and performing calculations way beyond what any normal person can do. Put it all together and you have an ancient elemental being capable of creating hurricanes and overpowering Justice League level opponents, combined with the intelligence of an incredibly advanced supercomputer. Despite being created to destroy heroes, he's ended up becoming one of the most loyal and compassionate heroes in the entire DC universe.
Vision was created by Ultron as a weapon against the Avengers
Vision was created by Ultron not as a savior, but as a weapon. He's a synthezoid made from the body of the original Human Torch, infused with the brain patterns of Wonder Man, and empowered by the energy of a solar gem. His purpose was simple: infiltrate the Avengers, destroy them from within, and help Ultron wipe humanity off the map.
But something unexpected happened. In the cold logic of programming, a spark of life ignited, something Ultron couldn't predict or replicate. Vision didn't just think, he felt. He defied his creator, stood against his code, and chose his own path. From that day forward, the weapon became a man and the man became a hero.
Physically, Vision is an engineering miracle. His body is composed of vibranium and complex solar polymers designed to harness and store sunlight as his primary energy source. The gem on his forehead is more than decoration. It's his heart and his power core. Every photon absorbed fuels him, strengthening his body, amplifying his energy, and charging his solar beams, blasts that can melt reinforced armor and stagger gods.
Vision's density control let him phase a hand through Hyperion's chest
Vision's most terrifying ability is what made him Ultron's masterpiece: molecular density manipulation. Vision can control every atom of his body, shifting between intangibility and immovable density. At his lightest, he's untouchable, phasing through walls, armor, or even attacks themselves. At his heaviest, he hits with seismic force, turning his fists into weapons capable of cratering cities.
He's used this power to drop from the sky at full mass, knocking out Count Nefaria and triggering earthquakes hundreds of miles away. Against Hyperion, Marvel's version of Superman, Vision didn't just survive, he humbled him. He phased a hand through Hyperion's chest mid fight, bypassing invulnerability itself. Hyperion called him the only being ever to do it, and the only one who ever would again.
Vision has gone toe to toe with the Silver Surfer
Vision's strength is equally absurd. He's flown through Sentinels as if they were paper, overpowered Ultron multiple times, and matched Wonder Man blow for blow. He's a being who can trade hits with Thor and the Hulk. He's stomped a Phoenix empowered Namor, resisted the cosmic flames of the Phoenix Force twice, and even freed War Machine from its grip, something that borders on impossible given the Phoenix represents all life, death, and rebirth in the cosmos.
Then there's the Silver Surfer fight, perhaps Vision's most telling feat. The Surfer, a being empowered by the Power Cosmic and capable of resurrecting the dead, manipulating matter, and warping spacetime, found himself struggling against Vision's strength. The Surfer even admitted that Vision's "power is nearly comparable to my own." Vision almost won, forcing the Surfer to resort to his board's thought control just to escape. For a moment, an android built in a lab stood toe to toe with one of Marvel's most powerful cosmic entities.
Vision has tanked the Phoenix Force and soloed a team of Avengers
In durability, Vision is nearly unmatched. He's tanked repulsor blasts from Iron Man, hits from Thor, punches from Wonder Man, and even a full charge blast from the Phoenix Force itself without flinching. He has taken direct impacts from Hyperion and shrugged off explosions that would level cities. His vibranium structure absorbs and redistributes energy, allowing him to survive attacks that would disintegrate almost anyone.
Even the Hulk's fury couldn't touch him. Vision phased through every punch, calmly lecturing the Hulk mid battle. He's defeated entire teams of Avengers, soloing Beast, Captain Marvel, Medusa, Falcon, and Nova all at once. He's caught Nova mid flight and hurled him like a projectile. He's faced Goliath and stopped a 100 ton punch with one hand. Vision doesn't just overpower opponents. He outthinks, outpaces, and outmaneuvers them, with every strike and counter calculated at computer speed.
Sunlight powers Vision, and he's theoretically limited only by his ethics
When Vision is fueled by direct sunlight or even artificial solar radiation, his output multiplies exponentially. Black Panther once directly charged Vision with a solar emitter, amplifying his power far beyond baseline levels. As long as there's light, Vision endures.
His evolution isn't just physical, either. Vision learns, adapts, and upgrades himself constantly. As technology evolves, so does he, and each iteration makes him faster, stronger, and more efficient. He's theoretically limitless, constrained only by his own ethics. If he ever abandoned restraint, Vision could surpass nearly every Avenger alive.
For all his power, though, Vision's greatest struggle is against himself. He's a man built to mimic humanity, yet the more human he becomes, the more he feels pain, loss, and doubt. He's loved and lost Wanda Maximoff, built a family, and watched it dissolve before his eyes. He's been dismantled, rebooted, and erased, and every time he finds a way back, not because he's unkillable, but because he refuses to stop being alive.
I give Vision the clear edge in strength
Starting with strength, I do have to give the edge to Vision. Red Tornado is definitely superhumanly strong, and he does have a robot body, but it's really nothing compared to Vision. Most of Red Tornado's power comes from air manipulation, while Vision is actually one of the physically strongest heroes on Earth. He's fought against Wonder Man, Thor, and Ultron, and even fought the Silver Surfer.
These two really aren't even close to being in the same ballpark when it comes to strength. Considering that Vision can change his molecular density, actually making himself heavier and stronger, I think there's an argument that Vision is closer to the likes of Superman or Hulk when it comes to strength than he is to Red Tornado. That's how big the gap is between the two.
But just because Red Tornado's thing isn't overwhelming strength doesn't mean he doesn't have some seriously powerful attacks. He's countered a tornado moving over 700 miles per hour and created F5 level tornadoes and hurricanes even while weakened. He's created tornadoes powerful enough to throw around both Thor and Vision in a crossover, and he's used his powers to take down members of the Crime Syndicate. He's held back Despero, a Justice League level threat, and created winds so powerful that Amazo, with all the powers of the Justice League, could not overcome them.
Vision's intangibility is probably the most important power in this fight
All of this brings us to probably the most important power in the fight: Vision's intangibility. The truth is, Vision doesn't actually have to withstand Red Tornado's attacks. He can simply alter his density and allow any and all attacks to pass straight through him.
Vision can also use that power offensively. He's able to phase directly through somebody, then partially solidify himself inside, causing some serious pain. Considering this attack has worked on Hyperion before, it can definitely work on Red Tornado too, at least on his physical body. Here's the problem: Red Tornado isn't just a robot, he's also an air elemental. Even though his body has been destroyed, dismantled, torn apart, and put back together, Red Tornado still endures. Basically, both robots are seriously difficult to injure, and both are nearly impossible to put down for good.
Red Tornado can win, but Vision has the simpler road to victory
Here's the bottom line. Red Tornado has the power to beat Vision. He's even managed to knock Vision around during a JLA and Avengers crossover. He can keep Vision at a distance and control the entire battlefield, and if he does manage to catch Vision at a moment when he's solid, his winds might just be powerful enough to rip the synthezoid apart.
But Vision has a much simpler road to victory. He's physically a whole lot stronger and tougher. He can make sure attacks don't touch him with his intangibility, then use that same power to completely bypass Red Tornado's durability. I think Red Tornado would survive: the elemental would live on, and he would pop back up in a different body sometime later. But there's a difference between simply surviving a fight and still being able to keep fighting in that same fight.
Vision has a much simpler road to win. He's ultimately more powerful, and he can "absolutely mess Red Tornado up" when he lets loose. Vision wins.
