Will Vegeta become a God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super?

Training with Beerus led some fans to expect Vegeta to take on a Hakaishin role, but his growth into a family man points the other way.

Will Vegeta become a God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super?

Some people seem to think that because Vegeta was training with Beerus, the God of Destruction, in the Dragon Ball Super manga arc running at the time, he will one day become a God of Destruction, a Hakaishin, for Universe 7 or another universe. I don't see that happening. The Vegeta of Dragon Ball Super is not the Vegeta who first appeared in Dragon Ball Z, and the role doesn't fit who he has become.

Vegeta can learn plenty from Beerus and from Whis. That still doesn't mean he'll take the title.

Why Vegeta training with Beerus sparked God of Destruction talk

In that arc of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta was training with Beerus, the Hakaishin of Universe 7. Beerus wanted to show him God of Destruction techniques such as the Hakai. This seems to follow a conversation the two had in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 69.

In that conversation, the idea is that being a Saiyan, or at least a Saiyan elite and a warrior of the warrior race, makes you more prone to destroying things. Vegeta in his youth certainly fit that description. As Beerus taunts him, he reminds Vegeta of the sins his race committed. Vegeta himself admitted that even his own father made a huge mistake, but the exchange still brought back memories of his youth.

Vegeta fans who praise his development misread who he is now

What never ceases to amaze me about the Dragon Ball fandom is a certain group of people, not everybody but a chunk of them, especially Vegeta fans. They always talk about how much development Vegeta had and how he was the most developed character in Dragon Ball Z. He may well have been. That's not entirely wrong. He was very well developed in Dragon Ball Z and into Dragon Ball Super as well.

It's amazing that so many people, even the ones who say this, don't understand his character. The same people who talk about how much they love Vegeta don't understand what he has become. The Vegeta of Dragon Ball Super is not the same Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z, especially the early part of that series.

We already know his history. He grew up an elite, a prince under his father, through several battles. He was told many times that he would inherit the throne of Planet Vegeta and be one of the strongest fighters in the universe. Then he met Goku, the pauper, the low class one, who taught him that hard work and discipline can get you just as far as your bloodline. That's the beauty of the Goku and Vegeta relationship.

Whis twice raised Vegeta inheriting the God of Destruction position

From the Buu saga on, Vegeta changed. You could even trace it back to a moment in the Cell saga. Then, earlier in Dragon Ball Super, Whis brought up on two separate occasions that Vegeta should be the one to inherit the position of God of Destruction.

This came when Vegeta asked Whis for training. It was after Battle of Gods but before Resurrection F, during the four in between episodes. Vegeta asked Whis to train him, and Whis said sure, if he takes the position of God of Destruction.

So does this mean Beerus is getting old? Will he be retiring soon? We don't have an answer, because we don't know anything about Beerus's history when it comes to holding the position. With that said, Vegeta did not reply to Whis in an interested manner. I don't think Vegeta is in any way interested in being a God of Destruction.

Family man Vegeta: Bulma, Trunks, Bra and Goku

If you've been paying attention to Dragon Ball Super, you know Vegeta has changed. He's now a family man. He cares about Bulma, he cares about Trunks, and he cares about his daughter Bra, whose name was changed in the dub because of censorship.

It started with the sacrifice Vegeta made in Dragon Ball Z against the then invincible Majin Buu, when he was Majin Vegeta. The three people who helped change him the most are his wife, his son Trunks and, of course, Kakarot. Those are the characters who have surrounded Vegeta's life since he killed Nappa and went off on his own.

After the Buu saga, and in the ten year time skip where Super takes place, Vegeta has brought these characters up many times. He took Trunks on a vacation. He defended Kakarot's life against Frieza, explaining that he needs Kakarot to make himself stronger and that Goku helps push him in better directions. He has told other characters on multiple occasions that he's a different guy now.

Even in the battle with Jiren, he said he wanted to fight for his wife. He was close to a full breakdown as he was thrown out of the Tournament of Power, and again he thought about his wife. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, his motivation was to protect the Earth from Frieza. Let's keep it real: he's become a totally different guy. He's almost like a freedom fighter now, though not fully. Even in the Moro arc, he was empathizing with the Namekians and thinking back to the fact that he killed several of them in the Frieza saga.

Why Vegeta won't become a God of Destruction

This is a different Vegeta, and he does not care about being the God of Destruction. It's weird to me that Vegeta fans who claim to understand the character can't figure out that this is not going to happen.

Could he change his mind? I guess he could, but what would be the point? He would have to stay on that weird planet with Whis. He couldn't see his family. He probably couldn't train, though maybe he could. We don't really know what Beerus does. And when you think about it, why would Vegeta even want the job? It's a mundane, boring life. You're on that planet destroying things because it's your job, whereas I feel Vegeta would rather destroy things because he wants to, even though he's a different Vegeta from the one we met in the early part of Dragon Ball Z.

So no, I don't see Vegeta becoming a God of Destruction. Maybe he'll change his mind, and maybe Beerus will retire, but that seems very unlikely. Beerus and Whis both have things to teach him and Goku. He might even learn to do what Toppo was doing in terms of power. That doesn't mean he'll take the gig, because being a God of Destruction is a totally different game.

If you really think he would, based on the character we've seen in Super and in Dragon Ball Z, I'd advise you to rewatch Dragon Ball Z in Japanese, rewatch Dragon Ball Super and read the manga, so you understand his character. When he was younger, I'm sure the role would have fit him. It doesn't fit him anymore, because this is a much different Vegeta.
