Samara Weaving Reportedly Cast as Emma Frost in Marvel's X-Men Movie, Deadline Says
An exclusive report says director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige landed on Weaving after screen tests held right after the July 4th weekend.
Deadline reported this afternoon that Samara Weaving is the choice to play Emma Frost in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men movie, according to sources cited in the outlet's exclusive. Not an industry insider or Twitter scooper. This is coming from a major trade.
Deadline's report states: "While there is no mention of the X-Men at Comic-Con's Hall H this past weekend, Marvel Studios seems to be getting closer to forming its team of mutants. Sources tell Deadline that Samara Weaving is the choice to play Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men movie. After meeting with a number of candidates, director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige landed on Weaving earlier this week to tackle the role. Marvel had no comment on the casting." Deadline adds that Weaving's audition was, in their words, too hard to beat once the final list of actors was tested right after July 4th.
Deadline says Emma Frost drew the most thorough search of any X-Men role
Deadline notes that while James Bond has had everyone's attention this summer, the most active casting process has actually been assembling the new team of mutants, and that the Frost character appears to have elicited the most thorough search among the new cast. That detail is more interesting to me than the casting itself, because it could mean a couple of different things.
It could mean Emma Frost has a huge role in this first X-Men movie, or even in the first part of the saga. But it could also mean the opposite for other characters. If Marvel had a much more particular type of actor in mind for Rogue, Beast, or Cyclops, they may have only screen tested one, two, or three actors tops because the list was already narrow. With Emma Frost, it sounds like the search was more open ended, with a bunch of candidates considered before Marvel simply went with the strongest audition.
So this doesn't necessarily mean Emma Frost is going to be a huge character in the movie, but it doesn't mean the opposite either. It could just mean there were a lot more test screenings for that role specifically.
The report confirms multiple screen tests took place right after July 4th
The more exciting part of this for me is that the article confirms screen tests were taking place, literally about a month ago, right after the July 4th weekend. Screen tests come last in the process. Not every actor who auditions with a tape or a meeting gets one. Studios call in the last remaining candidates to put them in costume and read through lines to see what it actually looks like.
Maybe the most famous Marvel screen test of all time is the one that locked Robert Downey Jr. into the Iron Man role, but that wasn't a situation with a huge pool of actors screen testing. You have to be pretty far along in consideration, or have someone in your camp pushing hard for you, to get to that stage.
Deadline's article uses the plural, "screen tests," which suggests it might have been multiple actresses for Emma Frost, but it's also probably multiple characters being tested at the same time. That means, sitting on hard drives at Marvel Studios right now, there's likely a screen test for one or two actors for Cyclops, probably one for Rogue, and probably a couple more for other main characters. That is exciting just to say out loud.
The timing lines up with earlier rumors about Adam Driver as a villain
This trade report also lines up with, and adds validity to, the hoopla we've been hearing from lesser known sources, the Twitter scoops and industry insiders who don't necessarily have major editorial backing or proven track records. Those sources started floating names like Adam Driver being cast as a villain, possibly Mr. Sinister, around the beginning of the month, right around when we now know these screen tests were actually taking place.
We've also had industry insiders like Jeff Sneider naming Sadie Sink as Jean Grey years ago, but this is the first Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, or Variety level casting announcement of its kind for this project, and those trades are usually completely accurate.
Why there was no cast reveal at Hall H
Part of that is because the script is still moving. Michael Lesslie wrote the original version pitched back in 2022 and delivered in early 2023, and it's been three years since. Writers who have worked with Jake Schreier before are now either taking that script to the finish line or reworking parts of it, which could bring in more mutants that still need to be cast.
Marvel is being careful because this cast could last decades
Marvel Studios has a very high bar here, because whoever gets cast, and they are going much younger for this, could be in the role for a decade and a half or two decades going forward in the MCU. We know they're casting in their twenties for the core X-Men team. Samara Weaving is only in her early to mid thirties right now, so she could be playing Emma Frost for another 20 years.
The names so far are more mainstream than the "fresher faces" reports suggested
A few days ago there was a Collider article referencing Variety sources explaining that Marvel Studios did not want to shell out huge money for A-list actors, because what they did with Fantastic Four isn't sustainable and didn't translate to a better box office. Spending big on Vanessa Kirby and Pedro Pascal didn't necessarily make that film more desirable at the box office. The idea was to bring in fresher, younger, less expensive faces who could grow into these roles.
But look at the names actually coming out. Samara Weaving may not be a top Hollywood A-lister, but she's not a C-lister either. Neither is Adam Driver, who reportedly is confirmed to be playing a villain, not Magneto, but possibly Mr. Sinister. These are names that will demand a real price tag. So maybe the core team is getting younger, fresher faces, but so far the names that are coming out are definitely Hollywood mainstream, and we really haven't heard one, quote unquote, unknown name yet.
I'm hoping some of those less known actors do find their way into the cast, because in my opinion those roles often end up being the best, especially when the character IP is already this strong. That's exactly what other actors complain about when they say they don't want to take superhero roles, but for the right actor early in a career, this can change everything. I'm hoping Marvel goes a little greener, maybe not as fresh as Iman Vellani, but a little more unknown. Then again, we're in such a different social media landscape than 2008 through 2012 that I don't know if a true unknown is even an option anymore.
My verdict on Weaving as Emma Frost
In my opinion, if Samara Weaving is truly playing Emma Frost, that's a 10 out of 10 casting. I like her work, I think she's an incredible actress, and I think she looks like a perfect Emma Frost. If Adam Driver ends up playing Mr. Sinister, that's also a 10 out of 10 for me, though I'll admit I don't love the idea of him as Magneto. Hopefully Marvel Studios stays on this track, because this first confirmed X-Men casting has me thinking it's shaping up to be a banger.
Do you agree that Samara Weaving is a 10 out of 10 choice for Emma Frost, or is there someone else you would have picked?
