Avengers Doomsday X-Men Leak: Scoopster Says Mutants Have Survived Countless Incursions
New claims about the X-Men timeline in the upcoming Avengers crossover suggest a much bigger multiversal story than fans had assumed, though none of it is confirmed.
There has been a ton of conjecture surrounding the X-Men timeline that has now been shown in one of the preview trailers for Avengers: Doomsday, and I want to say upfront that some of the assumptions made here about this being the original Fox X-Men universe, the same changed one Deadpool and Wolverine returned to and presumably the same one Monica Rambeau was last seen in, may end up being wrong. New details have come from a Twitter scoopster that go a lot further than just the X-Men fighting the Avengers or Doom on the lawn of the mansion, and the scoop seems corroborated by a detail already heard from a trusted industry insider source.
A Twitter scoopster claims the X-Men have survived countless incursions and are 'exhausted, broken'
The scoopster is a source not covered in a while, someone who has been around for a long time and has a track record, so it is given more reverence than anonymous posts on Reddit or 4chan, though as always it should be taken as it is. According to her, quote, "The X-Men in Avengers Doomsday have survived countless incursions, each one nearly wiping out their universe. They're exhausted, broken, and have sacrificed everything. Every incursion forces them to send their members to another Earth to battle its defenders and erase that universe from existence before it destroys theirs."
In and of itself, that is a pretty awesome update, and it seems reasonable to imagine Marvel Studios will show the X-Men having been doing this for quite some time. That context lines up with an earlier scoop: there are rumors that the opening scene of Avengers: Doomsday is Wolverine fighting against Tobey Maguire, which would be the X-Men universe fighting against Tobey's universe. There have also been reports that Tobey's universe might be wiped out, and that scene may be the first of many battles shown with the X-Men fighting other timelines.
The Magneto 'New Jersey' theory suggests the X-Men might be traveling to the 616, not the other way around
If the X-Men are sending their defenders to other Earths during these incursions, that would imply they might be sending them to the 616. That is where a theory comes in: when Magneto said he destroyed New Jersey, it may have been by flooding it, which could explain why the ocean beds appear empty during the Wakanda preview trailer. That theory would mean the X-Men may be traveling to the 616 instead of the 616 heroes traveling to them.
It had seemed like a safe assumption that the battle shown outside the X-Mansion in front of Sentinels was taking place in the X-Men timeline, with the 616 heroes traveling there. Now it looks like that may not be the case, and the battle could instead happen on the 616 itself, which would be a pretty steady departure from a lot of what had already been heard in plot leaks and from a lot of the assumptions already made about how the film's structure would work.
Multiple sources now say the X-Men world is not the old Fox 10,005 timeline but a new, comic-accurate one
There had been an assumption that the Fox X-Men presented in Doomsday would be the 10,005 universe, the old Fox timeline somewhat cleaned up with new heroes like Binary seen in a post-credit scene, with Deadpool and Wolverine also part of that universe. Some of that may still be true in some form, but it now looks doubtful that it is the 10,005. Multiple sources are now saying this isn't the 10,005 universe at all, but a brand new, more comic-accurate X-Men timeline that would free the franchise from Fox continuity while keeping some of the same actors in different roles within a different setup.
There have also been reports that this could be more of a Utopia timeline, where Magneto has mutants and humanity living in peaceful coexistence, though it remains to be seen whether any of that is true. There isn't likely to be enough time in the film to explore multiple X-Men timelines, so whichever one this turns out to be should be the important one, which is also presumably why it has to be the one Monica Rambeau ended up in.
Could this new mutant universe be numbered 617 or 615, sitting right beside the 616?
If it isn't the 10,005, there may be a sense of what universe this actually is. Multiverse of Madness introduced the 838 with its own Fantastic Four, Illuminati, and Professor X, and then the Fantastic Four reboot film showed the 828, an adjacent, totally different retro-futuristic universe designated as the side-by-side universe to the 838. Following that pattern, the 616 might have an X-Men universe sitting right beside it, perhaps numbered the 617 or even the 615, which could be revealed as this comic-accurate X-Men timeline.
Some will point to the Jonathan Hickman comic run and argue that pairing was the 616 and the 1610 Ultimate Universe, but it's worth remembering the MCU's own 616 was fashioned after the Ultimates in a lot of ways, so it seems unlikely Marvel would hand out that same designation to a separate Ultimate Universe when it already used 616 for its own continuity. This numbering idea needs more support than just pointing it out from this update, but it could explain why Monica Rambeau slipped into their universe in the first place during a tear: it may be the adjacent universe, the one running into the 616, the one the X-Men need to fight off.
The incursions may be no one's fault, not even Steve Rogers' or Loki's
The update implies the X-Men have already fought through multiple battles and incursions, which presumably would not have been against the 616. Maybe they already fought the universe on the other side, or there are multiple universes surrounding everyone now that Loki changed the shape of the multiverse from the loom into a more interwoven tree, with branches interweaving, the purple fringe on the green tree, possibly representing incursions running into each other. That would mean no one person, not even Loki, is responsible for the incursions, they're more a byproduct of the multiverse shifting from the loom to the Yggdrasil world tree, with Loki's sacrifice at the center reading as Marvel's own critique that this was something that had to happen.
So while Doom may believe Steve Rogers is responsible for starting the very first incursion, it may have always had to happen this way regardless. That isn't meant to absolve Rogers, but rather to say that when the X-Men and the Avengers battle each other for the planet's existence, it isn't one side good and one side bad. It reads as a sympathetic, empathetic situation for both sides, where the calamity may be no one's fault and was going to be impending no matter what, with each side simply fighting so their own side survives.
Multiple versions of Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter point to multiple X-Men timelines too, but time is limited
Trusted industry insider sources have already indicated there will be multiple versions of characters, including Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, so it seems fairly safe to assume there will be multiple versions of a lot of characters, Steve Rogers among them, and possibly multiple X-Men timelines as well. Even so, there doesn't seem to be enough time in the film to focus on so many different variants of so many different characters, and those time constraints likely mean the choices of which variants to focus on have to be narrow.
That doesn't rule out a strong first act where the X-Men are shown fighting unbelievable variants, heroes and villains alike, in a montage of previous battles before the story picks up with them at the current point in time. That would help explain why, in the X-Men trailer, the mutants look the way they do, worn down from having already fought several battles trying to protect their universe from an incursion. It still looks like dead mutants were CGI'd out of the opening scenes, and the state the X-Men are shown in doesn't bode too well for how some of them end up.
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's X-Men may not survive, possibly clearing the way for Sadie Sink's Jean Grey
There had already been an assumption that this might be Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's last appearances as their X-Men characters, and that has been reported as such elsewhere. Building on that, it's possible that none of these X-Men survive at all, which could pave the way for newer X-Men, like Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, to appear later in Avengers: Secret Wars.
