Coyote vs. Acme Wins Us Over With Clever Jokes and John Cena, Even if Its Coyote Gets No Sympathy
We gave it four and four and a half, and the story of how the shelved film reached theaters is as interesting as the movie itself.
We finally sat down with Coyote vs. Acme, and we came away having fun with it. Our scores landed at four and a half and four. The jokes were pretty great: "There are some clever jokes."
We love how Coyote vs. Acme mixes animation with live action
The thing that kept coming up was how the film mixes animation with live action. "Once again, I love how they do the animation mixed with live action. It's such a cool balance in this one." When the characters paint their way into the cartoon world, it felt so much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, even without a full viewing of that movie.
"I actually love that John Cena is in this movie. He's perfect." Bugs Bunny was a favorite, to the point that we wondered whether the movie could just be about Bugs. The meta joke around Bugs's informant role was so great. We also didn't know until the credits that the story was by James Gunn, and honestly, that makes so much sense.
We have no sympathy for Wile E. Coyote
Were we supposed to be rooting for the Coyote at all? The first answer was "I don't know." He is doing all of this to catch and eat the Road Runner, and the Road Runner never did anything; he just wants to live. It was kind of nice that the film is not making Coyote a good person, because he's not. At another point, the verdict was: "I have no sympathy. I'm tired of this coyote." We kept suggesting someone just get him chicken nuggets so he would stop chasing the bird.
Even so, the Road Runner's testimony landed. When he answers with a "beep beep," it seemed he does like the Coyote after all, and that was sweet.
A busy film, and a backstory just as interesting as the movie
Our one caveat isn't a knock on the film itself. Movies packed this full of jokes can be exhausting, and by the middle I get tired. Still, I enjoyed it a lot.
The story around the movie is just as interesting. Warner Brothers made it, then new people in charge decided it would not make money and planned to scrap it for tax purposes, so no one was ever supposed to see it. After a huge backlash, it was sold to Ketchup Entertainment, which is how it reached theaters. It probably made a little money or broke even, but Ketchup still won by showing it was willing to put the movie out there.
So where do you land: were you rooting for Coyote, or did he lose you too?
