Avengers Doomsday Insider Claims Final Trailer Will Reveal Mobius and Doctor Strange
A new scoop suggests Marvel wants its next trailer to hit a wow factor by unveiling two characters who haven't been confirmed for the film yet.
Marvel had confirmed that tickets for Avengers Endgame Encore were set to go on sale August 25th, and a trailer was expected to coincide with that release. But it's a fresh update from an industry insider that has me most curious right now, with new details on how Marvel Studios might be switching up its approach for the next Avengers Doomsday trailer, which this insider is calling the final trailer.
An insider's scoop claims the final Doomsday trailer will unveil Mobius and Doctor Strange
The scoop comes from an industry insider and scooper. As I always say about scoopers, nobody gets everything right, but this insider has established quite the track record over the last year. Take that as you will.
His update reads, "Word's just reached me that Marvel's marketing team for Avengers Doomsday wants the final trailer to be very epic with tons of action sequences and moments that make you go, 'Wow, I can't believe this.' And apparently, they're going to reveal two unannounced characters, Mobius and Doctor Strange."
Calling it the final trailer points toward a late September drop
Before breaking down those two names, I want to focus on the word final placed before trailer, because that implies Marvel Studios might be releasing this one soon. We all strongly assume, probably rightly, that we'll get a new Doomsday trailer in front of Avengers Endgame Encore when it hits theaters at the end of September, so we can't be far off from the next drop.
Even if this is the last official trailer, there will still be plenty of TV spots, official clips, and additional footage as promo closes in on December. But calling this the final trailer at the end of September does make sense given Marvel's general pattern: a teaser, then two full length trailers, then TV spots flooding in right at the end.
Doctor Strange's reveal should come from late in the film, tied to Doom's followers
I hope Marvel Studios can resist the urge to reveal too much here. They've already cut four preview trailers in December and two official trailers this year that are largely built around the same footage, just with additional frames or scenes. From everything we've heard, most of that footage is coming from the first act or the start of the second act.
Doctor Strange, based on everything reported about Doomsday, isn't set to be revealed until the unveiling of Doom's followers, and that reveal itself won't happen until we've learned Doctor Doom is the villain against the Avengers. That's not anything early in the film. I think this pushes Marvel toward having to give us a little more than usual if they want that wow moment, and I really hope they can tow that line without spoiling the big stuff, unannounced characters, secret cameos, or third act action. I'm totally fine waiting to see that at the theatrical release.
Marvel's marketing has overexposed reveals before, from Multiverse of Madness to The Marvels
I've always said I'm not sure Marvel's marketing team understands that if you haven't bought tickets going into the last couple of weeks before release, there's nothing a TV spot can put out that changes your mind. For Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it felt like Marvel got nervous and started putting every reveal into TV spots, with a new member of the Illuminati appearing daily in the final week before release.
For The Marvels, a couple of days before release, Marvel dropped a not so subtle X-Men hint as if that would enthuse people who hadn't bought tickets yet, and it turned out that was only a post credit scene. In both cases, I'm not sure either reveal really served the film, and I'm not sure it moved the bottom line or sold any extra tickets.
Doomsday's ticket tracking already matches Spider-Man Brand New Day
The good news for Avengers Doomsday is Marvel shouldn't be feeling any of that pressure at all. Based on the earliest tracking for the first round of tickets and this most recent round, sales are tracking out of control, literally on the same level as Spider-Man Brand New Day. It looks like this is going to make an easy 2 billion dollars.
Whatever pressure Marvel felt in the past presell tickets for The Marvels or Multiverse of Madness, worrying the numbers weren't high enough, Doomsday shouldn't have that problem. Marvel should understand that extra reveals in final TV spots aren't going to move any more tickets, especially if the first couple of weekends are already looking sold out.
The Mobius cameo fits the Loki tease, but a Doctor Strange reveal would be bigger
Mobius showing up in a quick cameo doesn't surprise me at all. We already know we're going to see Loki visiting Steve Rogers in his TVA garb, presumably before Steve is sitting at the center of the multiverse. I want to put an asterisk on that, because the plot leak previously read said Loki visits Steve from the center of the multiverse, and I can't wait for the film to explain that, since there should be a time jump between when Steve and his family relocate to the A2A and when Doomsday picks up. I think that implicates Loki as being earlier in his development, somewhere in season 1 or season 2.
Doctor Strange being in this trailer would be quite the reveal, because all we know so far is that he'll be one of Doom's followers, wearing a mask with a third eye that's how we'd know it's him. If a scene revealed Doctor Strange with his mask off, that would definitely be pulled from the third act, one of the more major reveals we've had in trailers that have otherwise recycled the same scenes with extra frames. It's unclear whether the tease means Strange with the mask off or on, but since that reveal shouldn't come until late in the film, it opens the door to this trailer carrying a lot of footage we haven't seen yet, which at this point might be the only way to hit that wow factor.
My timing guess for the final trailer is speculation, not part of the scoop
To be clear, the idea that this final trailer drops at the end of September was not part of the insider's scoop, and I haven't seen any other insiders weigh in on that timing. We're just weeks off from getting this next Doomsday trailer, and I think it's safe to assume whatever this final trailer turns out to be will land at the end of September alongside Avengers Endgame Encore, though I could be wrong. It could just be the most recent trailer already out. It does feel a little early, but October and November are right around the corner.
Whatever Marvel decides, my hope is that they don't give us too much, especially in those last minute TV spots as we get closer to release.
What would you need to see in that trailer to hit the wow, I can't believe this factor?
