Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Global Release Dates and English Dub Cast Revealed, With IMAX Screenings
Crunchyroll and Toei Animation set an August 19 North American date, named the full English cast, and released the first dubbed trailer.
Crunchyroll and Toei Animation announced the global theatrical release dates for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in a press release, alongside the full English dub cast. The English dub was dated for August 19 in North America, the date I had reported before, and the film was set for select IMAX screenings.
The announcement came after the film had already opened in Japan. With it came the first English dub trailer, which I listened to for the first time when the release went out. My reactions to those new voices are below.
Super Hero was set for August 19 in North America, with Latin America a day earlier
August 19 was the date for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Zambia and Vietnam. So multiple countries were getting the film on the same day. Even earlier, on August 18, it was set to open in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Central America, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay. That meant Latin American audiences would see it about a day before North America. Australia and New Zealand were getting the English dub.
A lot of people had asked me when the film would reach their country, and this was what had been given out at that point. If your country was not on the list, it meant the film would arrive after these dates. I did not have an exact date for those territories. I could only pass on what had been announced.
Asian release dates ran from late August to the end of September
India and Indonesia were dated for August 26. Many people had asked me about the Indian release, and this meant fans there would not have to wait as long as they did for Broly. Malaysia and Brunei followed on August 30, then the Philippines on August 31.
Singapore was set for September 1, Taiwan for September 8 and South Korea for September 15. Thailand, Hong Kong and Macau were dated for September 29. The press release said additional global release dates would be announced soon, so any country missing from the list might get the film later on.
One thing surprised me. I was sure France and Germany would get the film a lot sooner, and according to this release they were not. That surprised me because French Dragon Ball fans get everything early.
The returning English cast kept the long running voices
The announcement named the entire dub cast. Kyle Hebert returned as Gohan and Sean Schemmel as Goku, the voices that have been voicing these characters forever. Goten was voiced by Robert McCollum, which I called an interesting choice. Christopher R. Sabat returned as Piccolo and Vegeta.
Monica Rial was Bulma, Sonny Strait was Krillin, Eric Vale was Trunks and Kara Edwards was Videl. Jeannie Tirado was playing Pan, and this time she got actual dialogue. When she voiced Pan in Dragon Ball Super, she only did baby noises, because all Pan did was make crying baby sounds.
Charles Martinet as Magenta led a new cast with some interesting names
The new English voice cast had some interesting names on it. Zach Aguilar voiced Dr. Hedo, which I thought was going to be an interesting one. Aleks Le played Gamma 1 and Zeno Robinson played Gamma 2.
Magenta was voiced by Charles Martinet, which I called an interesting choice. Carmine was voiced by Jason Marnocha.
The dubbed trailer followed the Japanese trailers closely
The dubbed trailer was the English version of the second trailer that came out late the previous year. The trailers were all going to match the Japanese ones. One line caught me: "Don't let it go to your head, Vegeta." I did not remember that line being in the original.
Kyle Hebert's Gohan sounded serious for this one. So far, I liked Gamma 1's voice. It was a little less nasally than the Japanese version, but it definitely sounded superheroic. I think they figured out the tone for this film. It was supposed to be lighter, but still pretty serious. It is not a joke movie, but it is a bit lighter and not too dark. The Broly movie was probably a little darker.
When a Gamma taunted Piccolo over an "underwhelming performance," I'm not entirely sure which Gamma it was, but I think it was Gamma 1. That delivery sounded a bit like the modern Sonic the Hedgehog. Not exactly, but a little.
Magenta's Red Ribbon Army line and Sabat's deeper Piccolo stood out
The trailer's line about the return of the Red Ribbon Army being near came from Charles Martinet's Magenta. In my view, the Red Ribbon Army has really already returned. They were just not public yet.
Dr. Hedo was heard saying he had picked up new intel on who the villains are. I was so used to the Japanese version at that point, having seen the film in Japanese, but the dub sounded doable. Chris Sabat's deep Piccolo sounded like his real voice. That came through when Piccolo told Gohan it was do or die time and to draw out all of his strength.
I did wonder whether Kyle Hebert would be able to hit the screams, especially the big scream at the end of the film.
Calling it "calamity" reminded me of Zelda
The trailer used the phrase "Calamity is born." It did not call the threat the ultimate evil or the secret weapon. It called it calamity. I know calamity is a word that existed before Zelda, but it comes off like Calamity Ganon.
One exclamation in the trailer got a strong reaction out of me. I joked that maybe the uncut version would throw in a stronger word, then said no, they won't do it.
Super Hero was set for IMAX in the United States for the first time
The film was set for select IMAX screenings, which I had broken a few days earlier. This would be the first time a Dragon Ball film was released in IMAX in the United States. I called that a big deal, because for Broly, Resurrection F and Battle of Gods, only Japan got the IMAX version.
We were going to get an IMAX cut of this film, and I was very excited about it.
Did the English cast live up to the Japanese version for you, and could Kyle Hebert hit that final scream?
