Avengers: Doomsday: is Scarlet Witch back? Fake poster debunked

An AI image passed off as official Marvel art is not real, and a repost from Elizabeth Olsen's longtime stunt double offers hope but no confirmation.

Avengers: Doomsday: is Scarlet Witch back? Fake poster debunked

Two new pieces of evidence have surfaced suggesting Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch may be back in Avengers: Doomsday, but neither one confirms it. One is a poster being shared as official Marvel art that is fake and made with AI. The other is an Instagram story from Olsen's longtime stunt double and movement coach, which I couldn't verify myself because it had already expired.

I want Wanda Maximoff back as much as anyone, but I don't think either of these items settles the question.

Daniel RPK's Avengers: Doomsday reshoot report puts Scarlet Witch among the Latverian witches

Before getting to the new evidence, there's the reshoot report. As soon as Avengers: Doomsday started reshoots, industry insider Daniel RPK shared some information about what those reshoots were focused on. One of the scenes he said was being added to involves the Latverian witches toward the end of the film.

He made a point of mentioning more than once that the Scarlet Witch was one of those witches and that Elizabeth Olsen was back reprising her role. This wasn't a single update. He said it in about three or four of them and used her by name. Daniel RPK is one of the most trusted sources in the game.

The "official" Scarlet Witch poster from Marvel Studios is fake and AI generated

The first item spreading around is a so-called new official poster from Marvel Studios. It has the exact right font and the exact right logo, and it shows three Latverian witches. The one in the center has a cloak that has been very noticeably orange in the real marketing, but here it's tinted a little more red.

You can clearly see the hand motion being made by the center witch. The center witch's gesture replicates to a tee the hand motion Elizabeth Olsen started using in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Scarlet Witch wields her magic. That pose is iconic from an Age of Ultron poster, and there are different angles of her making this exact motion whenever she goes to wield her chaos magic.

This one almost got me. Accounts I normally trust on social media to vet this kind of thing were all resharing it because someone called it official. "It is not official." Marvel has not shared it anywhere. You can run it through one of the AI detectors and it'll say 99% made by a human hand, but it most certainly is AI. So it does nothing to clarify whether Scarlet Witch is in the movie.

Elizabeth Olsen's stunt double Jennifer White shares the Avengers: Doomsday witches poster

The second item just might. I missed the post itself because it was only up for 24 hours on Instagram stories and had expired by the time I went to look. Many mainstream outlets did not miss it, though, and there are screenshots. IMDb.com reported on it under a headline about Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch stunt double fueling Wanda rumors by sharing the Avengers: Doomsday Latverian witches poster.

That's not the fake poster. It's one from the batch Marvel released at once. IMDb wrote that "Marvel has turned the Avengers Doomsday campaign into one big guessing game," and that the question of Wanda Maximoff's whereabouts has kept fans busy. The latest wrinkle involves Jennifer White, longtime movement coach and stunt double behind the Scarlet Witch.

According to the report, White has been a quiet fixture in the character's physical language since the early days of the MCU, "helping shape the spooky hand movements that define the role." That's the same gesture copied in the fake poster. That history is why fans watch closely whenever she posts anything Marvel related. This time she reposted the ScreenX poster for Avengers: Doomsday to her Instagram story, which places Doctor Doom front and center with three masked Latverian witches.

The ScreenX art is part of a larger set built around Downey's Doom, with separate pieces for formats and partners including Dolby, RealD, 4DX and Fandango, each giving Doom a different look.

Why Jennifer White's post doesn't confirm Elizabeth Olsen's return

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, because maybe this is as good a confirmation as we're going to get, especially alongside Daniel RPK naming Olsen and her character more than once. The problem is that Jennifer White has worked as a choreographer and an overall movement coach on Marvel movies outside of the times she stunt doubled for Wanda. Her involvement does not mean for sure, 100%, that Elizabeth Olsen is in the movie.

If you've been following the headlines, some lesser known actresses have been confirmed one by one to be playing Latverian witches. To be fair, I'll also admit that the number of projects Jen White has done outside of doubling for Scarlet Witch is minimal. Still, for a film like Avengers: Doomsday, there is surely a ton of adjacent talent that worked on projects leading up to it, or maybe worked on it in a preproduction capacity.

Elizabeth Olsen's pregnancy and the masked Latverian witches

There's another factor I brought up as soon as Daniel RPK started dropping his Scarlet Witch scoops about two months ago. Elizabeth Olsen spent the majority of this year pregnant, and she didn't have her child until right before the Avengers: Doomsday reshoots began.

That doesn't rule her out. These Latverian witches wear masks. If she's truly one of them and her mask never comes off, she could simply go to a nearby studio and record an easy voiceover for the character.

Could the VisionQuest finale hint at Scarlet Witch's return?

Is there hope she's returning as Scarlet Witch? Absolutely. Is there confirmation? Certainly not from the fake AI poster, and unfortunately not from this social media post. My fingers are crossed that she's back. I doubt this is one of the cameos Marvel would be willing to reveal in the upcoming trailers.

There may be a signal or two coming soon, though, with the VisionQuest finale approaching. If there were ever a time to show a way for Wanda to reenter the MCU after it was confirmed that she perished at Wundagore Mountain, this would be it. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of some kind of signal, Easter egg or hint in the finale.

I'm curious whether a quick cameo as a Latverian witch with maybe only one or two lines, or just seeing her at the end of the film, would be enough for people. I see it from Elizabeth Olsen's standpoint: if she's coming back as Wanda, she'd want a meaningful role, and at this point "they really owe her a solo movie."
