Avengers Doomsday Post-Credit Scenes Reportedly Reveal Loki's Death and a Battleworld Twist for Wolverine and Spider-Man
A new scoop points to two serious, joke-free post-credit scenes tying Avengers Doomsday directly into Avengers Secret Wars.
A new rumor about Avengers Doomsday points to two extremely serious post-credit scenes, with no jokes at all, that would set up Avengers Secret Wars. One is said to reveal that Loki is still alive but without the powers he had in his series, even though Loki reportedly dies during the movie. The other is said to show Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman together on Battleworld.
In recent interviews, there is one specific thing the Russo brothers keep leaning on as the definitive factor that makes Avengers Doomsday much different than the four Avengers films before it, and that is the emotional complexity, specifically the tone, where this will be the most serious Marvel movie we have probably ever seen. As clear evidence of this, all the footage we have seen of Avengers Doomsday so far has not revealed a single joke or line of comedic relief, where normal levity is usually woven into even the heaviest moments in the MCU.
James Mack's scoop describes two joke free post-credit scenes
This latest scoop comes from industry insider and Twitter scoopster James Mack, who had a huge update about the post-credit scenes. As is always worth repeating, no scooper gets everything right, so this should be taken with a grain of salt, though he has established a track record over the last 24 months of being reported on. This is also a spoiler warning, since there may be spoilers contained in the details that follow.
James Mack wrote, "A very hot rumor just reached my ears about Avengers Doomsday. Apparently, the Russo brothers want two extremely serious post-credit scenes with no jokes whatsoever setting up Avengers Secret Wars." The first idea would reveal Loki is still alive but without his powers, and the second would show Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman on Battleworld. To be fair, these three characters have been scooped as part of Avengers Secret Wars for the better part of the last year.
Loki reportedly dies in the film, so the post-credit version may be a variant
As far as Loki appearing without his powers, this seems to imply, and I am just reading between the lines here, that this may be a different variant of the character, because the scoop says Loki dies during the movie. Presumably that does not send him to Battleworld, but it may. It may be that some of the souls that perish as the multiverse is dying are pruned, so to speak, and end up wherever Battleworld is.
Battleworld was always described as "the void" in the original rumor, though I have been pretty skeptical about that, and I still am. I think Battleworld is something Doctor Doom will fabricate from the remnants of the multiverse, and I plan to get more into that in future theory videos.
Latest plot leaks tie Wolverine and Spider-Man's fate directly to Doom winning
The latest plot leaks have all included the opening of the film, where apparently Tobey Maguire will be battling Deadpool and Wolverine, at the very least from the universe designated 10,005, and perhaps Magneto facing off against his own rogues gallery as well. The leaks basically all read along the same lines, that Deadpool successfully sets off a reality eraser bomb to save their own universe, that he and Magneto successfully escape, but Wolverine is left behind, with the assumed fate being that Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man do not make it.
This post-credit scene would basically circle back on that and show that yes, indeed, they did make it. They survived, and now they are over in Battleworld. I will go ahead and say the quiet part out loud here, that this means Doom wins. Because Deadpool and Wolverine are so notably absent from a majority of Avengers Doomsday, it makes perfect sense to me that Wolverine did not die at the beginning of the film.
Kevin Feige reportedly always wanted Deadpool and Wolverine deep in Secret Wars
It has been continually reported that the original plan was to have Deadpool and Wolverine highly involved in Avengers Secret Wars. This was said to be Kevin Feige's directive on the back of seeing Deadpool and Wolverine, and the box office spoke for itself. Marvel would be pretty foolish not to bring back its most popular characters, characters that more people saw in theaters than any other outside of a couple of films involving Spider-Man.
So it was always in the cards, pun intended, for Marvel Studios to have them be part of Avengers Secret Wars.
A theory on why magic will not work for anyone on Battleworld
Regardless of the Loki variant question, I have a theory on why no hero who has magic or has ever wielded magic before will be able to do so if they are on Battleworld. The runes that have been part of the iconography for Doctor Doom over the last year and a half look like an attempt by him to recreate the exact same conditions we learned about in WandaVision, one of the earliest projects in the multiverse saga, where a circle of runes means any sorcerer inside cannot use their magic.
I think that is why the runes were shown in a circle encapsulating the green stained glass so famously on the back of the Doomsday countdown clock that appeared at the end of the preview trailers. Through that stained glass, we may be looking at the beginning of what Doctor Doom has started creating as Battleworld, and the runes on his gloves in the trailer may be some sort of ultimate lockout, where no magic is used by any wielder, regardless of their power set.
To be fair, it is called Battleworld because they do battle, and it would make for a very boring Avengers Secret Wars if no heroes had any powers whatsoever. They will, but the magic wielders will not be able to wield their magic, especially not in the face of Doctor Doom, who will be the Sorcerer Supreme, so to speak, or the only magic wielder, maybe outside his witch followers, who we are going to see in this upcoming film. So it may be that Loki still has his powers and just cannot use them, or it may be a different variant altogether who never became the God of Stories but still has that potential.
Loki's death may leave the "sun will shine again" line for Secret Wars
Loki has featured so heavily, not only in setting up the multiverse but really as a main protagonist of this whole saga, that I would be very surprised if he was not a huge part of Avengers Secret Wars. Keep in mind, if the plot leaks are true, by the time Steve Rogers and Thor make it back to the TVA, Loki is already dead. Doctor Doom has already attacked, destroyed the TVA, killed Loki, and taken his heart out.
That means the "the sun will shine again on us" plotline, a line I still think is tied to why Thor was crying and one I have been hoping Marvel would serve up, will not be able to happen in Doomsday. Doomsday will have to wait for that moment in Avengers Secret Wars. Some of the earliest plot leaks indicated that in the final moment, Loki is going to show up with a whole new group of multiverse Avengers, some of which we could not even imagine, huge fan cameos for characters cast in a different way or variants we have not seen before, sort of a what if moment. While that certainly may be a distinct possibility, I still think it is more likely than not that whatever is going on between Thor and Loki is a moment that will be had during Avengers Secret Wars.
My hype for Avengers Doomsday keeps growing despite past criticism
Quite honestly, the more I hear about this film, the more my personal hype has grown. I often say that two things can be true at the same time. I have been critical of Marvel over the multiverse saga for maybe taking themselves too seriously, both in world and out of world, when they probably should not have. I also think this is exactly what the Marvel fandom needs right now, some really serious, high stakes Marvel quality storytelling, and it seems like we are about to get the most high stakes quality story we have ever gotten.
This movie looks absolutely stunning, and we still really have not seen much in the trailers. I know we have not gotten a really good tied-in post-credit scene for a while, but I do not think Marvel Studios is going to waste this opportunity between Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars. Keep in mind, there are no other Marvel movies slated for next year, so it will literally be Doomsday, then a twelve month wait for Secret Wars.
Do you think these two post-credit scenes would be enough to satisfy you, or would they leave you wanting more?
