Silo: are only 7 of the 50 silos alive? Film Paradise's theory

A pop-up in Silo 1 lit just seven silos. I think it shows which silos the founders are watching, not which ones survived, and Silo 17's absence is the clue.

Silo: are only 7 of the 50 silos alive? Film Paradise's theory

Out of 50 silos, only seven appear to be left, and that question won't stop spinning in my head. In Silo (2023), the series starring Rebecca Ferguson, a pop-up appeared on the big screen while Troy was in the IT room. It showed all 50 silos with only seven of them lit. My verdict, after working through it, is that those seven are a watch list, not a count of the survivors.

I can't find answers on what happened to the other silos, not even in the books. Did the founders trigger the safeguard measures on them the same way they did in Silo 17? Below I also lay out what I think Season 4 could be heading toward, drawn from the book Shift.

Silo 1's screen lights just seven of 50 silos

If the screen means what it seems to mean, 43 silos simply vanished. The operations that wiped those people out were carried out by men like Troy and Victor. I don't want to say this, but it has to be said. If Troy remembers who he truly is, I don't think he'll be able to forgive himself. Forty-three silos erased is a regret he couldn't bear.

So the number everyone is leaning on is seven out of 50. The lit silos are 1, 14, 18, 19, 31, 42 and 44. I'm completely sure that another silo besides 18 is about to reveal a hidden secret about the silos. That's my own observation, though, and not something the show has confirmed.

Why Silo 17 is missing from the lit list

My biggest question is why Silo 17 isn't part of the list. After Troy killed thousands of its people, some remained, but without a generator. Silo 1 should have taken that into account. Instead, Silo 17 was removed from the lit silos, which implies everyone there died. Yet people are still inside. When Juliette visited Silo 17, she met some of them.

So how can Silo 1, with all its advanced technology, treat Silo 17 as empty space? They know that place well. Victor talked about Silo 17 like a man reading a league table. He placed a family in that silo and then called it the best. So it isn't that Silo 1 can't see Silo 17. It's a decision by Silo 1 that Silo 17 is finished.

They can trigger the safeguard measures, but not make sure nobody is left alive? That isn't acceptable. Or do they know and keep it secret? On that, I don't know. I think they simply assume Silo 17 is finished without checking the facts.

Is every silo connected to Silo 1?

We saw how Juliette and her people in Silo 18 uncovered Silo 1 at the bottom of the tunnel. So Silo 1 is already connected to at least one silo. If that's the case for all of them, the founders know exactly why they built it that way. Why else would you connect every silo to your own?

I can't wait to learn more about the silos other than 18 and what they've been through. They may already know the kind of secret Silo 18 uncovered.

Are the seven lit silos the ones in an emergency?

That makes me wonder why those seven are lit at all. Does it mean they're active, or something else? Maybe they're flagged as silos in an emergency that need immediate attention. Silo 18 was one of the lit ones, and given its situation, that tells me the lit silos may be the ones in crisis that the founders plan to deal with. If that's what the lighting means, then more than seven silos are active and working. Or maybe only Silo 17 was wiped out, as the show revealed to us. I'm honestly confused here.

If the lit silos are emergencies, what's wrong with 42, 31, 44, 19 and 14? Maybe they're close to a breakthrough, just like Juliette's silo. Will the founders start safeguard measures there and kill everyone? Maybe Juliette will fight hard to stop it, and when Troy remembers exactly who he is, the measures may stop and everyone is freed. Those are only my own thoughts, not what will definitely happen next season.

The seven may be the silos the founders are paying close attention to. In Silo 18, the safeguard failed. The tube ran past its allotted time, and that silo refuses to die. That makes it a problem, and the founders logged it. Silo 17, where drones killed 9,835 residents on that hill, they considered finished and dropped. Because they aren't done with 18, they lit it to focus on it. As for the other lit silos, I can't confirm what's really happening there. They may be causing the founders even more headaches. The show hasn't revealed it yet. But Silo 17 still has people in it and the founders treat it as done. That's reckless, and overconfidence in your systems without backup plans will turn against you.

My Season 4 prediction: a silo goes dark, as in Shift

I want to be upfront: this isn't in the trailer, and Apple hasn't confirmed any of it. It's my conclusion from reading the books. In Shift, there is a silo that hacks Silo 1's servers and disappears from their view, and the show hasn't touched that thread yet. So I expect one silo to go dark and scrambled on Silo 1's monitoring board, which would be deeply worrying for the founders.

A silo going dark doesn't mean it's empty. It means the founders have lost access to the cameras that let them watch and track it. In my prediction, this silo's people are highly intelligent, maybe far more than those in Juliette's silo. They investigate, cut ties with Silo 1, find the camera Silo 1 uses to spy on them and disable it. Juliette and her team never discovered the hidden camera in Silo 18.

Silo 1 would then be unable to monitor them, hear them or even get an alert if something went wrong. The founders always had ways to stay ahead of the silo people, but now the people would be a step ahead. All the founders could do is trigger a safeguard, and under one of the silo principles, that can only be triggered if a silo makes contact with another silo. That makes it hard to trigger, leaving them weak and helpless. The lesson I take from the show: never think you own people just because you built systems to control them. Once they uncover the truth, you'll pay more than you ever gained.

Every screen in Silo is a lie, so the list might be too

The view of the outside world on the screen is a lie. The green hill was a lie. The sensors are a lie the founders created, deciding what people would see long before the silo was built. So the pop-up listing the lit silos may be a lie too, maybe a prototype that does nothing. I think we have to wait for the show to confirm it.

The one screen I can say is real is the communication screen between Silo 1 and the other silos. The voice is disguised and the face isn't shown on the silo side, but you can hear the person. Silo 1 can see the person's face and even sense their heart rate and whether they're stressed or anxious.

My verdict: seven silos is a watch list, not a census

That pop-up never showed a single death, emergency or threat, or anything telling you what the lighting means. So anyone telling you 43 silos are gone is giving you a number that never appeared there. Silo 18 is on the list because the safeguard failed and the place won't die. Silo 17 is off because Silo 1 has already written it off, not because Silo 1 can't see it. Watching seven silos isn't the same as seven silos surviving, and until someone in the show says otherwise plainly, that's the only reading I'll defend.

As for what Juliette and Silo 18 do next in their push to take Silo 1, forcing its door open could expose them and invite attacks they never expected. Digging a tunnel into quiet parts of Silo 1 would do the job. And if Troy ever gets his memory back, Silo 1 never made a plan for the man he'll become.
