From Season 4: Why Jade's Bottle Tree Plan to Save the Children Is Doomed to Fail

Jade Herrera's scheme to dig up the sacrificed children's bones by tearing down the bottle tree looks clever on paper, but I think it is completely doomed to fail.

Jade Herrera thinks he has finally cracked Fromville. After his mushroom-fueled trip into the colony house basement in season 4 episode 5, he emerges convinced he has solved the puzzle and figured out how to save the children once and for all. I do not think it is going to work. In fact, I think this plan is not just going to fail, it is going to trigger the most catastrophic mob in the history of this town, turning the townspeople against Jade and sealing his fate in a closed, repeating loop.

Early in episode 8, Jade has a hard time even getting Boyd Stevens to consider the plan. Boyd looks at Jade's model, realizes there is only one way in or out of the chamber, and tells him to do better. Right now the online community around the show seems to be rallying behind Jade, but for the sake of this theory I am assuming Boyd eventually goes along with it, because it has everything to do with the bottle tree.

Jade's Extraction Plan Splits the Survivors Into Two Teams

The strategy itself sounds sharp at first. Split the survivors into two groups: one team dismantles the bottle tree to open a direct hole through the cave ceiling, while a second team rushes into the tunnels to excavate the remains of the sacrificed children before the monsters catch on. I compared it to an extraction mode raid, with the bones standing in for the rare loot, the second team playing the role of the extraction crew, and the opening beneath the tree's roots acting as the extraction point.

There is one glaring hole though: Jade has not actually proposed how anyone gets up to that ceiling to be pulled out. He mentioned using ropes in his last argument with Boyd before episode 8 ended, so hopefully that detail gets worked out. What bothers me more is that Jade is treating Fromville like a software program he can debug, some mechanical system he can outsmart with pure logic, right down to handing everyone a model of the tunnels that looks more like a rough sketch than something anyone could actually memorize before heading underground with their hearts in their hands.

Boyd Stevens Already Spots the Fatal Flaw in Jade's Logic

Jade believes that because he is a tech billionaire, he has outsmarted the entity running the town, even though he could not decode a single date from the bottle tree into a musical note without Jim's help. He is operating on the childish assumption that the children's bones are just sitting there for the taking, despite the fact that monsters who can speak and act in daylight are clearly not something you casually take from.

Boyd spotted this flaw immediately, arguing that Jade's plan leaves zero room for error and has no backup for when things go wrong. What Jade does not seem to grasp is that Fromville is not a static maze, it is a reactive, combative system that fights back the moment survivors try to force a structural change. The night of Boyd's totem plan proved that, when the night monsters coordinated a response and nearly got Kenny killed on every available porch, saved only by the bus.

Season 4 is already showing the rules breaking down further. The talismans, once the ultimate line of defense, failed to stop a recent rampage that tore through the settlement, and the totems from the settlement did not work against the night monsters either. If the town can rewrite its own rules while the survivors are just trying to survive, I do not see how it would sit back and allow them to pluck the bottle tree by its roots.

Destroying the Bottle Tree Means Destroying Fromville's Only Hope

The bottle tree is not some random landmark or a convenient extraction point the way Jade is treating it. As Victor explained back in season 3 episode 8, the roots of that tree are the physical manifestation of the children's remaining hope, with centuries of that hope poured directly into the roots to keep a fragile spiritual balance alive in the forest. Jade's plan is to chop the tree down entirely to expose the cave ceiling underneath.

The moment they destroy that tree, they are not just opening an escape route, they are permanently wiping out the only physical anchor of hope in Fromville. Victor also recalled that the boy in white said the tree had to be gone through, not underneath it and never by cutting it down, something the man he was speaking to repeatedly tried anyway. The show has dropped plenty of clues that whatever is feeding on this town thrives on the destruction of hope, so by tearing out the tree, Jade may be executing the exact move the town wants from him, the same way it has played out in every previous cycle.

Jade May Be Repeating the Same Deadly Cycle as His Predecessor

Season 4 confirmed the theory that Jade is the successor to a man who saw the same symbol decades earlier and kept a journal about it. During his mushroom-induced trip, Jade's younger self revealed a disturbing truth: his past lives were not ended by the monsters in the tunnels, they were murdered by the townspeople themselves, and it always happens the same way. Once a vital player learns the truth about who they are and what it takes to break the cycle, the community starts to fracture, blames the leader, turns on him, and eventually panic drives them to kill him.

Jade believes he is the one finally breaking that cycle, but the show keeps hinting he may be repeating his predecessor's footsteps exactly. If he convinces the survivors to dig up the dead, assuming Boyd agrees, he is setting the stage for another historical reset, pushing the town toward the kind of paranoia that could end with residents killing one another, something teased in Boyd's vision at the end of episode 8, where the deaths come from nothing but gunshot wounds, Jade included.

The Man in Yellow May Be Letting Tabitha and Jade Do His Work

The man in yellow, now fully back in his original form, suggested in his recent confrontation with Tabitha near the RV that he wants her to live, acknowledging he will end her eventually but not yet, because her future actions matter to his plan. That raises the question of why Fromville's ultimate predator would let Tabitha and Jade get this far. Either he is genuinely weakened right now, or he is deliberately letting them do the physical labor that ultimately works in his favor.

The emotional setup for the rest of the season backs that reading up. Fatima is potentially undergoing a horrific transition into the kimono lady given her medical condition. Henry is trapped in a false mental reality, unable to tell what is real, with his doctor pushing him to eliminate his anchor. Patty is unraveling after that same rampage, Donna has not recovered from her heart attack, and Boyd is buckling under the pressure. A community this fractured and desperate for a savior rarely ends well, and the trailer for the final two episodes has already teased Victor in emotional turmoil and the bottle tree plan triggering a violent pushback from the town.

Even in the best case, if Jade's team somehow pulls off the extraction, I do not think the aftermath is going to be pretty. It is likely to flood the town with old, unbridled rage, the kind of suffering the man in yellow warned about, and honestly I do not know exactly what that suffering looks like yet. What I do believe is that Jade is marching into those caves with arrogance and no backup plan, oblivious to the fact that his brilliant idea may be the exact trigger for his own downfall, cycle after cycle after cycle.

Do you think Boyd will actually go along with Jade's plan, or does he find a way to stop it before the bottle tree comes down?
