Lanterns: Hal Jordan's Locked Vault May Hold the Final Clue to His Murder

A vault that only opens to a live voice, a rejected voicemail and a dead man's secrets sit at the heart of the mystery episode six leaves behind

Episode six of Lanterns leaves us with a murder mystery and a vault that needs a dead man's live voice to open. I think that right now this vault holds the final clue explaining why Hal Jordan was so brutally killed.

Before anyone starts running around making claims, we do not know exactly what is inside the vault. At least not yet. Hal Jordan is dead, his vault is still locked, and the show has not revealed what he kept in there. I can't help but find it interesting how people and things in Lanterns carry meaning. So far, both the humans and the objects on display have had a significant impact, and this vault does not appear to be ordinary at all.

A storage key in Hal's belongings leads John Stewart straight to the vault

One thing is certain: almost everyone around Hal Jordan seems to have a good reason to dislike him. His relationships with some people are complicated. But even so, what could possibly lead to a death like this? So we have to ask what Hal knew or discovered, or whether he was involved in something that suddenly made his existence a problem for somebody. The answer could be anything. Maybe a document, or some evidence against someone.

In episode six, John and the woman Hal was seeing found a basic little storage key in Hal's belongings. They followed the key and ended up at the vault. That clearly shows something physical connecting the mystery of Hal to a location, and a location Hal actually controls. So my questions are who aside from Hal knew about the place, what Hal kept there, and who even had access to it. The one question I can't wrap my head around is why Hal needed this much security.

The vault rejects Hal's voicemail because it demands a live voice

The security is so strong that when the two of them reached the storage unit, the lock system fired off two very specific rules: "Recording unacceptable. Live voice print required." She has a voicemail of Hal's voice, but the vault did not accept it. The vault is not telling us that Hal's voice was faked, that the audio was edited, or that some impostor made the call. The lock explicitly rejected a replayed message.

Compare that moment to episode two, when John uses a cell phone so Hal can speak to the vault in real time. That earlier call worked. The voicemail failed, even though it was Hal's voice. Both scenarios used a phone speaker to play Hal's voice, so the difference is not audio quality. The difference is whether Hal Jordan is actively alive and speaking at that exact moment.

A robbery gone wrong, or a killer silencing the only key

With Hal dead, I am pushed to think deeply about this vault. What if someone wanted to rob it, underestimated its security and killed Hal, thinking that with him out of the way they could get in, only to end up staring at the vault with no way in? Given the character we have seen from Hal so far, it would not be surprising if there was something inside that somebody desperately wanted.

Think about the disaster that creates for a murderer. You have a heavily locked, high security vault holding something you desperately want, but the only human being whose voice can open that door is now dead on a football field. Unless you already opened it and took what you came for before pulling the trigger. If not, you have just created your own frustration.

There is another way to see it. Whoever killed Hal may have known he had something that could cause problems. Then they would not need to steal from the vault at all, just make sure nobody opens it by silencing the only voice that can.

Hal's murder may have nothing to do with the vault

There is a lot of mystery here, because we do not even know whether the killer knew about the vault. Possibly Hal was killed over a personal grudge and the vault has absolutely nothing to do with the motive. Fair enough. If Hal was shot over a grudge with zero connection to the vault, the evidence inside could still help John solve the murder without being the actual motive behind the trigger.

I would still expect whatever is inside to be a massive bombshell. If the vault opens and we find something completely ordinary with no connection to Hal's murder, then I will stop talking and accept it. So let's drop the claim that Hal was killed specifically to keep the door locked. All the same, I don't think I can keep silent. Lanterns does not give you a chance to be silent, because there is always a twist and something mysterious happening.

The voicemail reveals a softer Hal Jordan, but not his secrets

Am I the only one who realised the voicemail also gives us something interesting? We heard Hal trying to set up a normal date, using a cute pet name and inviting her over to hang out. The scene exposes Hal's softness and gives us deep emotional access to his private life. At some point I wondered if this was actually the Hal Jordan I know in this show. It is such a romantic side of him, while physically we are being kept locked out of his private vault.

That side of Hal gave John Stewart emotional information, yet he still can't inspect Hal's secrets. Emotional access and physical evidence arrive in two completely separate packages. The voicemail proves the two of them were intimate, certainly, but it does not settle everything that went on behind closed doors.

If the vault later produces evidence that brings her in for questioning, then her tearful breakdown at the door is not an alibi. That gives the vault a purpose way beyond what we see. It draws a clear line between knowing Hal socially and knowing what Hal kept secret. She knows Hal as a person, but John appears to be investigating Hal as a mystery.

John Stewart's architect background makes him the man to crack Hal's security

John's role in this show keeps getting more interesting. He is now building shelters, planning protection and creating spaces designed to protect people from dangerous things outside. This is a man who knows more than he appears to know. His background as an architect matters so much here. DC Comics lore established early on that John Stewart joined the Green Lantern mythos as a skilled architect, and the show's decision to give him a shelter company gives that classic background real weight.

John is not just a guy with a gun or a ring. He is a guy who spends his life thinking about how structures hold up under stress, who gets to be safe, and how much a barrier can take before it cracks. That makes him the best character to crack Hal's security. An architect understands a truth that regular people overlook: "Every structure, no matter how strong, has a weak point."

A yellow ring in the vault would mean Sinestro is out

But let's calm down. If the vault opens and we see something glowing, I certainly won't be the first to say that something in there got Hal killed, and nobody else should either. Let's ask the questions that matter. Whatever is in the vault needs to raise questions like who knew Hal had it, whether someone was looking for it, and whether it was connected to something happening before his death. I ask these questions because that is where evidence comes from, not just from the object we see.

Still, if we see a yellow ring in the vault, then I am definitely screaming, because that would mean Sinestro is out of his cell, that he escaped and someone helped him. We are still investigating, but whatever is in this vault will cause a lot of twists.

My belief: Hal was holding evidence on someone

If you ask me what I think is inside, I honestly believe it is evidence Hal has on someone. I don't know exactly what, but I think it could connect Hal to somebody we have not properly gotten to know yet. We know Hal has many enemies, but we don't know who killed him.

Emotionally, Hal's death has been processed, and it would be easy for him to be turned into a tragic hero whose secrets may show he was doing the right thing. Look at his funeral, where John reads the words Hal prepared for his own service. Hal wrote: "I hope I mattered." To me, Hal sounded like someone who cares about how people remember him, and he surely wanted to leave a good version of himself out there. I don't want to imagine the look on John's face if the vault opens and Hal was hiding something completely different.

I feel there is hope after all. Since the vault needs Hal speaking live, and there is a version of Hal standing before John, John potentially has something that can speak to the vault. It might be able to open it eventually.

Guy Gardner refuses to help over bad optics

Guy Gardner, the guy who can't keep quiet, also pulls a trick when he refuses to help John because of bad optics. That tells us everything about what drives his decisions: he cares about image and institutional reputation. It does not prove Guy knows who Hal's killer is, nor does it prove the Guardians ordered a hit on Hal. What it does show is how image can shape what people know or have access to. Meanwhile, John Stewart is risking his entire career to keep a dead man's case alive.

So when the vault is finally opened, keep a close eye on John and the questions he asks, because I really think Hal's vault is going to matter a lot. Whatever is inside could connect Hal's murder to something much bigger than a simple personal grudge. There is surely evidence of some sort in there, though I haven't said it is confirmed.

Whoever put a bullet in Hal's head expected his voice to die with him, and John Stewart just figured out how to make Hal speak from the grave. Whether that voice is enough to open the door is the next big test, and I can't wait to see what this vault exposes.

Do you think Hal's vault holds the motive for his murder, or was he killed over a personal grudge that has nothing to do with it?
