Charles Melton's Reaction to the Beast Question Looks Like Confirmation to Me
Days after reports had him dropping out of the X-Men reboot, the actor's answer about playing Beast left me with little doubt about where things stand.
Just days ago I passed along a breaking story from trusted industry insiders that actor Charles Melton, the one repeatedly tied to the role of Beast for the X-Men reboot, had dropped out of the film and left the cast. That report also suggested it might have thrown a wrench into Marvel Studios getting ready for a D23 cast announcement. Now, after Melton was asked point blank about the Beast rumors, his reaction looks to me like confirmation that he is playing the role.
When that dropout story broke, I pointed out that he was never confirmed by the Hollywood trades in the first place, so it was hard to say someone dropped out of a cast they were never officially part of. Within about 12 hours of that report, we started hearing minor corrections. The reporting itself was real, but it was less about him leaving entirely and more about him going through renegotiations, or as it was put, "trying to get more money." That tracks with how Marvel Studios has historically handled contracts for lead actors at the start of a franchise, ramping up into multi-million dollar deals over time.
Charles Melton lit up when asked directly about playing Beast
The outlet theplaylist.net caught up with Melton again and asked him point blank about the rumors he was playing Beast in the X-Men reboot. He started beaming. Not just smiling, beaming. He said, "It depends on what day or moment you catch me on, but right now, I'd say I think I believe in Jake Schreier and Lee Sung Jin so much, I would love to work with them again."
The "again" is a nod to the fact that he, Schreier, and Sung Jin all worked together on the TV show Beef. What stood out to me was the opening line, "it depends on what day or moment you catch me on." I think that's basically a wink toward what we'd been hearing all week, that there have probably been intense negotiations going back and forth between the studio and his agent.
Why the money fight makes sense for an X-Men multi-picture deal
It's an actor's agent's job to get as much as possible, and the number of films likely wrapped into this contract may be some of the bigger ones we've seen from Marvel Studios lately. The studio used to lock actors into multi-picture deals, then for a stretch moved away from that to attract better talent by offering smaller commitments of one, two, or maybe three films. We hadn't heard of these mega contracts in a while.
But with the X-Men set to be the prominent feature of the saga after Avengers: Secret Wars, it's almost certainly the case that core cast members are signing three-picture deals or more, just for the X-Men reboot alone, before even factoring in Secret Wars or whatever crossover films follow. Marvel Studios cannot afford to put core X-Men actors under contract for the MCU only to run into availability problems when it's time to cross them over into other films.
A more cohesive approach after the Multiverse Saga's disconnected run
Some people will point out that Marvel Studios' approach through the Multiverse Saga has been disconnected, going project by project, introducing new characters, going wider without tying it all together. But they seem to be learning from that and changing direction with a more cohesive story going forward. We've heard multiple reports that Marvel Studios knows Kevin Feige was spread too thin, and to avoid that happening again, they're reducing output and keeping the Russos on through the next saga to oversee things and lock everything in by the time we reach Avengers 7 and Avengers 8.
Marvel Studios' president, normally coy, has been vocal about the X-Men since there was no announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, and his most recent comments indicate he sees the X-Men as a multi-stage saga that will be the core, prominent feature of an MCU that now has almost all the character rights under one roof.
Why I didn't expect an X-Men cast reveal, and why that changed
I was pretty vocal over the last month telling people to temper expectations, and I did not expect a casting announcement for the X-Men at D23. Then Hollywood trades like Deadline reported that screen tests had already happened at the beginning of July, and I've said repeatedly that a screen test is not the beginning or middle of casting, it's the end of it. If that happened over a month ago, it's reasonable to assume a majority of the cast could be under contract by now, or at least enough of it to make an announcement.
Even so, I haven't fully bought the idea that Marvel Studios has been rushing to get people under contract just for this event, because planning a live in-person reveal for major actors and actresses takes weeks if not months. That means there may have been a light agreement in place between the director, an actor, and Marvel Studios that then went into formal contract negotiations, and hang-ups there may be exactly why Melton was reported as out just days ago, if the two sides reached an impasse over money for a time.
Why D23 instead of San Diego Comic-Con signals a shift
Coming from a lot of industry insiders, it seemed the X-Men announcement was set to make up the majority of the D23 presentation. One industry insider said the presentation would only include Doomsday, Vision Quest, and the X-Men announcement. The fact that Marvel Studios was scheduled to announce the X-Men cast at D23 instead of San Diego Comic-Con, when they easily could have done it there, signals something to me.
I know SDCC came before Spider-Man hit theaters and they were still trying to keep Sadie Sink's casting as Jean Grey under wraps, even though it wasn't really a secret. Now she can appear on stage without spoiling anything. But the fact that they skipped SDCC and were very likely doing this at D23 less than a month later tells me there's been a change. Hall H at SDCC has always been Marvel Studios' biggest announcement forum, but since 2022 they've slowly been shifting bigger reveals to D23, and I think this X-Men announcement is likely to be bigger than the Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3 reveals they made there. It'll be interesting to see where they put their major slate announcements a year or two from now.
