Why Harry Might Be Staying on Kevin's Side in MobLand Season 2
From a shared past in Newgate to a 'now or never' ultimatum about the Cotswolds, here's what I think keeps Harry loyal to the man he calls the weak link.
Harry has been saying Kevin is the weak link because of how he reacts and handles situations under stress. So why is he still on Kevin's side? Even the meeting Frankie had with Harry and Kevin proved that Kevin can't handle situations emotionally, and a person like this isn't capable of being a leader. Yet Harry still wants to be with him.
Is it because Kevin is friendlier than Conrad, or because Harry trusts Kevin more? Is he worried about what will happen once he leaves Kevin? I believe Harry could even take a bullet for Kevin when need be. That's my own opinion, not something the show has promised to reveal. A person who will go to extremes to save someone's life shares a special bond with that person. So what bond do Harry and Kevin share?
Episode 4 confirms Harry and Kevin met in Newgate, but not that Kevin saved him
There's a fan theory that Kevin saved Harry from something when they were in prison together, and that's why Harry has stayed loyal to the family. My first reaction was, wait a minute, did that happen? Here's what episode 4 actually settles: Conrad tells Gina that Harry and Kevin met in Newgate. What it never settles is whether Kevin saved him in there. Maybe that will be revealed in the next episodes.
If it's true, then I start to believe that's the real reason Harry remains on Kevin's side regardless. But it raises more questions. What led to them being in prison together, and for how long? If Kevin saved Harry in there, where was Conrad? Was he trying to get the two of them out, or did he not care about them at all? And is that why Kevin hasn't liked Conrad?
The very first time I felt that Kevin doesn't really like his father was when Conrad went to prison. Does that explain the anger Kevin had while talking to Conrad in prison? Season 2 hasn't shown us that part yet.
Kevin may be the only Harrigan who treats Harry as important
There's a different side to this story. Maybe Harry sees Kevin as the one person in the Harrigan family worth risking his life for, because only Kevin sees Harry as important as he really is in the family. The rest of the Harrigans treat Harry as if he doesn't matter at all. Kevin respects him and gives him his loyalty because he knows who Harry really is.
Harry is a selfless, smart, articulate, responsible and very mature man who doesn't mind handling the riskiest jobs a normal human being can't do. I have a friend who used to say, "Harry is not a human based on his emotionless reactions." If I were in Harry's shoes by now, I would have been named the reactor in the show.
When Conrad questioned Harry's loyalty, I would have shot Conrad. Why? Because I'd have shown him my respect and loyalty for years, and my reward at the end is to have that loyalty questioned. Then why did I even agree to work for you in the first place? So Harry might be taking Kevin's side because of how Kevin sees him compared with how Conrad sees him.
By the look of things, Harry's 'now or never' call puts him in charge
Could Harry seeing Kevin as a weak link have something to do with taking his side? Remember the phone call Harry had with Kevin in episode 4. He tells him to come to the Cotswolds the next morning and even threatens that if Kevin doesn't come, Harry will withdraw himself. In Harry's words: "It's now or never."
I wondered who the actual leader is here. By the look of things, Harry is the one in charge. I'm not sure Harry could even speak to Conrad in that tone while they were working together. So why speak to Kevin like this? Is it because Harry has more control over Kevin and knows he's weak? Or does he care enough about Kevin to be desperate for him to show up? I can say for a fact that those words humiliated Kevin.
But I think their relationship has reached a point where both trust each other so much that neither can afford to break the other's trust. Maybe that's why Harry lost patience for the first time, because I have never seen Harry lose patience and become desperate for anyone like this. Or maybe he has faced so many betrayals in life that he doesn't want Kevin to betray him too.
For Kevin, what if his respect, loyalty and trust for Harry come from believing Harry is the only one who could end the fight with Frankie, since Kevin believes he can't win the war himself? If that's his real reason, it's weak enough for Harry to consider him a weak man. But Harry seeing Kevin as the weak link doesn't mean he thinks less of him. Because Harry knows his weakness, he has to work even harder to protect Kevin and keep his place in the family standing.
Conrad has had more of Harry's loyalty because he is head of the family
I also saw another theory saying the issue is that, if Kevin did save Harry, Harry is showing more loyalty to Conrad than to Kevin. I don't disagree, but it made me ask why Harry showed Conrad more loyalty and respect all this while. That's because Conrad is the head of the family. Not treating him as the boss, not surrendering his ego and serving him, would not be good for Harry.
Even if Kevin did save him in prison, that's not enough of a foundation for Harry to go against Conrad and give Kevin his maximum attention. Harry fears Conrad more than Kevin. That doesn't mean he would ever disrespect Kevin or be disloyal. Their relationship is so mutual that ego is like a nonexistent word when they're together. They think freely without looking over their shoulders, nobody feels tense in meetings, and they speak naturally with no faking.
Now we can see Harry shifting the loyalty he had for Conrad to Kevin, knowing exactly what Conrad wants. Conrad wants Harry to finish his jobs for him, but Kevin needs him too. That's an unbearable moment for Harry, because following Kevin would be an ungrateful act and a betrayal of Conrad.
Harry and Kevin's friendship goes back further than Conrad
The reason he's now choosing Kevin goes back further than Conrad himself. From the Paramount guide and from what Conrad tells Gina in episode 4, we see how Harry entered the family. Harry served in the military for some years, but before that he and Kevin were already friends. The two crossed paths in prison when they were young, and that's where their story starts.
When they got out, Kevin joined the family business while Harry joined the paras and later worked for a private security firm. One day Conrad called that firm for its services. Harry showed up at the door and Kevin recognized him. So Kevin knew Harry before Harry met Conrad, which explains their natural bond and smooth way of doing business. Those years apart could have given Harry experiences Kevin knows nothing about, but they don't give him a reason to turn on Kevin now that they've reconnected.
Conrad's 'already broken' remark to Gina felt possessive to me
When Conrad explained to Gina how he met Harry, honestly, I felt the conversation was weird and possessive. He tells her, "This is how I met your father. I met him already broken." Conrad calls it a compliment: men like Harry, already broken, are in the perfect shape. But I heard something else. This broken man has served you diligently and given you his loyalty and respect. What more do you want from him?
To me, it seemed like he wanted Gina to start losing respect for her father so she could take Conrad as her father. He wanted to own Gina so badly he was willing to humiliate Harry in front of his own daughter. That's why I would back Harry if he wants to quit things with Conrad.
Conrad meeting Harry broken doesn't make him broken now. He has become smarter than Conrad. I can't say that about Maeve, but about Conrad, I believe it. Conrad thinks Harry will keep serving him because he met him broken and Harry has nobody to make him feel better. What has Conrad done for Harry beyond the paycheck? There are some things money can't buy.
Shared pain binds them, though Kevin hasn't always stepped up
Part of their connection comes from Kevin once getting emotional with Harry about the abuse he has endured from the family, and Harry sharing similar abuse he has experienced. Those talks alone aren't enough to make one take a stray bullet for the other. The conversation where Harry tells Kevin he has seen a particular person again makes me understand they spent most of their past lives together. That's why they share a bond even Conrad can't destroy.
It also makes me question why Kevin didn't help Harry escape the bad treatment he received from the family. Kevin was emotionally abused too, but being hurt doesn't stop you helping a longtime friend. When Eddie spoke to Harry in a very humiliating way during a meeting, Kevin just watched with zero action. Maybe he didn't have to be the hero then. His hero side will show up in due time.
Present day Kevin is showing a strength he can't consistently maintain. Harry knows his friend isn't built like that. When Kevin acts tough, others might believe it, but Harry sees a friend faking a personality just to be head of the family. I wouldn't be wrong to say Harry is the only one in the family who truly knows Kevin. He knows his weak sides but has never revealed them. Have a friend like Harry, because he will have your back like a spinal cord.
Harry might be using Kevin as a shield, which is my speculation
Maybe Harry is choosing Kevin because Kevin is useful to him. I've already gone through why Harry is quietly planning his way out, so I'll keep it short. If Kevin is the weak spot, Harry can steer him and use him as a shield in case Conrad comes for him. That's my speculation. If so, it's exploitation, not true friendship, and Harry would have to accept that Kevin will make even worse mistakes than Conrad ever did and own the consequences.
Harry's ability to cut people loose is one skill I can boldly say he has. Finch stopped being useful and ended up dead, while someone who betrayed the family walked away with a new job feeding Harry information. When Harry makes a decision about you, nothing you do will change his mind. Mess with him and you'll find yourself in the mess you created, which I can see is about to happen to Frankie. Whether Harry would cut Kevin loose if Kevin betrays him is another question.
None of this makes Harry innocent. It explains the awful things he's willing to do for his friend, and why he still gives Conrad some loyalty: protecting the boss's son is like protecting the boss. Conrad and Kevin are at each other's throats, but I'm not sure Conrad would wish harm on his son. Then again, Conrad might go after Harry for choosing Kevin, since he's capable of anything after his medical diagnosis.
Kevin's weakness leaves him open to Frankie
Kevin's weakness could be exposed by others and exploited later. Even Frankie has seen it. In one standoff with Frankie, Kevin pulls a gun while Bella is still being held at gunpoint. That means Frankie could control Kevin without Harry even knowing. Kevin also likes isolating himself when he's emotional or weakened, which makes him drink more. One fan theory even describes Kevin as a finished man.
Harry is the one man who can help Kevin back on his feet and become emotionally strong, maybe by telling him to stop drinking. Kevin might see that as Harry judging him rather than backing him, so it might not be a positive interaction. But I believe that when Kevin spends more time alone, he'll realize Harry just wants him to be a better man, because Harry can't keep treating Kevin as a boss when Kevin doesn't see himself as one.
Maeve's trip with Gina splits Harry's focus
Now Maeve has included Gina in a business trip Harry knows nothing about. I've covered Maeve's angle on the trip before; this piece stays on Harry. He's now dealing with Frankie's threats and his daughter's situation at once. It's a worst case scenario, and it will show how strong and decisive Harry is in situations meant to break him. It doesn't mean he'll abandon Kevin; he'll have to handle both problems together.
Having half his mind on each could cause serious effects. Right as he tackles one problem, Kevin might be facing another, and he would never forgive himself if something bad happened to Kevin. What if Kevin dies? I'm not sure Harry would accept that his only friend is gone. He would do everything to fight the people responsible, even if it meant dying. None of this is confirmed, but it is possible.
I think Harry serving Kevin over Conrad is temporary
This theory also makes me notice that Kevin might want Harry to help him leave London and escape these threats. I can see that, since Kevin has become weak and can't lead the family. Harry could prepare a rescue plan for Kevin while going back to Conrad and telling him he can't serve Kevin anymore, leaving Conrad happy and relieved to have him back.
With his daughter in danger, will Harry focus on her first and return to Conrad once she's safe, or plan Kevin's escape before going back? Either way, I know Harry choosing Kevin over Conrad is temporary. Harry can't lose Conrad like that.
Does Harry's loyalty to Kevin survive whatever happens in the Cotswolds?
